Eric Norwood listed on NFL.com as a DE but Rotoworld still has him at LB.
I'm pretty sure he is playing LB.
He is a quasi-LB/DE. Listed at OLB. He'll be used on passing downs. He's more of a 3-4 LB, playing in Carolina's 4-3 system. He looked good on Thursday night. I think he had 3 tackles with a sack or at least a TFL - all in limited time.
Thanks for clarifying, Jeff. I should have been more clear in my post. I was basically referring to his positional listing rather than his role.

Any idea on how the Jags LB corps will play out? Who's playing where in camp?
Last night, with the 1's, the nickel looked like Morrison and Durant in at LB. Not sure how much stock to put in that since Daryl Smith didn't dress.

From the ESPN NFC North blog:

2. Have the Vikings done enough to fortify their secondary? Starting right cornerback Cedric Griffin is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and the Vikings have opened his job up to four players: Lito Sheppard, Asher Allen, Benny Sapp and rookie Chris Cook. Sheppard makes the most sense as a short-term starter, but Cook was impressive on every level in training camp.

Cook displayed sophisticated cover skills, enough speed to stay with most receivers and, at 6-foot-2, an imposing physical presence. Sheppard has held on to his first-team job, but it could be a matter of time before Cook displaces him.

Meanwhile, the Vikings have created a legitimate competition at strong safety between incumbent Tyrell Johnson and second-year player Jamarca Sanford. If all things are equal, I'm guessing the Vikings will favor Johnson, a high second-round draft pick in 2008. But Sanford is a live wire, a strong hitter and won't go quietly.

Coaches believe Johnson has responded well to the challenge, but they want to see it translate into more plays -- big tackles, interceptions, forced fumbles -- during preseason games.

Looking back at Atlanta's preseason debutfrom ESPN.com - NFL Nation Blog by Pat YasinskasLet’s take a quick look back at Atlanta’s 20-10 victory against Kansas City on Friday night. As always, it is merely preseason football, so the score and a lot of other things don't really matter. But let’s sort through what does matter. * The biggest question mark about the Falcons is the defense. Well, the early impressions were positive. The first-team defense held the Kansas City offense to just 15 yards on eight plays in the first quarter. Yes, it’s the Chiefs, but this was still a nice start for the defense. * The pass rush is the portion of that defense that everyone’s most concerned about. The early results on that were good, too. Kroy Biermann had a sack/fumble against Matt Cassel and Kansas City’s first-team offense. The Falcons have been talking a lot about how they’re going to rotate defensive linemen a lot this season. Biermann might not be a starter, but I think he and John Abraham will be the defensive ends in most passing situations. * Sticking with the defense, Cassel was accurate in the first quarter, completing six of eight passes. But that went for a total of 25 yards. In other words, Atlanta’s secondary wasn’t giving up any deep plays. * Speaking of the secondary, there’s been a quiet buzz around Atlanta’s camp about safety Shann Schillinger. That got louder against the Chiefs as Schillinger intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards to set up Atlanta’s first touchdown. As a sixth-round pick, Schillinger was a guy the Falcons thought they might stash on the practice squad when they first drafted him. Now, they’re thinking he’s got a real shot at making the roster as a backup safety with a chance to be a real force on special teams.* Coach Mike Smith sounded happy with the debut of rookie linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. He started on the weak side as Mike Peterson sat out. Weatherspoon has been working on the strong side also. Everyone keeps asking if he’ll take Peterson’s place or be on the strong side in place of Stephen Nicholas. I don’t think the Falcons have really decided yet. But I think you still will see a lot of all three of those guys, because it sounds like the Falcons plan to rotate linebackers just like they’re going to do with defensive linemen.
Biermann looked good, and a lot bigger than what he was listed at.

Vanden Bosch also looks great and has gotten to Leftwich twice, no sacks but forced two passes to be thrown early.

Cliff Avril blew through the line and sacked Leftwich. He is noticeably bigger too.

A good article on what the Pack is gonna do with Cullen Jenkins.
They moved Chillar to outside LB too and he is one of the best LB in coverage. 2 years ago they got burned(lost 2 games I remember) by TE touchdowns.

Jenkins there would present a lot of the same problems they had with Kampman outside.

Last year they played a lot of 2 man line with 5 LB or 5 DB's. I could see him as an extra LB; Capers likes flexibility and he could be a good addition.

Good for Avril.CC Browns stats look good too. Was he the starter? Is Delmas playing?

Brandon Spikes getting a lot of buzz right now in NE. Had an impressive first game, several different beat writers have commented on his instincts and how he looks like a veteran out there. He did come out in some obvious passing downs, but sounds like he has an early lead on starting next to Mayo.

Washington was all over the place tonight (13 total tackles per Rotoworld) as a backup LB still though for AZ.....Got some praise from Wiz postgame & the impression was he may move up sooner rather than later on Cards.Com.

I just watched the replay on the NFL channel and he looked great! Yes, it was against the 2's and 3's (and 4's), but he was all over the field, showed good game speed and quickness, solid tackling and seemed to do a good job shedding blockers considering he's a little on the light side as LB's go.He got a sack and batted down a pass or two as well. He looked like one of those guys that just gets it and is a natural.I know it's preseason, but I am stoked right now to have this kid on my rosters. I was worried about his size, but it didn't seem to be a problem tonight.

Looks like Dizon in Detroit suffered a season ending knee injury last night....They are awfully thin @ LB right now, especially with Levy having been sitting out too right now.

Things noted from the early preseason games and post-game comments:

**Brandon Spikes played on nickel downs, including a few as a rush OLB on the line. Patrick Chung started and was in the box significantly more than Brandon Meriweather.

**Jonathan Casillas has been promoted to WLB in New Orleans (Shanle bumped to SLB). Casillas got nickel snaps alongside Jonathan Vilma. While he didn't look fabulous, Casillas was around the ball and might get interesting quickly.

**Dannell Ellerbee may be back in the mix at RILB in Baltimore. Tavares Gooden took the first team nickel snaps.

**Everette Brown was a situational rusher, with Charles Johnson starting and playing 3-tech on nickel downs as expected. James Anderson played in the nickel.

**Awesome post here from massraider on the Oakland alignments and playing time.

**Rocky McIntosh at WILB and in the nickel. Andre Carter started at LOLB.

**They may list Eric Berry as a FS on their depth chart, but he was in the box more than Jon McGraw. He also took a snap or two deep and in man coverage over the slot. Same LB alignments as 2009.

**Sabby Piscitelli got first crack with the first team at SS, but the competition remains wide open.

**Karlos Dansby is absolutely the WILB in Miami. Channing Crowder played in the nickel with him.

**Jordan Dizon's injury may give Zach Follett an every-down job. Follett wasn't particularly impressive. CC Brown was the starting SS. Cliff Avril started at end.

**Seattle immediately used their elephant formation and used it often. Hawthorne was playing MLB for Tatupu so the nickel snaps are still up in the air here. Lawyer Milloy was solid enough as the starting SS.

Still plenty up in the air after this weekend. And I'd be very careful not to get too excited about any "breakout" defensive performances. Defenses are generally ahead of offenses at this stage of the preseason, neither side of the ball is running anything more than basic stuff and there are second teamers peppered in liberally for dinged up starters. Still, if you see a totally dominant performance against the second team, it's worth filing away to cross-check later should the breakout player get a shot against better competition.

As a Lions' fan, I hope this doesn't happen. Follett was horrible and if the Lions have to play him 3 downs, they are in trouble. My gut tells me the Lions will be looking for a LB soon, and not just to replace Dizon. Maybe someone like Thomas Howard, just to throw a name out there.Avril is noticeably bigger and I think he is a mortal lock to start at end. Vanden Bosch was very impressive as well.

What's the dynasty view on Rocky? He has been consistant over the last 3 years averaging 64-25 tackles & 5 big plays per year. But now he is in a new role at WILB and he's only 28 and Fletcher can't play forever.Norton has him putting up career numbers, but Rudnicki has him right at that average in the projections.

I think he could have some upside and be had somewhat cheap right now with a fairly solid floor.

Sharpton 7 tackles and 1 interception.
The more I read about and see of Sharpton, the more I think he will find a way on the field. Between injuries and Cushings suspension it seems like he could get a shot...and if he impresses maybe he finds a way to stay out there. Am I crazy?

Dallas is loaded at LB. You'd think Detroit should be beating down their door.*eta* Still looking for any updates to the Jags LB corps. I've been checking out their website and reading Vic Ketchman's (sp) blog...he's pretty much worthless.

Regarding an earlier question about Bobby Carpenter, he has made next to no noise so far, good or bad. The guy who has apparently impressed in camp is OLB Larry Grant, and it was good to see that translate on the field in the first preseason game. If you're looking for the Rams' starting WLB, it's probably Grant right now. Looking forward to what we see out of him this week.

You are not all crazy, no. It is going to take a big camp from here on out though. Adibi was the early favorite, but he's been out all camp. Now its the veterans Bentley and Clark with Sharpton on the outside. The problem for Sharpton is he has been taking backup reps at WLB and MLB and they werent focusing him at the strong side. If he continues to impress though I could see them giving him a shot. Kubiak has no problems starting rookies on defense.

The Lions released DE Jason Hunter, put Dizon on IR, signed LB Lee Campbell, and took Ko Simpson off the PUP list.

Just adding a little to Anthony's post:

From Dizon's Facebook page:

Jordon Dizon: It's official the flying Hawaiian is out of commission! Torn acl, mcl, and pcl. Thanks for everyones support! I'll be back even stronger next year!!!!!

Without Matt Millen they are an up and coming team. 2 years before he was hired they were in the playoffs 6 out of the previous 10 years after he was hired have not returned.

Sure they haven't won a championship since >hmmm let me think< well a long time but they aren't alone.

It takes a while to come back from a Matt Millen. ;)

I'm intrigued - definitely keeping my eye on him.http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2010/...onathan_ca.html

How high could the projections go if he sticks at WLB there? LB2? LB3?
he's very athletic and a capable thumper. however, i wouldn't expect him to supplant shanle on nickel packages. he's just too raw. he's probably just getting some looks, along with dunbar, to see who might get the nod with ingram still out. shanle had a good season last year, i thought.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/au...-getting-speed/

Buried in a story about Merriman returning was this quote from Norv Turner about rookie SS Darrell Stuckey:

Rookie strong safety Darrell Stuckey worked team drills for the first time since straining his groin Aug. 4.

While another setback could be detrimental to his short-term development, the ability and acumen Stuckey showed the first two weeks of camp, along with the limited role he will be asked to perform, have the Chargers confident he will recover from the missed time.

“He's going to play in one personnel package, on first and second down," Norv Turner said. "The learning issue isn't as extensive as if he were being asked to play in all personnel groups and all situations. Based on what I saw of him and how he handles things, I'm not concerned about where he is.”

the Detroit Lions may end up fielding one of the best 4-3 DLs in the NFL this year

Borbs, your boys looked mighty good up front against mah Stilerz....

I have a pending bid on him in my primary league just as a flyer. I had drafted Donald Butler to be my LB5/LB6 with upside - behind Lofton, Timmons, Levy, and Harrison. I also recently added Goff which I am personally very high on as a flyer at league min. The good news is that either, if they don't stick, are easy cuts... but in a 16 team league with 8 IDP starters, a good LB with upside can be tough to find sometimes. (Not nearly as deep as the 16 team, 53 man roster league I am in, but still).

Assuming Barnett is healthy and able to play every down, there's a tussle ongoing between A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop for the job alongside Barnett in the nickel defense. Hawk opened there against Cleveland.

"That competition is kind of wide open right now," said Capers. "Between A.J. and Bishop, it's going to be who shows the best during the preseason."

Hawk was beat for a touchdown pass in the exhibition opener. Bishop has yielded a string of completions in camp.

"Bishop is a work in progress," said Capers. "He's much better right now than he was at this time last year."

Last year, Brandon Chillar replaced Hawk in the nickel near midseason, and the Packers called him their best cover linebacker. Although Capers said Chillar still could play inside to some extent, he hasn't worked there since moving to right outside linebacker in the base and nickel defenses Aug. 2.

Capers was asked if the Packers could afford to keep Chillar outside in nickel given his skill covering from the inside and his ordinary production so far as an outside pass rusher.

Capers replied that the Packers could junk the nickel and go with a dime defense featuring just one inside linebacker and six defensive backs.

"Last year, when we had inside people that were matchup problems, you saw (Charles) Woodson in there a lot," said Capers. "In Pittsburgh, we never played five (defensive backs). We've got to be ready when people try to spread us out."

Yes keep those blockers off of Levy. Don't bother tackling anyone Levy and Delmas will take care of that.

Has anyone heard how Ernie Sims is doing? I have not heard anything other than he'll be a 3 down LB for Philly? Traditionally has the WLB in Philly's system produced well? In Detroit he certainly had his issues, but I think a change of scenery is something that would really benefit a guy like Sims

Camp reports are that he's all over the field. He was jacking up guys too much in practice. But WLB has not been a consistent point guy in Philly since William Thomas about 3 defensive schemes ago.I'd hold him as depth maybe a LB3 but more likely a bye week guy.

Sims has always been a LB who is all over the field. However, he has always had problems shedding blocks and is often so aggressive that he runs himself out of position to make a play. Sims is the player who is a half step slow getting to the play and that is because he is not in the correct place on the field.

Packers safety Bigby might miss 4 to 8 weeks after ankle surgery

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers safety Atari Bigby will miss at least four weeks after having ankle surgery earlier this month, putting his availability for the Sept. 12 season opener at Philadelphia in doubt.

Bigby said it would be "very disappointing" to start the season on the Packers' physically unable to perform list. He is expected to be out four to eight weeks, so even if he makes it back quickly, he still would have little time to prepare for the game against the Eagles.

Bigby had surgery on his troublesome left ankle Aug. 6. If he begins the season on the PUP list, he would miss the first six games of the season.
Another nail in the coffin and another opportunity for Burnett

DeAndre Levy looks very good. Zack Follett is struggling again. I find it hard to believe he keeps the WLB job unless he starts playing a lot better.

Biermann looks good in the game again.
Just earlier this week, Biermann had been regulated to 3rd on the depth chart:Coach Mike Smith on DE Kroy Biermann pressing for a starting spot: "No doubt about it. Kroy is making a statement with his play in these two (preseason) games."
silliness. Biermann was one of the only guys getting pressure on the QB last season for awhile, and now he's 3rd? Ugh.
