Gates tore plantar fascia (1 Viewer)

Antonio Gates was wheeling around Wednesday on a scooter that kept his right foot off the ground.

That’s the opposite foot from the toe and ankle injuries that were known to be hobbling him the past two weeks.

In the second half of Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, a game in which he caught five passes for 123 yards, Gates popped the plantar fascia in his right foot. Plantar fasciitis is the ailment for which Gates sought a medical opinion in May, but it had not bothered him this season until he attempted to compensate for the injuries around his left foot in the Chargers’ Oct. 24 loss to New England.

“My (right) foot was on fire,” Gates said of the aftermath of the Patriots game. “It was so bad, it was like my toe and ankle didn’t bother me anymore.”

The breaking of the plantar fascia actually allows for healing, eliminating the tightness with which Gates had to play against Tennessee. The plantar fascia is a band that runs from the heel to the toes and works with the arch of the foot when the foot pushes off. The tearing is extremely painful.

“It’s the worst feeling in the world,” Gates said. “Sometimes you feel your career is coming to an end.”

Monday, Gates had to be driven to his car in a cart because he couldn’t walk.

Dr. Phillip Kwong, a foot specialist with the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, said people find it difficult to walk for two weeks or more after tearing a plantar fascia.

“I think it’s going to be really tough to play with any proficiency this Sunday, unless they do a remarkable job anesthetizing him,” Kwong said. “… He has a lot of demands on him at his position,” Kwong said. “This injury will make it difficult for him to push off and be explosive.”

Gates has been able to play in relative comfort thanks to pain killing injections, but the hurt is almost intolerable when those wear off.

Gates declared privately after the Titans game he was out for this Sunday at Houston.

“I was in so much pain,” Gates said. “… But you take steps, you prepare the right way. I hope I can go.”

He described the scooter and other measures he is going through as giving him “a chance” to face the Texans.

“That’s how important this game is,” he said. “I know I said last week’s game was important. But the fact we won makes this game even more important.”

Like zoikes. I guess he'll be out til Week 11. Seems foolish to rush him back this week w/ the bye upcoming in Week 10

As a Rivers owner goof lord, who is he going to throw to this weekend? I have Crayton who I am starting this week because of Houston's pitiful D, he could potentially be force fed the ball like 10 catch type game.

I just yanked back all my trade offers for Gates. How quickly is he likely to be 100% again?
Article says approx 2 weeks to recover from most recent injury. With bye week coming up, week 11 would give him 3 weeks to heal.
The article said it's usually at least two weeks before people can start walking on it...that's different than playing some football. Though I realize these guys are tough and play hurt all the time.

I wonder if this is what he was getting taped up or worked on at halftime making him miss the first drive.

I think he plays. If the Chargers were 7-1, then no. But this is a must win, Gates has already shown willingness to play hurt in the past, and this doesn't seem to be an injury that will get worse with activity.

Most importantly, he'll play because my FF team absolutely needs him, and I'll begin to doubt the presence of a God in heaven above if I get screwed on this one...

I don't know, I wouldn't want to get another 1.2 pts from him like when he got injured.Wouldn't it be better to give him this week off, next week is the bye, then come back much more healthy?I don't have a backup TE, and at least all the top 15 are taken... I would have to pick up Ben Watson  and drop probably Ronnie Brown or Steve Johnson

Picked up Watson for the week 10 bye. Was hoping to only use him once...

Article said two weeks to be able to walk. Plantar fascitis takes months to go away. He won't heal until well after the season...

Doesn't sound like Plantar faciitis but a tear. That could be worse? Plantar faciitis usually feels worse when people are idle like in the middle of the night/early in the morning and gets better with activity. (at least that was my experience) I could play basketball then would pay dearly later in the night/early morning for a few weeks until I got the diagnosis and was told to stay off of it and wear my orthotics. Not sure that is what we have here with at "tear".

Wondering... given the dearth of receiving options, could this mean more involvement by Sproles in the passing game? I can see numerous swing passes and dump offs... actually, that may be all they have at this point.

Even if Gates had gangrene he'd just hack the leg off, get fit for a prosthesis, get a couple shots in the leg, and he'd be good to go.

Torn Plantar Fascia? PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Keep in mind I'm not a doctor.Plantar fasciitis seems like only a question of pain. I've had it in both feet and it was very bearable, even without medication. With rest it went away. Repeated use just seems to make the pain worse, but not doing any particular structural damage [i.e. not career threatening].

A tear in the plantar fascia. The first question is it complete or partial? Sounds like a partial tear (complete tears aren't as painful, as I understand). Depending on the location of the tear, and assuming he gets the right treatment (ice, taping the arch of the foot, not putting weight on it, orthotics [he probably already has these]), Gates could be pain free within a week. It could also drag on much longer than that, but in these cases you could probably take some injections for the pain.

So as long as the tear is mostly healed by game time and/or he's not at risk for a complete tear of the plantar fascia by playing, my guess is he'll play. If the plantar fascia fully tears, there will be less (no) pain but his mobility and effectiveness will go way down, and the healing time to get his foot right again will go way up.

ETA: Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, distinguishing it from a tear/rupture.

Gates has proved in the past he is a tough dude and willing to play through injury. If he suits up, you have to play him. Even if the yardage isn't there he's still their top option in the red zone so he can still remain productive while limited physically.

Rivers has thrown for 298, 334, 455, 241, 431, 249, 336, 305 yards this year.

Whoever says McMichael is irrelevant are the same people who passed on Tamme last week.

I'm a Gates owner, and I just picked up McMichael. Drop that 2nd D or 6th WR and thank me later, Gates owners.

I dunno why you guys are evening debating it, he's going to play even if they have to wheel him out there on a Rascal.

This is what I'd expect.

This has already been happening. Sproles production since the Floyd injury has been decent. If Gates somehow cannot go, I expect Crayton and Sproles to be the top 2 receiving options. Then sprinkle in Ajirotutu and McMichael. UGH

There looks to be serious doubt about his availability for Week 9

-Dont like hearing that career ending part
