Lolz.... I get it.What kind of mix do you guys use when your'e barching?
i liked that much more than the translators piece. he kinda went off the rails there with it but the Supreme Court dogs saved it.
I think it was kind of hard to find the humor on that story. Personally I was more angry than anything else about what my country is doing to people that saved American lives on a daily basis. I think given what he does sometimes that will be the case.i liked that much more than the translators piece. he kinda went off the rails there with it but the Supreme Court dogs saved it.
My only complain is he likes to pick on Boston.John Oliver is the Chris Carter of news. He scores touchdowns nearly every Sunday
I try to look at it the other way. Some of the segments are upsetting, especially the drone strike one and this one about the translators. But I'm glad someone is doing something about it and bringing it to light in a format that people will actually watch. There's no doubt its "working" to some extent- for example with the translators I bet a ton of people wrote their congressman/senators about it, so hopefully that means the existing laws that are set to expire will be renewed and there will be funding and pressure to simplify and speed up the process. And you can be sure that the #### hit the fan somewhere in the State Department and USCIS on Monday morning, too, so hopefully they'll be doing what they can to address the problem. Quality journalism that actually changes things and is presented in an incredibly entertaining format is pretty awesome.I love this show and watch it every week. Yet, I'm depressed at how he finds some many way in which America is inept and how nobody seems to do anything about it.
So, how do we do something about this latest travesty (translators being lost in the translation)?
That's a bonus for me.My only complain is he likes to pick on Boston.John Oliver is the Chris Carter of news. He scores touchdowns nearly every Sunday
That link is awesome. In case anyone missed it, Ted Cruz called net neutrality "Obamacare for the Internet."
TheOatmeal.com offered to educate him about net neutrality. (there's some NSFW written language in this link, but no video or audio.)
The exploitation of huge pharmaceuticals is a big player in the complete cluster#### of a medical system we have. Great way to kick it back off. I knew the bastards were just stuffing pills down people's throats I didn't know they were practically bribing doctors to do it.I'm a fan, but didn't think this was a great one.
I'm no fan of Big Pharma, so it's a worthy target for the show to skewer. I just didn't find the show as funny as many last season were. The exploitation of huge pharmaceuticals is a big player in the complete cluster#### of a medical system we have. pretty much on the same page as you, re: funny. that said- the fake commercial at the end was pretty brilliant.I'm no fan of Big Pharma, so it's a worthy target for the show to skewer. My thinking is that (1) as depressing as this stuff is, we're probably still much better off than most existing or past powers in terms of accountability and transparency (which is kind of depressing too I guess, but at least we're trending the right way), and (2) the existence and relative popularity of shows like this already helps a lot. What we can do is keep watching and learning about the issues and encouraging other people to do the same. I posted earlier about how attention on the Afghan translator immigration story probably helped and will continue to help bring about change. Same goes for some of the other stuff he hits IMO. The more people that know about our drone strikes and how they might be causing us to lose "the battle for hearts and minds," the better. The more people that know how awful ALEC is, the better. And so on. If enough people care about each of these, eventually the politicians courting our votes have to address them.I love what Oliver is doing. Love it.
That said, its depressing. We have so little actual control of what is going on in our country. We the people are routinely getting screwed. I guess I've always known this, but seeing it so bluntly illustrated every week makes me want to curl up into the fetal position.
How on earth could we possibly go about reforming all of this stuff?
it's on youtube... I don't have HBO, but still get to watch the show.HBO is way too expensive, but I can't quit this show.
I also love this show, It's opened my eyes to a lot of things going on in this country and the world as a whole that are just so horrible on so many levels.I love what Oliver is doing. Love it.

and the subject seems like pretty low-hanging obvious fruit... worth taking down, sure- but if you've even seen The Fugitive, you should have an idea of what's going on.
