Cleveland WRs (1 Viewer)

Holy Schneikes

They can't be serious with this can they?

They've got Hawkins, who had 200 yards last year, is 28 and goes 5'7", 175. Never played a full season and has started two games in his career.

They've got Austin, who had 244 yards last year and has an injury history that reads like war and peace, and seems to have lost about 4 steps. Has started 16 games once in an 8 year career.

Those are the starters.

Then they can bring in Travis Benjamin, who had 5 catches last year and weighs 170 pounds. Then rookie Taylor Gabriel who astonishingly weighs less than Benjamin. Finally Laron Byrd, an UDFA who has been waived 3 times in two years, has one career catch and no experience in the scheme.

That's it.

This is the worst group of receivers I can ever remember seeing. Am I missing something here? In the modern NFL, how do they start the season like this? In the wildly unlikely event that Austin gets hurt (please find the sarcasm here), they are now picking from three guys under 175 pounds every down?

I think Austin will be fantasy worthy if, or until, he gets hurt. I suspect there could be a lot of dump off passes to Tate and the TE, Cameron, will be the focus of passing attack.

I think this happens because the Browns must have thought Gordon would beat the drug charges or else pure, plain incompetence.

Was buying Jordan Cameron in every league precisely because of this, but am thinking the strategy backfired as he's the only set of hands who opposing D's will really focus on.

Leaning the latter.

For the Chiefs week 1: Avery, Hemingway, Wilson, Jenkins, Hammond.
Avery had 600 yards for them last year and is adult sized if not large. Bowe is only suspended one game. Jenkins finally showed a little promise last year.

Overall, a very bad group for week one, and average after that. IMO nothing on Cleveland.

Aside from the rookie, Carolina's aren't much better. but at least they have a QB.

They are bad too, and have been just as maligned if not more so than the Browns group. That said, both Cotchery and Avant are decent journeymen and average sized. If Benjamin turns out to be any good, that group should be OK.

Outside of Austin, the Browns group combined have literally one season of over 300 rec yards (Hawkins in 2012). And nobody over 175 pounds.

I think Cameron is boom or bust. I think he'll have a handful of huge games, but i also think a handful of teams will take him out of the game entirely.

The worst part, it's not as if cleveland has the running game to keep the pressure off. Tate and West wouldn't scare me if I was a DC.

I like what Hawkins brings to the table. With a crowded WR set in Cincy last year, Baby Hawk still managed to crack through and get playing time. Now he has the chance to shine and I think he'll take advantage of it. If I were in PPR, I would pick him up as I see him getting all the under routes.

The running game will be better with a true RB there to lead the charge in Tate. This should help loosen the coverage on the WRs. I like what i have seen from Hawk and Taylor Gabriel. A couple of guys who seem to know how to catch the ball. If Austin can prove he's healthy, he's a good option to have out there with the newbies.

Everyone is sleeping on Hawkins. This is his first shot at being a focal point of an offense that sorely needs a receiver to step up. Dude has elite speed, great hands, and by all accounts is one of the smartest and hardest working players in the NFL. I really see him being a legit WR2 in PPR, especially with ll' Shanny and Hoyer running the show. I know i'll be letting out a lot of baby hawk screeches these upcoming Sundays. Pick him up for free off of your wire and enjoy the ride.

Edit: Looks like Peak beat me to the punch, we'll be screeching.

I agree, he caught 51 passes on a team where Green caught 97 and Greshem caught 64.

I think he gets 4-5 catches a game.

Still don't understand how they cut Charles Johnson. Is he really worse than all these other guys? He's got size and he's fast. This organization is truly incompetent or Charles must have really sucked in training camp. Tons of buzz around him in OTAs and looked good, but didn't do anything special, in preseason. Maybe if someone missed a tackle and he ran for a long TD then the 12 year olds running the Browns would have taken notice of him.

Edit: I agree with the rest though. Hawkins is being undervalued.

Johnson is on their practice squad

Sleeper of the Browns WR corps is undrafted free agent WR Taylor Gabriel.

He lead the team in receptions and receiving yards in the preseason.

He's small but deceptively strong, benches 350 lbs and squats 500 lbs.

He's quick, great hands, fearless over the middle of the field.

Nobody is really talking about Taylor but I think he 'could' wind up the leading receiver of this group by the time this year is finished.

Jordan Cameron might catch 150 balls

The rest of these guys are barely above replacement level pass catchers.

I did draft hawkins in last round of a ppr, but if he stuggles he is cut, not much FF value at all at the WR position

It wouldn't shock me to see Hawkins catch 70+ passes this year. I liked him in Cincy, and he's gonna be the 1WR on this team. He has great speed and finds ways to get open, especially on underneath routes. Can see him catching a lot of drags, outs, screens, etc. a lot in part because there is no one else. Austin is always hurt and looks like he's running around in concrete. Hawkins is the guy I would want.

Just saw this from Browns GM Ray Farmer praising WR Taylor Gabriel.

... Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer addressed the media for the first time since training camp ...

... A receiver literally everyone in the Browns organization is gushing about is Taylor Gabriel. The rookie was supposed to just be a tryout body during rookie minicamp, and he’s risen all the way to the number three wide receiver on the depth chart.

“If you are looking for a guy that I think answered the call, did what he was supposed to do and showed people that he deserves a chance to play in this league, it was Taylor Gabriel,” said Farmer.

“I will give him his shout out and credibility. Now when you see the people and you smell the popcorn, we will find out if it really then all holds together. ”
I'll say it again, I think he 'could' be a legit sleeper.

He just seems like one of those guys who sticks around and will produce.

I really thought a few years ago they were heading in the right direction, then the new owner came in a cleaned house.

The thing about Hawkins, and I've been a fan of the guy, like him, is maybe lots of catches, but possibly low YPC.

From article...His best production was in 2012, when he had 51 catches for 533 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. ProFootballFocus.com ranked him 52nd out of 105 NFL receivers. He also finished eighth with an average of 6.9 yards after catch per reception, according to the website.

And he averaged 11.3 last year on limited touches. I don't think YAC will be his problem.

Until proven otherwise, I think you have to expect the veteran, the player with the biggest body, and the only WR with 1,000 yard seasons, Austin, to be the go-to receiver in this mix. He made it through camp without injury. He isn't the hot item because he isn't young, hasn't had a great season in a few years, and so people have soured on him. But I think he is the real value. Until I see someone else who hasn't done it, do it, I trust that if anyone is worth owning it will be Austin.

WR is a position that can be played by short, fast guys.

Also, this crew is a vast improvement over Little, Massaquoi, and Robiskie. Hard to blame the current F.O.
