When they said something about CLE being the only other team, I thought they also said something about "post expansion". Could this be the explanation?

85 Broncos went 11-5 and didn't make it when there were 5 playoff teams per conference. pats are the first to miss with 6 playoff teams per conference.

There were 3 teams in the 60s not to make the postseason with 11 wins (thus the pre merger talk):

62 Detroit Lions 11-3 (Only 2 teams in the NFL made it to the post season (AFL was its own league))

63 Green Bay Packers 11-2-1 (Only 2 teams in the NFL made it to the post season (AFL was its own league))

67 Baltimore Colts 11-1-2 (Only 4 teams made the playoffs)
