Windows 10, anyone upgrading? (1 Viewer)

seems like every new "update" from these guys is just a more expansive invasion of privacy that we click "yes" on.

i upgraded my desktop (bootlegged Win7 Ult --> Win10 pro) and laptop (win 7 home --> win10 home) this weekend. seemed uneventful.

No kidding. If that dude is serious, he'd better unplug today regardless of his OS.
Yup, and people freak out about the types of information sent back without realizing how the information is being used. It's pretty much all computer algorithms. We should be concerned about it, yes, and I would like to find other ways of providing the kinds of personalized services that sharing our information does. But I'm also not willing to give up things like speech recognition, computerized assistance (Google Search, Google Now, Cortana, etc) and other things like that. It's early in this process, and maybe we'll find a way that doesn't require sharing personal information. Maybe it can be de-personalized before being shared. And maybe the information being gathered just isn't that important to keep private in the first place. I'm not sure, but I am sure that people are really over-reacting to things, like usual.
It seems like most of the items in the Privacy settings are only relevant if you install apps from the Windows Store but there are some things that seem unclear to me. Not nefarious or anything but more along the lines of "WTF do you guys want/need access to this info?"So what do these things mean:

Let apps use my advertising ID for experiences across apps

Send Microsoft info about how I write to help improve typing and writing in the future.

App connector? (no real info on google about it but I presume it relates to Windows Store apps. It does seem to want access to everything)

Windows and Cortana can get to know your voice and writing to make better suggestions for you. We'll collect info like contacts, recent calendar events, speech and handwriting patterns, and typing history.

I don't have anything to hide but some of that, particularly collecting my contacts, seems like none of their GD business.
Wouldn't your administrative assistant have your roladex? It's like everything else, sacrifice privacy for convenience.

This version still doesn't have any Windows Media Center (or similar) add on, correct? If I have a networked TV tuner (which I do), I wouldn't be able to view any channels with a Windows 10 computer?

You'd have to use something other than WMC: kodi, media portal, wintv, etc.

So Microsoft wants to be my administrative assistant?

Okay.

Two questions today:

1) Does anyone know how to change the default Mail app to point to another App? When I go into the default programs and select Mail, it only gives me one choice and that is the resident app in Windows 10

2) For apps that I have downloaded from the store, will they update automatically or is that a global setting I need to make some where?

I'm wondering if MSFT licensing is smart enough to not let me install my Win7 on a 2nd computer after I upgrade to Win10?

Gonna give it a shot at some point. But I'm still scared to upgrade first.

I'm getting a vista vibe here. Reading other forums a major complaint is microsoft, who promised easy elimination of bloatware, came through on that then just added a ton of MS bloat, ads, pop ups... relentlessly? Is this valid. I despise bloat. Gave away a near new Lenova just to get it out of my house. Run a chromebook 99% of the time.

Still considering a gaming build that would need windows... sigh.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by bloatware but I have not seen a single add, pop up or anything like that.

I did turn off every item in the privacy section as soon as I upgraded so that may be why I am not seeing anything like you described.

It is still very early but this has been my favorite windows in a long long time.

I really hope this is not the case. I am getting really tired of the ad revenue model for software.

Same here. No problems whatsoever.

Probably just some Windows haters spreading nonsense.

Are there any features on Windows 10 worth an upgrade from Windows 7 for? Gui looks better than 8, but still behind 7 and OSX...

Yep. Mysterious "memory leaks" and bloatware that no one else seems to be getting.

I went from 7 to 10 a few days ago. Nothing to fear. Computer is running great; the taskbar and start menu is neat. My only complaint is that W10 doesn't quite agree with my Replay Video Capture. The output volume is much lower than it used to be. Gotta figure out what's what there.

This is all personal preference stuff but the GUI blows away Windows 7 for me.

As for features, it depends on how you use the computer since some of Windows 10 is meant to blur the lines between tablets and laptops (almost as if it was being designed for the Surface).

Downloaded Win10 onto a USB at work to install on a few machines like my laptop and my MIL's laptop. Did full backups, restore point and ISO. Just need to take the plunge now.

I just checked the Windows 10 compatibility site and Dell and my laptop Latitude E5520 isn't listed. Has anybody installed it on a computer that wasn't listed yet?

I'm in!

I've been playing with the Technical Preview since last October and I really, really like it. It's everything Windows 8 SHOULD have been and more. Currently have all of my PCs on Windows 7 and will upgrade them all.
This, and the entire house already done... Recommend it to anyone!

:hey:

It's running great on my Asus G75VX. However I had a PITA initially because there was a specific incompatibility between Win 10 and my Cisco VPN software. Once I uninstalled that it went smoothly and I am really liking the experience so far.

What makes certain pc's not be compatible for Windows 10? Does ten require certain hardware be in place?

Drivers.

Thanks Chaka and Cliff. I'll jump in too. Not super excited if there's a major driver or video issue but what's the worst that can happen, right?

Haven't read anything about people losing information yet or requiring a re-install. If you're running 7 or 8, it will most likely be fine.

Just upgraded a Surface (no keyboard attached). Maybe I'm missing something, but the keyboard not popping up when touching in a box is absolutely ridiculous. It does in Chrome/FF but not in Edge/Office/search/etc. That is a pretty ####ty oversite.

Yeah, me either.

Worst case I have seen so far is that you will have to roll back and Win 10 makes that pretty easy to do.

New operating systems frighten and confuse me.

I've got 8.1 looking and running like Windows 7...I'll stick with it for a while.

I like it when works, but I have a huge warning for people that have jobs that require them to use third party software to connect to VPNs for work. My work uses OpenVPN to allow us access to our production servers with Softlayer, so I've got that installed on pretty much all of my computers. On 2/2 computers I've upgraded so far, I've permanently lost Network connectivity for all adapters after my first reboot of the machine (everything works fine until that first reboot). I've had to revert the upgrade on both machines. There's no way to recover the network connections without reinstalling. Supposedly you can revert, uninstall the VPN software, upgrade, then install the VPN software and it works. We'll see.

Anyone else having trouble with their index? The windows quick search stuff (search bar next to the windows button) doesn't work at all for me, just keeps searching forever even for simple stuff like notepad, calculator, or photoshop. I rebuilt my entire index, it said it indexed over 1,000,000 items, but still no go. Can't get anything to pop up in there.

no issues for me. I use it a ton too as I find it very convenient to find apps or resources

I had the same problem. I can verify that uninstalling my Cisco VPN client allowed me to upgrade and all my network adapters were visible. However I have not tried reinstalling the VPN since the upgrade.

Most of you guys having issues need to clean up all the nasties you got from all the porn sites you've been too.

Stop blaming it on Windows 10 and acting like we all don't know why your computer isn't working correctly.

I had just done a fresh install of 8.1 like a week prior to getting my upgrade so I only had like 32 hours of porn time logged on the new install.

Does the upgrade fix porn site viruses and malware?

If so, maybe I'll just wait a month or 2 to upgrade after it gets real bad.

How the F does Candy Crush end up as one of my tiles. I hate that crap.

I wonder how much King coughed up to Microsoft to make that a default.

> Advertising ID

This is a Windows Store App thing, "To provide more relevant advertising, Windows allows apps to access a unique identifier for each owner of a device". That way they in theory aren't giving information that is personally identifiable, but in practice, it's been proven that given enough data, the unique ID is often enough to pinpoint a user.

> how i write

Microsoft collects writing and typing samples to improve the handwriting analysis and word prediction. If they are doing it right, it not only helps everyone, but it should customize to you personally as well, so your devices recognize your handwriting better and also get better at word prediction. More useful for phones/tablets vs. computers, obviously.

> contacts, calendar events, typing history

For typing history, see the "how I write" stuff. For Contacts, calendar events, Microsoft would like Cortana to be able to be like Google Now (which also needs access to things like that) where it surfaces relevant content when you need it, before you ask for it. It needs to know your events, for instance, so it can say, "hey, you need to leave now to make it to your concert on time", and stuff like that. Contacts need to be requested so it can provide contact info when you search.

------

I think a lot of the confusion is due to Microsoft rolling phone/desktop all into one thing basically, when means there are privacy options that just don't really make sense on desktop (like contacts) that are perfectly commonplace on a phone. Anyways, most everything I have been seeing complained about in the press can be turned off, and it's all pretty simple to find.

I never received the upgrade notification so I downloaded Windows 10 last night through the Microsoft website. I run my Windows 8 OS on my SSD, D:. There was no option to select a drive so I assumed Windows 10 would replace my Windows 8 OS on the same D:. Wrong... The Windows 10 OS is now on my older, spinning hard Drive, C: and everything including Windows 10 and Chrome are running much, much slower on this spinning hard drive C:.

I had previously made a restore point while running Windows 8. When I tried to roll back to Windows 8 from the day prior, Windows 10 says that all restore points were deleted? I have also downloaded the Windows 10 upgrade to a bootable USB thumb drive. The issue is that when I go through the installation process, it says that my product key is invalid. Is this because I have already installed the update to and am running Windows 10 on my C:?

I would simply like to re-install Windows 10 on my D: SSD rather than the current C:.

Please advise and thanks in advance.

From what I've read you needed to upgrade first anyway. Once you've upgraded for free, Microsoft recognizes your machine as Win 10 and puts a key on there. If you thereafter do a clean install it will recognize that key automatically. There are tons of forums where people are talking about upgrading and then either doing a clean install over the top or moving their license to a new drive or PC. Find one of those for the particulars.

They hosed up the communication about how this works imo. When it asks for the product key, that's not your Win7 or 8.1 key. Once the upgrade is done over the top of your current OS, and you want to do a clean install after that, when Enter your Key comes up you hit "Skip" and the MS syncs with the New embedded Win 10 activation code which was put on your machine when you upgraded. You never have to put in your Win7/8 activation code.

*If you do a clean install before upgrading on the OS in place you will need a paid Win 10 activation key and thus will not be upgrading for free. You'd need to roll-back, upgrade in place, then be able to clean install.

That's what I know. Proceed with caution. I just upgraded last night and got through the basic Spam settings (Hint: Do a custom install so you can turn off all the spyware). I had an issue with the USB Activation Tool which wasted a lot of my time and I had to download from scratch rather than use the files I downloaded onto the USB earlier.

Went from 7 to 10 last night. Seems pretty cool...way better than 8 in my short time using it. I said no to all of the privacy junk, can always turn it back on if I feel like I need that cortera crap.

Since you upgraded to a regular drive rather than your SSD, you could also run Belarc Advisor (Free) which inventories everything on your computer (doesn't send it out). Make note or take pics so you have the Win 10 activation key. Compare the two. It should be different than your Win7/8 key.

Then if you run into problems relocating to the SSD you still have your Free Win 10 code. I read about another guy who did this. I did not need to nor have I tried it myself.

Thanks. I spent 2+ hours on hold with Microsoft...

I will try this. I have seen two different keys; one from 8.1 and a new one from 10.

When I tried to do a clean install on the SSD D:, neither were recognized.

iOS and Android apps to be available in Windows 10's Windows Store.

Huge IMO.

No reason not to get a Surface 4 Pro now.

“Our goal with the iOS bridge has never been simply to run iOS apps on Windows,” Salmaan Ahmed, the Windows Bridge for iOS program manager, explained. “Rather, our goal is to help you write great Windows apps that use as much of your existing code and knowledge as possible. We will, of course, continue to work to expand our iOS compatibility, but it’s important to note that there is much more you can do with the bridge.”
