Seahawks | Forsett candidate for starting job

Tue, 12 Aug 2008 10:52:02 -0700

The Seattle Times reports Seattle Seahawks RB Justin Forsett is one candidate for the starting job at running back. A seventh-round draft choice this year, Forsett ran for 58 yards on 13 carries in the team's preseason opener Friday, Aug. 8.

Right.

They didn't sign Jones to back up a 7th round rookie. Unless he's been amazing in camp, this is just coachspeak for "hey, we give everyone a shot!"

If he gets a pre-season start then he has a very small chance. But right now I think it is actually MoMo's job to lose.

only a couple posts, and one says Momo is starting, one says JJ, and ones says Forsett...Sounds like RBBC to me.

But right now I think it is actually MoMo's job to lose.
Speculation, or is there a link?
Holmgren said that they are "both starters" and he will "ride the hot hand".Right now that hand is MoMo's. And he has supposedly looked like one of the best players in camp.
Running back. As obvious as it appears that free-agent addition Julius Jones is the one to replace Shaun Alexander, coach Mike Holmgren reiterated that Jones and incumbent backup Maurice Morris will share the duties."I'm looking at it right now as if we have two starters at that position," Holmgren said. "That's how I talk to the players about it and that's how I'm going to kind of approach it during the season."Holmgren's approach is rooted in trying to keep both players healthy, since neither is as big as Alexander."In this day and age, you want to be the man," Holmgren acknowledged. "(But) it will certainly help our team if I can keep them both fresh and somewhat healthy through the course of the season by doing it this way."
Holmgren said he met with Julius Jones and Mo Morris yesterday and informed them of his plan to have them share carries. He said they both took it well and accepted it. He said he may even rotate who starts and then go with the hot hand. He also said he is asking T.J. Duckett to learn both fullback and halfback spots.

Forsett was productive in college but he's too small and too slow. The only way he starts is if both JJ and morris go down

I can't imagine that there's any possibility that Forsett will be a starting NFL running back. He was definitely a less impressive runner than JJ Arrington.

If he doesn't dive to the ground to avoid contact, then he's at least that far ahead of Arrington.

His chances went down a lot when Engram got hurt. A few articles on the Tacoma News Tribiune blog quotes Holmy as saying they usually keep 11 WR/RBs and with Branch and Engram out but counting against the total they have to have probably 7 WRs to have 5 for games the first few weeks. That leaves Forsett and probably Duckett out cold (MoMo, JJones, Weaver and Schmitt). I think his only real chance is if he's a special teams standout, but there he's fighting a hew other bubble players like Jordan Kent (likely to be WR5 IMO), Michael Bumpus and an LB whose name escapes me.

duckett looked so bad in preseason, JJ looked average, and MoMo looked great against Minn rush D (1st quarter!) 6 for 62 i believe

I don't believe he has any chance of starting this season, but I hope he makes the team and they cut Duckett. I think if you did a Seattle fan poll with regard to Duckett the vast majority would like to see him cut. Any other homers agree with that assessment? I don't know what the financial impact would be.

I agree 100%

This season was supposed to be Holmgren's last hurrah, but I'm starting to look at it as the first season of the Mora rebuild.

Fan polls have never, ever played any part in a management's roster moves. Anyway, I don't think you need a fan poll when he put the ball on the ground twice, even though both were reversed. I think he played himself out of a job. Forsett looks like a good project but unless Branch is healed enough to play when they make the final cuts or Forsett plays well enough to make JJ expendable then he's going to be out in the cold unless he makes it to the PS. If Engram wasn't hurt then maybe, but they need to carry 7 WRs due to injuries and Forsett will lose out.

 rebuild? As long as Hasselbeck is healthy, their offense will be fine. The defense is easily top 10 in the league, maybe top 5 with Kerney, Hill, Tatupu, Peterson, Trufant, etc.

Unfortunately, corrected.I'm convinced that Mora, Jr. can't coach - and getting Duckett because he's one of his guys is a bad sign.

Forsett looked, to me, about as good as Jones in the pre-season game.

I would like to see them carry 5 RB's - Morris, Jones, Weaver, Schmitt, Forsett.

I think they might be able to do it if one of two things happen:

1. Branch gets healthy sooner.

2. Frye performs well enough that Wallace can be WR5 and QB2.

The LB I think the other poster was referencing is David Hawthorne - aka "the Heater". When vets give rookies nicknames and talk about them on sideline interviews, it's a good sign. He's the backup MLB right now.

The team needed a short yardage back. Duckett has shown flashes in the past so why not sign the guy and try him out. If he doesn't work out, you cut him. So I don't know if I would hold that against Mora as a bad sign. It might be, but I think there are valid reasons for the move, even if he gets cut. If he makes the cut, then that could be a bad sign.Forsett did look average on runs as well as returns. But everything I've read about practices is that he is really looking very good.

Hawthorne made a pretty good case for himself against MN. Couple of bone jarring hits, one of which became a turnover. He certainly looked a lot better than Forsett did. As did Bumpus too.

After seeing Frye out there compared to Wallace I don't think the move is likely. Wallace can't be a better WR than he is as a backup QB. Especially since Matt is a little limited right now. Doesn't seem like the kind of chance Holmgren is likely to take. Who knows how he's going to be this year, maybe get Wallace out as a receiver on some trick plays.

I just don't see the case for Forsett being very good.

And I really don't see that Holmgren is going to be letting Mora put much of a handprint at all on the team. I just don't see him allowing it to happen. I'm sure there are some small things going on but not with team rebuilding while Holmgren is coaching.

I thought Forsett looked a bit a better than you did, and that's just a difference of opinion. I hope you're right about this not being a Mora, Jr. thing, but I worry about it. I'd rather try Schmitt blocking for Weaver at short yardage than Duckett.

I thought the forced fumbles were a great sign, and a hitter like Hawthorne should be able to be dynamite on ST - I think back to Fredd Young.

where does everyone stand now, after his 15-136-1 performance over the weekend?

Seems he's having a great preseason...

is MoMo really a starting RB?

Is this kid even getting drafted in dynasty leagues? His performance against the bears sounds like it was "electric". At 5' 6" his size gives me pause.

i think Mo isn't a sexy pick but he's proven effective when on the field. Solid YPC (4.5) and doesn't turn the ball over. Holmgren kept him because he trusts him. I think he's in the last year of his contract too. Mo isn't being talked about much but I don't think he's in danger of losing a part of the starting gig. Forsett may be moving ahead of JJ but much of that depends on JJ performance once the season starts.

Forsett's first carry against Chicago came around two minutes into the 3rd quarter and went for -2 yards. His next carry came with two minutes remaining in that 3rd quarter.

His first carry against Minnesota didn't come until the 4th quarter.

That tells us all we need to know, for now. If he starts getting the ball in the first half, or better still, the first quarter, that would be different.

while he did have a couple of nice runs against chi, most of his yardage came from a combo of great blocking and crappy defense. there were a few of his long runs where he had a wall of linemen in front of him running down the field. morris/jj would've had the same stat line... :goodposting:

people are falling in love with the stat line instead of watching the game.

Julius Jones got the start and did reasonably well (7/32). Looks like a two-man competition.
Morris is not and will never be a starter that s obvious . Morris = Mewelde Moore...If they tought Morris could start they would nt have invested in Jones .

you are 100% wrong on this. Morris very well could start, but I don't think it matters who starts. I think in every game this year Holmgren will give Morris and Jones series in the first half and then probably ride the better runner that day. Forsett is most definitley NOT in the hunt to start and in fact may lose out in the numbers game of making the 53 man roster. But his case may be helped by his performance and the probability that they will not be able to sneak him by to the practice squad - so it's really a case of him making hte roster or losing him all together.

did you see the game? jj looked pretty pathetic.this is going to come down to, as holmgren said, the hot hand. even though morris may not be the sexy pick, i think he's got the best shot at getting the majority of the snaps. he's got the overall game, albeit pretty ordinary.i don't think we can put too much weight into the "starter" in sea this year.

I used to believe the Julius hype but not anymore. Whatever he had his first 2 years in the league, he just doesn't have anymore. That running back job is very open in my opinion.

He's been very good as a returner, and that will help him make a roster - not necessarily the Seahawks with the injuries. He's looked good when he played, and might develop.

I think, if he makes the roster, there's a shot of him starting later int he year, because the vet RB's have been underwhelming. Unfortunately, he's looked so good, I odubt he makes it through to the practice squad.

I'm wondering if someone else is gonna grab him before me in my dynasty league. I keep getting visions of when I waited to roster Fast Willie and Tony Romo in the past (and missed out of course)

Bumping this for thoughts now that Forsett has made the team. What are the chances his playing time increases as the season wears on?

Pretty decent, since guys in forn of him haven't proven to be great, so even if he is mediocre, as EBF and others think - none of the guys in front of him are remotely special.

The Hawks essentially got to keep two extra players because of a pair of week 1 suspensions. Shorty Forsett still has one more cut day to survive next week when those suspensions are over. Most of what I've read in other places is that they'll cut a kicker (the rookie Cuotu as Mare's salary would be gauranteed at that point) and either Forsett or a DT (either Babin or Atkins, Babin being the favorite to stay). If cut, Forsett could still make the PS since almost all teams would already have their rosters and PSs set and he could slip through.Even if he stays I don't expect any impact other than at special teams and as a fan favorite.

This is true, and I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to get both those guys onto the PS.
