***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (9 Viewers)

Detroit Tigers (5744) at Los Angeles Angels (6241)

Time/Place: 3:35 p.m., Anaheim Stadium

Pitching Matchup: RHP Rick Porcello (12- 5, 3.42 ERA) vs. LHP Hector Santiago (2- 7, 4.02 ERA)

Pitcher GS IP K/9 BB/9 HR/9 WHIP FIP SIERA fWAR

Porcello 19 126.1 5.13 1.99 0.85 1.16 3.93 4.13 1.8

Santiago

13 71.2 8.59 1.52 1.00 1.28 4.05 4.10 0.7

Hector Santiago should be familiar to Tiger fans and players from his seasons with the Chicago White Sox. The 26 year old left-hander spent three seasons with Chicago, and was part of the three player trade that sent Mark Trumbo to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Adam Eaton to Chicago. Santiago started the season at the back end of the Angels' rotation, starting out 0- 6 with a 5.19 ERA. He was victimized by a lack of run support, six unearned runs, and a shaky bullpen, but also a high BB rate, which is murder on a fly ball pitcher. He was optioned to triple-A Salt Lake, and Matt Shoemaker was given his job in the rotation.

Santiago was recalled in June, when Tyler Skaggs was placed on the disabled list, then moved to the bullpen when Skaggs was recalled in July, and brought back into the rotation when CJ Wilson was placed on the disabled list. He could be on borrowed time, so he will have to make the most of his opportunities. Since being recalled, Santiago has posted a 3.10 ERA over six starts and two relief appearances.

Santiago's splits are nothing out of the ordinary for a left-hander, although seven of the eight home runs he has given up have been hit by right-handed batters. He is capable of pitching effectively against both right and left-handed hitting. His repertoire, as shown by pitch f/x indicates a full repertoire of six pitches. In 2014, he has relied primarily on his four seam fastball (92mph), a circle change up (84mph). curve ball (77mph), and cutter (86mph). He also throws an occasional sinker (91mph) and screwball (77mph), according to Brooks baseball.

Rick Porcello has had the breakout season that has been anticipated since his rookie season in 2009. After seeing a sharp increase in his K rate in 2013, Porcello still struggled against left-handed hitters, allowing a .300 plus batting average. That has not been a problem this season, and the results have shown up in both his ERA and his won- loss totals. His ERA and WHIP are easily the best of his career, and he already has accumulated a higher rWAR than in any full season thus far.

Porcello's overall numbers put him third or fourth in the Tigers' rotation, but he could be a No 2 in most rotations around the league. He is tied with Max Scherzer and the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka for the league lead in victories with 12, but ranks 26th in FIP and 23rd in fWAR- in a virtual tie with Justin Verlander. He has one of the lowest K/9 rates among qualified starters in the American League, and one of the best BB/9 rates. He depends on getting ground ball outs, and keeping his sinker from drifting out over the plate.

Hitter to fear: Albert Pujols is hitting .400 .400 .600 1.000, (4 for 10) with a pair of doubles against Porcello.

Hitter to fail: Erick Aybar is just 4 for 21, with a line of .190 .292 .238 .530 against Porcello.

Outlook: The Angels, despite a better record than Detroit, are sitting in a wild card playoff spot at the moment. That means that they would host the Seattle Mariners, and a likely date with "King" Felix Hernandez, or the Kansas City Royals and James Shields, in a one game do-or-die playoff. Should circumstances pit the two Angels and Tigers against each other in the post season, the winner of the season series could determine home field advantage. The Tigers have not taken the season series against the Angels since 2010. Sunday's winner will take the season series, 4 games to 3.

Porcello is 4- 4 with a 7.34 ERA in ten career starts against the Angels. Santiago is 0- 3 with a 2.08 ERA for his career vs Detroit, with 25 walks and 34 strikeouts in 34 innings. Josh Hamilton is a sizzling 6 for 13 against Porcello, with two home runs, eight RBI, and line of .462 .533 .923 1.456. However, he was removed from Friday's game after looking shaky on a ball hit into the gap. Mike Trout hit a grand slam in the nine-run first inning last year in Anaheim that has to go down as the worst inning of Porcello's career. Trout is hitting .333 with a 1.012 OPS against Porcello.

Porcello pitched seven innings of one-run ball against the Angels in April, allowing five hits, no walks, and four strikeouts in a 2- 1 Tigers victory in Detroit. The Halos' lone run came in the first inning on a single, sacrifice bunt, and single. Santiago was the hard luck loser, allowing no earned runs, two hits, and seven walks in 5-2/3 innings of work. The Tigers scored a pair of unearned runs resulting from throwing errors by Angels' catcher, Hank Conger.

Prediction: Porcello continues his dominance over the Angels' lineup, while the Tigers get to Santiago and Jason Grilli. A seemingly innocuous single digit flashed from the crowd near the on deck circle in the first inning leaves Mike Trout looking like a fish out of water, to seal the Tigers victory.

The team just ain't quite jelling yet. Seems like almost all the pieces are in place, just not all performing at the same time. At least the starting rotation is showing signs of returning to form. I am not sure KC is going to allow the Tigers just to coast through the season. The Tigers need to get to about 25 games over .500 and put KC to bed.

Lots of flaws - like most teams - and third best record in MLB. Detroit is a tough matchup for anyone in the playoffs.

The Angels are a really good team. They're about the only team in the AL I don't want to see in the playoffs.

I don't think any team in the AL Central is especially worrisome.

So Porcello, Smyly and JV give up a combined five earned runs in three games and they lose all three. You hit their best pitcher, and let a guy like Hector Santiago shut you down. Skaggs not a whole lot better, oof.

That stadium is a house of horrors, Angels are good but their pitching isn't anywhere that good.

But I noted their confidence in their bullpen ...pulling a couple starters at low pitch counts and letting their crop of relievers take it from there.

Off day stat: Andrew Romine hits 1 home run every 151.0 at bats.
How often does a guy have a SPct that is lower than his OBP?
I do think we have identified the weakest link, Don Kelly has a 110 point lead on him in OPS.
I admire Andrew's consistency. Though the sample sizes are very small, in five MLB seasons he has never had a SPct that was higher than his OBP.

Donnie Baseball, on the other hand, does come up with a key hit occasionally. Every other month, sure, but the point stands.

What is the status of Hanrahans contract? If he misses all year do the Tigers have the option to retain him for next season without other teams getting a shot?

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Chicago White Sox

Site: Comerica Park in Detroit

Records: Tigers, 57-45 (1st in AL Central); White Sox, 51-55 (4th in AL Central)

Schedule

Monday: OFF

Tuesday: RHP Anibal Sanchez (7-4, 3.54 ERA) vs. LHP Jose Quintana (5-7, 3.15 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD

Wednesday: RHP Max Scherzer (2-3, 3.37 ERA) vs. RHP Hector Noesi (5-7, 4.99 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD

Thursday: LHP Drew Smyly (6-9, 3.77 ERA) vs. LHP John Danks (9-6, 4.40 ERA), 1:08 p.m., FSD

Scouting the White Sox: The Tigers haven't fared well against All-Star lefty Chris Sale, who struck out 10 in seven innings against the Tigers earlier this season. Fortunately for the Tigers, they'll miss Sale during this week's three-game series. Instead, the Tigers will get Jose Quintana, who has been equally as effective as Sale as of late, posting a 1.70 ERA and striking out 49 in his last seven starts. The White Sox, who trail the Tigers by eight games in the division, have won six of 10 and narrowly pulled off a four-game sweep in Minnesota. All-Star first baseman Jose Abreu continues to impress in his rookie season. He hit his major league-leading 30th homer Friday and will enter Tuesday riding a 17-game hitting streak. He plated another RBI, his 79th this year, on Sunday and trails only Miguel Cabrera for the major league lead (81).

You couldn't make this #### up. Give it a treatment & Hollywood would reject it. Really...like every year this team wins a division title with a different closer and they all end up sucking? Getouttahere..

6 runs scored during the 4 game skid. 4-8 since the ASG. Good thing the rest of the division sucks.

Today and tomorrow for non-waiver deals. Doesn't sound like anything big is cooking, though DD has been known to surprise.

Evan Reed charged this morning with two counts of sexual assault.

National guy on the radio actually mentioned Price, would improve the starting rotation + the bullpen by bumping Smyly.

Longshot but who knows.

GAME NOTES

-- Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos is back in the lineup tonight -- a day after he was a late scratch after suffering a finger injury during batting practice. Castellanos had to have his finger drained after he took a ball off the hand Tuesday.

-- Andrew Romine will start at shortstop tonight in place of rookie Eugenio Suarez, who exited Tuesday's game with lower back tightness. Suarez is listed day to day.

-- Alex Avila is back in the starting lineup after being held out the past two games. Backup catcher Bryan Holaday will head back to the bench with right-hander Hector Noesi set to start for Chicago.

-- A day after hitting cleanup, Miguel Cabrera is back at the No. 3 spot, and Victor Martinez is back to hitting cleanup. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus plugged Cabrera in the No. 4 spot on Tuesday in an effort to extend the starting lineup.

-- Tonight's forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms and temperatures steady or falling to near 71 degrees. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop by early evening. Don't be surprised if there's a rain delay tonight.

-- Tonight's starter Max Scherzer is 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings in his last six starts. He struck out 11 and gave up three runs on six hits over seven innings in his start Thursday.

Agreed on both counts. His FA price is ..unfortunate. I'd hate to lose him. But we've cast our lot with JV.

Nice to see Nick right back at it with some nice pop. He's having a good year.

MLB network just went to commerical with a report from Ken Rosenthal's twitter account saying they were about to trade for David Price & Ben Zorbrist.

After the break, they realized it was a fake twitter account. Idiots.

How do people still fall for this?

Miller has ridiculous trends the past 5 years.

FIP 6.23, 5.12, 3.17, 3.05, 1.69

ERA+ 49, 78, 127, 156, 168

K/BB 1.08, 1.22, 2.55, 2.82, 5.31

I approve of any trade for price that does not involve castellanos. They can't trade their top prospect (hill), so there's always that.

If the Tigers were to get Price, it would cost Smyly, Crawford and probably Iglesias.
I dont think that is anything close to enough for Price
Smyly is worth a lot in trade. There is a reason the tigers are among the finalists, Smyly would be a top pitching prospect in the minors right now and is under team control through the decade. Mariners are going to have walker as the centerpiece coming back. If cards are giving Tavares then tigers can't match, but mariners don't have hitters to send back either
