2014 Concerts Thread (2 Viewers)

I'm reliving the glory days of my youth with The Vandals, Bad Religion, Pennywise and the Offspring all coming together. Offspring have become incredibly bad but on this tour they're playing the entire Smash album. One of the first CDs ever purchased by a young HH, so I ll be checking that out.
I'm considering this for the same reason (good pop-punk bands and the Offspring's one good album)
I'm pretty sure I'm going to this in Denver in August. Smash was the first album I ever bought and will always be an all-time classic for me. I couldn't even guess how many times I listened to it in middle school. I can't miss the opportunity to see the whole album performed live.

Attended:

Har Mar Superstar - fantastic to finally see him. Will never miss a show again.

Caroline Smith - I like her newest album. I need some music to share with my spouse.

Arctic Monkeys - Lots of swagger. I would have liked a little more intensity.

Queens of the Stone Age - killer show. Hot and sweaty rock and roll.

Rodriguez - fun to see him give life to the music from the documentary.

HAIM - rocked a lot more guitar than I expected. Irresistible chemistry.

Blood Red Shoes - I really dig this pair a lot. UK duo on a club tour - highly recommend them if they are coming through your town.

Band of Skulls - very tight group and the most beautiful gear I've seen all year.

Tickets acquired:

Chvrches - I gave up these tickets to my wife

Jack White (St. Louis and Milwaukee)

Paul McCartney

Har Mar Superstar/Doomtree/Bob Mould/Cloud Cult

Glen Hansard

Clutch

Chris Robinsons's Brotherhood was great on Saturday here at Cervantes - shows like this are just a whole lot more fun in Denver these days. These guys had a great Dead and Beatles rooftop vibe/sound going all night. Nice 10-11 minute version of "Never been to Spain" - sweet 20 minute "Sugaree" to end the night - Rosalee was rocking. Neal Casal just laying down beautiful lines all night long. New record is good- go see them this summer if you can.

Jennifer Nettles/Brandy Clark last month in Austin (ACL Moody). It was carried live on Sirius/XM also. Good show. She did a mix of hits and current. Her previous work is better than her current solo album. Brandy has written several country hits (Miranda's "Not My Mother's Broken Heart"). She was solo/acoustic and 15 minutes was plenty - everything started sounding the same.

Bon Jovi in a couple weeks in Orlando.

Saw Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley this weekend in different headlining shows.

Brad's show was the first of a new tour (Randy Houser being the main opener, along with Leah Turner and Charlie Worsham). Show was OK - I am not sure if it was the muddy sound or the lack of energy or both, but I think of the three Paisley shows I have seen in the past four years, this one comes in third.

In contrast, Dierks Bentley's show (about the third or fourth of the tour) was fantastic. Was hoping to hear more of the new album, but the new material he did play is strong alongside his older material. Main opener was Chris Young who got a set about an hour (Bentley only played 90 minutes) - with Chase Rice and Jon Pardi for the early arrivers. This was my 2nd Dierks show after seeing him for the first time opening for Miranda last summer.

If you had to choose, I would go to Dierks' show rather than Brad's.

Elbow tomorrow night!
This was good but not as good as the last time I saw them. Garvey's voice is incredible, and the band sounded tight, so there's not a lot to complain about there, it just comes down to the song selection. It was a Saturday night, I was staying over in Toronto and ready to let loose and the set was mostly dominated by slower songs (and almost all from Seldom Seen Kid/Build a Rocket/Takeoff Landing - the first three albums might as well not have existed).

This was the setlist (the run from Real Life to Mirrorball are all fairly slow, I was so happy to hear the climax on "The Birds" it's all I've wanted to hear since:

Charge

The Bones of You
New York Morning
Real Life (Angel)
The Night Will Always Win
Fly Boy Blue / Lunette
The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver
Great Expectations
Scattered Black and Whites
Mirrorball
The Birds
Grounds for Divorce
My Sad Captains
-----
Lippy Kids
One Day Like This

I think I'm going to go to RiotFest in September in Toronto. The Cure, The National, The Flaming Lips, The New Pornographers, Metric, DFA1979, etc...

I was at the Paisley show too. I'm assuming you were at the Camden NJ kick-off show. I agree the sound was a little off. I wasn't sure if it was just that we were sitting a bit too far to stage-right, or if it was the overall sound. My first Paisley concert, so I enjoyed it, but I've seen better country concerts overall.

I saw Brad Paisely a few years back on what I'm going to assume was his first time playing arenas, 2007-ish in Ottawa. Great show.

I caught Willie Nelson's son, Lukas, last Saturday in Solana Beach. Man, was I impressed. Really good guitar player and certainly honing his craft. Someone told me he's played over 400 shows in the last 3 years??? Voice could use 10 years of cigs but wasn't bad and it will get there.

Based out of Cali and Hawaii... Must've grown up in Hawaii.

You were at Feista del Sol? Let a brotha know next time, fool.

Yes, it was the Camden show on 5/16 - and I was probably in your same area, as I was in the back right section (facing the stage) roughly seven rows from the back and in the middle of the section. My first Paisley show was in 2012 on the opposite side, but about seven rows up and I don't recall the sound on that night being as bad as it was this year.

Awesome lineup tonight at CMA fest but can't make it tonight. Rascal Flatts, Dierks Bentley, Alabama, Luke, Brantley Gilbert, McGraw

Saw Bruno Mars/Pharrel last Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl. Going to James Taylor tonight. Love outdoor concerts in summer in SoCal.

Booked Tom Petty at the new Forum in October.

Nice. I'd like to see JT, never have, probably never will. Woulda gone but I was in...Missouri. Saw Billy Joel at the Bowl a few weeks ago, that was pretty cool. Probly the first and last chance I get for that guy.

Those huge screens they have on the side certainly enhance the experience (for those with less dinero). The place is huge. Tickets in the first 1/3 of the place were through the roof...for a BJ concert anyway <insert joke>. I mean $400 and up. And I went on Tuesday; easily the cheapest night. Although I got lucky and got in for around 50 bucks. They released tickets at the box office after the show started at a fraction of the cost. One agent said nothing was available...and I walked. Scalpers were all but gone so maybe 10 minutes later I tried again and the next agent typed around for awhile and found something. Ended up in a handicap section -- perfect.

Anyway, I'm with you on Tom Petty at the Forum. Can't wait. Seen him there before and it was awesome. He loves it there. Final show of the tour, no? I tried on Ticketbastard but got nowhere. How did you get yours? I ####### love the Fabulous Forum. So glad it's back.

JT was really good. He did all of his classics but really liked when he jammed some blues stuff. Phenomenal night - perfect weather. I agree with you about the screens at the Bowl. I got tickets from Goldstar dirt cheap, sat in P3. Perfect. Prefer to sit on the sides (K3, P3) if not in a box. Better than the center now if you are not up close. By the way, be very aware scalping tickets. Floods of fakes for Bruno Mars last week. Hard tickets exact except for different font on barcodes. People lost up to a grand. Sucks.

As for Tom Petty, my sister in law goes is in his fan club so got pre-sale. The new Forum is awesome. Can't wait - never seen him.

Adding Justin Timberlake to my list in the fall. Might get a years worth of dots from the wife for that one. Those tickets will be spendy on the secondary market.

CMA Fest is awesome. Like hanging on the Riverfront as much as LP Field.
Definitely. David Nail was awesome today.Zac Brown Band stole the show tonight. Best performance of the week.
For anybody that can get to Nashville cheaply you can go to CMA fest for close to free on Sunday. So many people are in for multiple days and fly home Sunday, flooding the market with great seats. Practically giving them away. I think I got them for $10 one year when I was in town.

That's exactly right. We drove down to scalp Friday night but all the tickets were ridiculous. We were going to scalp Saturday night but it came a flood and they let everyone in the stadium without checking tickets. We just stayed in and watched the show for free. On Sunday, we got lower level seats for free but ended up trading up and paying $40 for 2 floor seats. Got to meet Blake out back on Friday too. Great week! Not a big Hunter Hayes fan either but the kid can sing. Best week of the year in Nashville.

For the old guys out there, the Elvis Costello solo tour is a can't miss show if it comes your way. His voice is still very strong, great guitar work, telling stories as he works through his massive body of music with just himself, a few guitars and a keyboard on stage.

setlist from last night

Think he's coming to the Hollywood Bowl or Greek in LA...

:lmao: YES. Big fan of Diarrhea Planet now, what a show.

Still haven't really had time to sit back and remember all the bands. Such a great weekend.

Taking my 13 year old to his second concert in Toronto. Last year it was Muse for his first. Next Is Jack White with Benjamin Booker

If I can get the next night off, I will take him to NiN and Soundgarden.

Might as well start him young!

I took my dad to go see Nick Cave at the Schnitz on July 5. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Nick engaged the audience like no other, I've never seen someone mesmerize the crowd like he did.

The band was brilliant as well, especially Warren Ellis, freaking wizard. I lost count after five instruments.

I had front row tickets that were somewhat negated as Nick told the event before show that he wanted no crowd control, then tweeted 'come on down, no crowd control'. Hence a large group of people in front of front row.

Anyone who's on the fence about seeing him, just do it. Stagger Lee was just about a religious experience.

I was just to the left of the person taking the video, Higgs Boson Blues. My father almost got trampled on by Nick, as he was walking over people to get further into the crowd. Crazy night...

Newport Folk Fest next weekend.

pretty excited. Talking my kids too.
Make sure to catch Hurray for the Riff Raff
oh ya? I went through everyone I didn't know during the lineup rollout. I have a few of there songs on a Newport playlist, but they didn't really jump out.

My Must Sees:

Reignwolf

Ages and Ages

J. Roddy Walston

Sun Kill Moon (though this is ruined bc of the timing - against Band of Horses - Kids must see)

I like this one from them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMtwjaNuQ8w

and this one

http://youtu.be/GsfNmg9dGpM

Lots of quirky cool murder ballads and the like plus Lynda Lee is a great singer/songwriter

Saw Blake Shelton/Band Perry for the kickoff of Blake's 2014 tour in Austin on June 20th. Excellent time. Kimberly Perry was 110% energy for about an hour. Blake was excellent also. I don't think that was water he was sipping all night. No sign of Miranda.
