A student's grade in a course is the average of 4 test grades and a final exam that is worth four times as much as each test. Suppose a student has test grades of 89, 90, 75, and 90. Write an equation to model this situation where x is the student's grade on the final exam and y is the student's average for the course.

Then find the score they will need to receive on their final exam if they want to have a grade of 88 for the course.

Final exam score needed=___________________ =

(354 + 4x) / 8 = y

(354 + 4x) / 8 = 88

354 + 4x = 88 * 8

354 + 4x = 694

4x = 340

x = 340 / 4

x = 85, you would need an 85 on the final.

Did I pass?

Almost. The sum of the tests was 344, not 354, so the final needed to be 90, not 85.

How did you figure that you needed to divide by 8?

ETA- nm, I see it now. Thanks!

This also works:

0.125(344)+ 0.5x = y

Basically y=x/2 + 43 if you wanted to graph it

Any particular form the teacher wants it in? It really should be in slope intercept or standard, we aren't barbarians.
