Its possible that gray will play st, and bold in will get more work at RB, but I agree he's a good stash and see. Thanks to this thread I was alerted to this and picked him up just now. Appreciate it guys!
Could end up being nothing but I think it is saying a lot that white is inactive and gray leapfrogged him from the practice squad. We know bolden has a big role on special teams so giving him the Ridley role to himself would be overworking him.
I suspect that bolden gets first crack but gray will get some chances and if he impresses they'll keep him in and his role could expand greatly moving forward.
Roll the dice gents!
If "the work" is defined as 2 carries...The guy in my league who broke the bank for Bolden and White has to be thrilled with Gray getting the work.

Apologies for that coming across as a personal slight. I simply meant despite Gray apparently being the next-in-line, they haven't used a next-in-line. They've used Vereen almost exlusively.I wrote that an hour and a half ago, Columbo. If "the work" is defined as 2 carries...The guy in my league who broke the bank for Bolden and White has to be thrilled with Gray getting the work.
It's a close game and vereen has their trust. He doesn't fumble.Vereen in now is telling, though.
Maybe. Look I'd rather roster Gray than Bolden (already cut him in the one place I threw a dart), but I'm not expecting consistency from either one.rickyg said:It's a close game and vereen has their trust. He doesn't fumble.elbowrm said:Vereen in now is telling, though.
If they were up by a few scores I bet gray would be in.
These happen in part because people are so desperate for the next big thing that it seems they create threads for hype so others around the fantasy world have something to get excited about. This guy is a Patriots RB, what are people really expecting?A Jonas Gray thread....for those of you in 64-team leagues.
I think we officially have a thread on every offensive player in the NFL.
Dude, the pats ran the ball like14 or 15 times. Gray was the clear #2 over bolden. The. This news comes out. What more do you need to keep him on your bench as a flier for the coming weeks? These happen in part because people are so desperate for the next big thing that it seems they create threads for hype so others around the fantasy world have something to get excited about. Coach Bill Belichick said the Patriots will "keep going with" Jonas Gray and see how he seizes the opportunity.
Gray is officially ahead of Brandon Bolden on the depth chart, as if Thursday night's usage didn't confirm it. It didn't mean a whole lot, as Gray saw just two touches compared to one for Bolden. But we'd expect Gray's role to grow as the "big back" complement to Shane Vereen, who handled 17 touches against the Jets. Gray may never be fantasy-useful, but he could see 8-10 weekly carries.
Not buying it, wxpect Boldin for 30 carries next week and Vereen to touch it 5 times and White to be active over Gray. Seems to be the mantra for the Patriots.
This. Jets are good against the run, suck against the pass. The Pats frequently implement fairly extreme game plans. It's a short week. Gray had zero game experience and no time to prepare for this one. And he still ran ahead of Bolden. It's classic NE game script stuff though - on a short week at that - I think it's inconclusive longer term.
Definitely worth a one-week hold to see how much rope Belichick is going to give him.Worth grabbing in a redraft or keeper at this point? He's most likely flying under the radar this week.

Jonas Gray is playing the role of Matt Forte this week in practice. #Patriots
Is Gray a proficient pass catcher? That's an odd role comparison to me at least.Christopher Price , WEEI.com, Patriots Beat Writer

It means he's on the scout team. Not sure how it's a good sign that he's playing for the "Bears" and not the Pats in practice...isn't that the everydown back role? sounds like a good signChristopher Price , WEEI.com, Patriots Beat Writer

just snagged him last night but don't like hearing that. Sounds like he's role playing for the defense as opposed to carrying the ball on the offensive side of the field. Was hoping he would slide into the Ridley role.Christopher Price , WEEI.com, Patriots Beat Writer

It's not bad. What it says to me is that Belichick sees Gray as a guy that's capable of doing the things Forte can do, which is clearly a good thing. I don't think in any way it's indicative of how many carries/rec Gray will get vs the Bears (good or bad) but it's certainly indicative of his well rounded skill set. Obviously it's still a situation that needs time to play out, but based on the way things seem to be unfolding and various things I've read, I get the impression that the coaching staff thinks highly of Gray's skill set, attitude, and work ethic. Seems to have a legit shot at taking Ridley's role and even adding some receiving versatility to it, allowing Vereen to return to his specialist role as mainly a receiver, avoid the pounding, and stay healthy. After what happened with Blount last year, hard not be a little excited about Gray's potential in this scenario.Maybe I'm not understating. When the 1st team offense is on the field practicing, who are they practicing against? The first team defense, rt?
So how is this bad??
Agreed. Gray could be nothing more than a solid practice squad guy who got a few carries due to circumstances. He could also turn into the Pats #1 RB including goal line work, be one of the best pick ups of the year, and go into 2015 as their starting RB. Roster him for a week or two, painless to drop if he doesn't pan out.Seems like a lot of folks are trying to interpret Belichick's moves. Have we learned nothing over the years?
Let it play out on Sunday (and beyond) and let's re-evaluate.
Nice find. Thank you.@erav31: @cpriceNFL if Jonas gray playing role of forte does that mean he's not involved in offensive gameplan this week?
@cpriceNFL: @erav31 No, that's in addition to his regular workload. Standard operating procedure for a lot of guys--scout team duty.
Nice find indeed. I specifically remember Edelman playing some sort of mobile QB on the scout team last season as well. Doesn't mean their role is getting decreased in the game plan or anything like that.Nice find. I was surprised that he went untouched in all of my ffpc leagues where the benches go 10 deep. Seems like there could be some value this year although it will obviously ebb and flow according to game flow much like Ridley's. Still seems odd that Bolden was rostered everywhere with this guy just chillin on the WW.ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss confirms Jonas Gray now projects as the Patriots top "big back."
Gray is ahead of both Brandon Bolden and James White. The 2012 UDFA out of Notre Dame was expected to have a bigger role than the three carries he got in Week 7, but the Patriots got absolutely dominated in time of possession and didn't want to challenge the Jets' elite run defense. In different game-flow situations, Gray could have a real role. He's worth adding in deeper formats.
People probably shied away from Gray since Bolden has the name recognition. Belichick has his gamesmanship, but once he finds his guy like Ridley, he has stuck with him as long as he doesn't put the ball on the ground. Who knows if that will be any of the guys, but Gray is worth a pre-emptive pickup IMO.
