John Oliver is the best thing on TV. (2 Viewers)

So this weeks episode dealt with translators and how we are leaving them dangling in the wind in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are leaving people that saved American lives to the tender mercies of the people they helped us against.

Do we get anything right any more?

i liked that much more than the translators piece. he kinda went off the rails there with it but the Supreme Court dogs saved it.
I think it was kind of hard to find the humor on that story. Personally I was more angry than anything else about what my country is doing to people that saved American lives on a daily basis. I think given what he does sometimes that will be the case.

Besides being hysterical I love the fact that he is exposing how ridiculous America is these days and how no one does a damn thing about it. Very funny and very sad too.

I love this show and watch it every week. Yet, I'm depressed at how he finds some many way in which America is inept and how nobody seems to do anything about it.

So, how do we do something about this latest travesty (translators being lost in the translation)?

I try to look at it the other way. Some of the segments are upsetting, especially the drone strike one and this one about the translators. But I'm glad someone is doing something about it and bringing it to light in a format that people will actually watch. There's no doubt its "working" to some extent- for example with the translators I bet a ton of people wrote their congressman/senators about it, so hopefully that means the existing laws that are set to expire will be renewed and there will be funding and pressure to simplify and speed up the process. And you can be sure that the #### hit the fan somewhere in the State Department and USCIS on Monday morning, too, so hopefully they'll be doing what they can to address the problem. Quality journalism that actually changes things and is presented in an incredibly entertaining format is pretty awesome.

Glad I finally clicked on this link BTW- I had always assumed this was a net neutrality thread , not a John Oliver thread. OP might want to change the thread title?

To give you an example of how the show can help: two months ago Congress passed an extension/expansion of the visa program for Afghan translators in a bipartisan effort. If you read that article you can see that Secretary Kerry is clearly already aware of the problem and working on turning things around- my guess is that the guest who appeared on the show yesterday was a beneficiary of that. Without the Oliver segment that stuff slips under the radar and everyone faces an uphill battle to get the funding and administrative changes- I mean, the Post article has zero comments, which is ridiculous, even an update of a fringe Nats' minor league guy gets a couple comments.

Now all of a sudden that stuff is off the back burner thanks to Oliver. The two reps pushing for reform will have a much easier time winning over their colleagues because members now know they can win over voters who are aware of it, Kerry has a much easier time pushing the career pencil-pushers to get the work done much faster, and so on. That should already happen thanks to Oliver, but obviously it helps even more if people write their congressmen/senators to support the efforts, donate to non-profits like this one, or frankly even just chat about it online to make more people aware of it.

The one this last weekend on state legislatures and ALEC wasn't their funniest or hardest-hitting work, but it was my favorite b/c it's always been a pet peeve of mine how little attention people pay to their state legislatures. In my opinion ALEC is the absolute worst thing going in American politics.

Oliver started last night. Anyone else catch this? Good points on Big Pharma scored.

My PCP only took $83, according to the site.

Totally forgot he was back last night. great surprise when I saw the dvr light click on just as I was ready to go to bed

I'm a fan, but didn't think this was a great one.
The exploitation of huge pharmaceuticals is a big player in the complete cluster#### of a medical system we have. Great way to kick it back off. I knew the bastards were just stuffing pills down people's throats I didn't know they were practically bribing doctors to do it.

I'm no fan of Big Pharma, so it's a worthy target for the show to skewer. I just didn't find the show as funny as many last season were.

I love what Oliver is doing. Love it.

That said, its depressing. We have so little actual control of what is going on in our country. We the people are routinely getting screwed. I guess I've always known this, but seeing it so bluntly illustrated every week makes me want to curl up into the fetal position.

How on earth could we possibly go about reforming all of this stuff?

pretty much on the same page as you, re: funny. that said- the fake commercial at the end was pretty brilliant.

and the subject seems like pretty low-hanging obvious fruit... worth taking down, sure- but if you've even seen The Fugitive, you should have an idea of what's going on.

My thinking is that (1) as depressing as this stuff is, we're probably still much better off than most existing or past powers in terms of accountability and transparency (which is kind of depressing too I guess, but at least we're trending the right way), and (2) the existence and relative popularity of shows like this already helps a lot. What we can do is keep watching and learning about the issues and encouraging other people to do the same. I posted earlier about how attention on the Afghan translator immigration story probably helped and will continue to help bring about change. Same goes for some of the other stuff he hits IMO. The more people that know about our drone strikes and how they might be causing us to lose "the battle for hearts and minds," the better. The more people that know how awful ALEC is, the better. And so on. If enough people care about each of these, eventually the politicians courting our votes have to address them.

I also love this show, It's opened my eyes to a lot of things going on in this country and the world as a whole that are just so horrible on so many levels.

People are routinely getting screwed.

In many ways I wish I didn't watch because ignorance is bliss...

Yes, the commercial was hilarious.
