Sure the temperature is still warm but it's much drier than summer. I spent 6 weeks there in June/July 2014 and never saw a single mosquito. I'm not saying they don't exist but I never saw any.

From what I can tell, in a bad case it hits you like the flu and you treat it in typical ways. It's not deadly.

We're about 2.5 weeks from our trip to Mexico and in about 10 days or so we'll know if we need to pull an audible on the trip. Assuming we're still on as planned, we'll play it pretty safe for a couple weeks during and after the trip just in case.

Sexually transmitted case of Zika virus reported in Dallas County

DALLAS - Dallas County health officials have confirmed a case of Zika virus acquired through sexual transmission.

The patient reportedly had sexual contact with another infected individual who recently returned from a country where the Zika virus is present, according to a release from Dallas County Health and Human Services.

"Now that we know Zika virus can be transmitted through sex, this increases our awareness campaign in educating the public about protecting themselves and others," said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director. "Next to abstinence, condoms are the best prevention method against any sexually-transmitted infections."

Typically the Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos, but doctors are now learning that it can also be spread from person to person through sexual activity.

Symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. Usually these symptoms are mild and only last several days.

Health officials have noted a suspicious link between Zika’s arrival in Brazil last year and a surge in the number of babies born with abnormally small heads. The World Health Organization declared an international emergency on Monday.

"After a review of the evidence, the committee advised that the clusters of microcephaly and other neurological complications constitute an extraordinary event and public health threat to other parts of the world," WHO Director General Margaret Chan said.

WHO estimates there could be up to 4 million cases of Zika in the Americas in the next year.

There are currently no reports of the virus being locally transmitted by mosquitoes in Dallas County. However, health officials said it could happen eventually.

Have a family vacation to Punta Cana scheduled for end of Feb. Read the CDC guidelines. If you aren't pregnant or trying to get pregnant (non-issue here) it basically says to try and prevent mosquito bites like you normally would. We aren't overly worried.

I have to read the guidelines specifically still but the "trying to get pregnant" part is scary. Read something yesterday about the potential for a woman being a carrier, and passing it to her yet to be conceived baby later on. What's the max timeline for that potentially occurring? 1 month, 3 months, 6 months?

I'm snipped, so for us it isn't a concern (or I suppose, more accurately, for me...if she gets pregnant we have bigger fish to fry). No clue on if the virus can stay dormant or how long till the body can typically eradicate it.

Why'd you do that? We may your Polish Hammer sperm for the coming zika apocalypse!

In Colombia there has been over 3,000 pregnant women diagnosed with Zika and no shrunken baby heads. Further more, the shrunken baby head outbreak started BEFORE the Zika outbreak in Brazil and was quite possible underreported for 5 years by Brazil.

Interesting is right. Found a couple articles discussing this idea but haven't seen that Colombia statistic you mentioned in them. Have a link for that?

My wife and I are in the early stages of trying for our first. Have a trip to Mexico booked for the last week in February. If she happens to get pregnant in the next month, we're canceling the trip or trying to go somewhere else

Those 10 days cleared, we went on our trip with no issues and had an awesome time, pumped the brakes for a bit after just to be safe, and a couple months later she got pregnant. We were trying to book a trip before she won't be able to travel but there just aren't many warm places you can go in the fall that are Zika-free. It was basically going all the way to Hawaii or Bermuda which is what we booked. Safe for now, hope it stays that way.

They gotta get this funding stuff ironed out.
