Government Response for a Nuclear Explosion

"Nuclear explosions can cause significant damage and casualties from blast, heat, and radiation but you can keep your family safe by knowing what to do and being prepared if it occurs.

A nuclear weapon is a device that uses a nuclear reaction to create an explosion.

Nuclear devices range from a small portable device carried by an individual to a weapon carried by a missile.

A nuclear explosion may occur with or without a few minutes warning.

Fallout is most dangerous in the first few hours after the detonation when it is giving off the highest levels of radiation. It takes time for fallout to arrive back to ground level, often more than 15 minutes for areas outside of the immediate blast damage zones. This is enough time for you to be able to prevent significant radiation exposure by following these simple steps:

GET INSIDE

Get inside the nearest building to avoid radiation. Brick or concrete are best.

Remove contaminated clothing and wipe off or wash unprotected skin if you were outside after the fallout arrived. Hand sanitizer does not protect against fall out. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, if possible. Do not use disinfectant wipes on your skin.

Go to the basement or middle of the building. Stay away from the outer walls and roof. Try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household. If possible, wear a mask if you’re sheltering with people who are not a part of your household. Children under two years old, people who have trouble breathing, and those who are unable to remove masks on their own should not wear them.

STAY INSIDE

Stay inside for 24 hours unless local authorities provide other instructions. Continue to practice social distancing by wearing a mask and by keeping a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who not part of your household."

This 80's nostalgia is out of control. 🤡🌍

Terrell Jermaine Starr on MSNBC is doing some great field reporting in Ukraine, riding around with guerillas and armed citizens hunting down saboteurs

CNN has been bringing on people for three days, asking them why we aren't putting boots on the ground, or instituting a No Fly Zone. Over and over, people from both parties are giving them the same answer.

WTF are they trying to do?
Been watching CNN and Fox the past few days and we are clearly seeing something completely different.  Fox seems to focus on their Biden Admn has not done enough to help Ukraine rhetoric, after Tucker dedicated his time to talking about how he supports Putin, while CNN is focused on the refugees and how the Ukrainians are doing everything they can to repel the Russians.
🤷‍♂️

Noah Smith Video interview: Rob Lee, Russian defense policy specialist

Among the key things I learned:

There were lots of signs in advance that this would be a real war instead of another bluff.

After he failed to bully Ukraine into making concessions, Putin probably felt he had to invade or his threats would never be taken seriously again.

Putin bet on Ukraine folding quickly, and didn’t really have a plan B.

Because they kept the invasion secret, Russian leaders didn’t tell their troops what their objectives were. Now many of those troops don’t know what they’re doing. This is one big reason Russia is taking mounting losses without really accomplishing much.

Russian forces aren’t coordinating well, allowing them to be picked off one by one. This is why weapons like Javelins, Stingers, and TB-2s are able to be effective.

So far, the Russians have been reluctant to inflict civilian casualties. This could change; they could decide to level Kyiv or other Ukrainian cities.

If they get the order to level Ukrainian cities, there’s the chance Russian units might disobey.

Putin’s political legitimacy and grip on power are under greater threat now than at any other time.

Putin seems to be acting irrationally and unpredictably, and many Russians are astonished at his moves. No one really knows what he’ll do next.

The U.S. and NATO need to act predictably and deliberately in order not to start World War 3. A no-fly zone over Ukraine would be a huge and catastrophic mistake.

In other words, the current situation is very unstable and scary.

This guy gets it.  IMO we're way, way closer to WWIII than most think.  It's going to be hard to get a good night's sleep for a while.

On an ancillary note, the US Embassy is urging Americans to evacuate Russia.  Damn

Don't disagree with these and a lot of them have proven out.. But if Putin levels Kyiv, I am afraid WWIII starts, if the Russian people don't revolt first.

Just replying how will US be perceived if Ukraine is successful. Hindsight is 20/20 and we don't know "what would have happened" or what was feasible or not. It took a nation literally sacrificing their lives before anyone really started stepping up.
I think criticism of the US actions before the invasion is fair, but yeah, all will be forgiven if the Stingers keep rolling in.

I would point out that there are many countries that can be criticized for refusing to believe he would actually invade, including Ukraine.

I'm a huge fan of Zelensky, I agree with everything people here are saying. He absolutely did not do a great job of preparing his citizens for this.

I also include response by NATO, which includes US also, even though I believe the OP originally was referring to US.

@kiraincongress: Less then hour till the #negotiations start. Need to remember:

- #Russia has a weak position now

- was not able to take any #Ukrainian city

- is heavily sanctioned

- soldiers are out of supplies

So we need to demand #Russian army out of Ukraine. #UkraineRussiaWar

I thought they did take that one city of 100k people?

@NikaMelkozerova: Remember I said I had a feeling we were alone a couple of days ago? Well, now we in Ukraine feel the whole world supports us. EU provides jets, SWIFT cut, Anonymous fighting for us. Poland, Romania shelter Ukrainians, provide aid, weapons. Even Hungary provides fuel! Heartwarming

MSNBC says Russia is sending nobodies to the peace talks this morning while Ukraine is sending serious individuals. Shows how serious Russia is about the talks I guess.

Now I'm confused. They were or were not able to take any cities?

Not sure who this is. Coup attempt in Belarus? Watch the video in link.

@Tsihanouskaya: Lukashenka committed treason – he made our country a participant in the invasion of Ukraine. So I declared myself as the national leader of Belarus to protect the sovereignty & independence of our country, represent it in security negotiations & crisis management in the region. https://twitter.com/Tsihanouskaya/status/1497583706038484996/video/1
This is weirdly entertaining to watch the Russian allied country suddenly thrown into its own political shenaniganery.

Reports on the ground said many civilians didn't think an invasion was going to happen. Partly because Zelensky didn't take the threats seriously for quite a while. He did not stock supplies or food, in preparation. The Western world could have made a lot of preparations before the attack, weapons and supplies could have been moved into place beforehand.

20/20 hindsight and all that, of course. And I am his biggest cheerleader, believe me.

Only reason I brought it up is because someone mentioned late response by the US. There were a lot of people raising the alarm, smart people that said to believe Putin when he made every intention clear to invade. The EU, the US, Ukraine as well.

Like...  War games??? The only reason people believed that is because they wanted to believe it.

@AVindman⚡️Russian Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, reportedly fired today. Gerasimov was very highly regarded, the most important military leader of the past generation, & the architect of today’s Russian Armed Forces. He’s served as the head of the military since 2012.

This has been up for at least 3 years. Probably more - that’s just as far back as the internet archive goes. Just posting this because posting it the way you did (totally unintentionally, I’m sure, what with the clown emoji and commentary) makes it seem like it just happened.

Right or wrong, I think most believed that it was going to happen, but were trying to do whatever they could to not give Russia any ammunition at all to claim that it was the other side that was escalating things and “forcing” their hand.

I know it says reportedly there, but should be stressed, this is unconfirmed, and Vindman got some static for this report.

I think Gerasimov should avoid open windows in high buildings, either way

Thanks for the explanation...wanted to make sure there wasn't a typo given you a "big cheerleader".  Nitpicking, but did a poor job is cleaner than Absolutely did not do a great job. Not a double negative, but a positive-negative-positive.  Regardless, thanks for the insight.

There's some nasty images, and I don't want to link to them, but a Twitter search of #Kharkiv strongly suggests that the Russians have gotten more comfortable shelling civilian targets.

I fully expect the Russian military to display it's complete lack of morals, compassion and adherence to international humanitarian law.

Heck, I should have just said that a LOT of people could have done more in preparation

Hi Joe.  I'm not a big fan of people posting random drivel from MSNBC or FOX that they heard, but is linking any random person off twitter sharing an opinion or posting a video from 5 years ago really that much better?

That's why I said MSNBC, but you're right, I will try be more specific.

Also, could people try reference when they info they are posting came out? I've been trying to do so with tweets.

Overview of the first real day Russia is dealing with these financial sanctions.

The monetary authority also ordered companies to sell 80% of their foreign currency revenues, increased the range of securities that can be used as collateral to get loans and temporarily banned Russian brokers from selling securities held by foreigners. It did not specify which securities the ban applies to
