More song ranking: Fine organic from Phish (1 Viewer)

I intended to wait until the end of Shuke's thousand plus countdown, but with Phish's summer tour kicking off in St Louis this week, the time felt right: Phish wrote and play an inordinate number of songs that refer to organic things (not counting people) either in their song titles or lyrics. I count 55 and, duh, have ranked them from worst to first. If you want an introduction to the band, this could be one way although the first (last) dozen or so songs aren't very good. But someone's got to hold down the left side of the bell curve. I'll post five at a time to keep this thread mercifully short. Enjoy the summer tour, everyone.

Fish Bass (55): Instrumental sound collage of bassy effects on the little known Siket Disc. No melodic structure or anything to really hang your hat on. More like a doodle than any real piece of art.     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEs80J0_Uj4

NO2 (54): Seven minutes of “music” that makes you feel like you’re in the dentist’s chair having some serious work done. This would be dead-last on the list save for some live versions which make the effect much more palatable, even musical:

The original if you can stomach it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJuz7UcH_Tc

An example of dropping this in the middle of a jam, to good effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XvndTknkP0

Snow (53): Only played once, during the Wingsuit set on 2013 Halloween. Abandoned for the album as the song falls flat due to its annoyingly high register that seems beyond the vocal range of Mike, who tried his best.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdkisTu4SqA

Insects (52):  The repetitive but inconsistent drumming and guitar riff evoke the pulsing beats of the night sky with its variety of insects. Listenable and not wholly uninteresting like much of the Siket Disc but not the best use of my last three minutes of life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz0WA18IprQ

Stray Dog (51): No matter how cool of a sound Page can coax from his white Kasvot Vaxt organ, it’s just not enough to save this throw-away of a song from the epic Halloween set last year. The tune, the typical Trey guitar solo—this is trite Phish at its best (or worst).  Kasvot Vaxt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1_6Aoba20I

Nice.

Although with this start (NO2, insects)  you're not going to be getting any new fans.

:blackdot:   I'm having a hard time keeping up with the music countdowns but will check in on this one when I can and promise to listen to every song!

Nice.

Although with this start (NO2, insects)  you're not going to be getting any new fans.
I relistened to the bonus NO2 link yesterday which is from a 2015 show that I caught. Since it’s mostly Tweezer, that was the best offering from the bottom five.

Already some nice tunes, even though these are bottom ten. The Horse, in particular, is a beautiful song, and Cool Amber and Mercury is a fun one. As promised, Fikus, too. Ugh.

Fikus (50): More high-pitched, almost falsetto, singing/talking from Mike, anchored with an interesting bass line and rhythms which salvage the song enough to warrant its inclusion on the Story of the Ghost album. Studio Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJbb8GKIqUI  Live version: none worth sharing

Shade (49): I don’t know, there is something about the line “I only like the shade when you’re blocking the light” that grates on me. Sounds corny, stupid and childish all at once. It’s a pretty tune that doesn’t bring much beyond the melody. Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkR0SdEiBfw

Dogs Stole Things (48): Nice little rocker with a stupid title. The band doesn’t generally take this for more than a light spin. A solid filler for set one, not much more. Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OiYWj8Z9b4

The Horse (47): Maybe it shouldn’t be this highly ranked but this little tune is the epitome of pretty and it also inevitably launches into Silent in the Morning which is such a welcome live song. Hung like a…

Studio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlitH8iEqv8    Live version (with its big brother Silent in the Morning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnBsZSy-fc4

Cool Amber and Mercury (46): “Faceplant into Rock”—you can’t go wrong with a line like that. “Album” version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdwCblgzap8

I thought you meant this metaphorically, but no it really is the dentist's chair!   :lmao:   I wasn't able to make it through this one.  I know you said these were the worst of the worst, so I'm looking forward to the progression.  I actually didn't mind "Insects."

All of the lyrics of this one were insipid.

Agree with you about "The Horse" - very pretty.

I liked that bonus track. It was a good transition. I prefer live performances as well.

And, I did like the original - but I honestly did not listen to it all the way through. I get it tho.

I have always liked what I have heard of Phish, but I have never dug deep into their work.

I will listen here. Thnx.

Most notable in the next five is Lawnboy which sort of doesn't fit the theme of this list but sort of does. I think the lyrics merit its inclusion and certainly the 7/25/17 version is worth your attention. You be the judge:

Throughout the night
When there's no direct light
And a thin veil of clouds
Keeps the stars out of sight

I can smell the colors
Outside on my lawn
The moist green organic
That my feet tread upon

And the black oleander
Surrounded by blues
I'm soon overwhelmed
By olfactory hues

Mountains in the Mist (45): A beautiful guitar riff, some lovely vocals and harmonies. A great tune but too mellow to be higher on this list. Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf7yps_toxA  Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3cMSGxt66c

Water in the Sky (44): Fans caught the first piano tinkles of Water in the Sky back in 1997 when it was played as a slow, laid back country tune. The band retooled it for The Story of the Ghost album, giving it more danceability and liveliness. This would be a bottom-ten song in its original version but the double-time album version kicks it up a few notches.  Album version (fast): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PaFTv76QXM  First draft, live from 1997: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voEjd9HTC-I

Leaves (43): Only three live versions to draw from and only one that can be found on Youtube. This ballad features some interesting harmonies and requisite power chords. If it finds its way onto an album and into the live rotation, I could see this song blossoming but until then, it is a pedestrian tune.  Live from 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV05Ap3BtZs

Lawn Boy (42): This is the one song that was added to this list despite the title alluding to a person. In reality, the lyrics are more “nature-centered” than human-centered so I included it. For some reason, the phrase “olfactory hues” elicits such a clear vision (smell?) of nature to me that it felt wrong to leave it off this list. Also, and no less importantly, I’d be remiss not to include one of the all-time great jams which happened in 2017 when the band decided to stretch out this typically sub-3-minute tune into a tour de force which won “jam of the year” and is worthy of repeated listens. Yes, it is always schmaltzy when played live, but no, it’s never been done quite like 7/25/17, keytar and all.  Album version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4BwDl9_t98    Phat 30-minute summer 2017 version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILK-02_1i40&t=19s

Ocelot (41): Straightforward song that walks along like the titular kitty cat. Nothing too stellar here but a solid tune that has been taken for an extended outing fairly often in recent years.  Studio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcs1xm6ufyo   Live in 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcCioXdbzxM

In the 40 - 36 range, we get songs dating from the very early days of the band (Dog Log, No Dogs Allowed and Cavern), some of their newest material with Turtle in the Clouds, and one tweener with Waves from the early aughts. No big jams, nothing altogether stellar here, although No Dogs Allowed spawned Divided Sky which (spoiler alert) could be an upper echelon organic Phish song.

Turtle in the Clouds (40): 80s-cool synth with a catchy melody. The lyrics, translated from English into Swedish then back into English again, are obscure enough and quirky enough to really work. “Album” version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6QqMRHJdVg   Live version with dancing—try these steps at home!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AHpWwgpKPA

Dog Log (39): Stinky subject matter but a cheery, bouncy tune. This one has been extended considerably in the live setting. Love the rhythms just before the last verse.  Studio version (aka Dog Gone Dog): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf6JE4Xf040   Monster soundcheck version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DPs2NTUNkY

No Dogs Allowed (38): Not sure how to rank this. On one hand, we have a 7-minute ending which became Divided Sky, one of the greatest melodies that you’ve never heard. But the rest of the song is a kitchy, novelty tune with silly lyrics. Guess the halfway mark seems about right.   Live from 1988: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBegBEbu32E

Cavern (37): I could see this ranking causing angst to Phish fans who feel this is a top-notch, old-school bopping tune. I just don’t like it much, myself, not sure if it is overplayed or that the silly lyrics have not aged well. You decide.  Studio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsHgcXXCmE0   Live version (with the funk): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4piMRBu-N5   Live version, straight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1fh-IiNiC8

Waves (36): A longer song that is not an epic but more of a stretched out melody with some nice lyrical imagery. Live versions don’t tend to do much out of the box, but the tune and lyrics carry this solid effort.   Studio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcmEMuryEc4

I've seriously never heard No Dogs Allowed before.  Sounds like Esther>Divided Sky.

Waves is underappreciated.

Synesthesia is cool.

Music is great so far.

What did you think about the epic Lawnboy? I relisten to it just about every couple of weeks and the peak still gives me goosebumps.
I have only watched the Live version listed at the bottom:

Lawn Boy (42): This is the one song that was added to this list despite the title alluding to a person. In reality, the lyrics are more “nature-centered” than human-centered so I included it. It rocks. As I said earlier, I much prefer live versions, and this one was no disappointment.

I really agree with your assessment in regards to "nature".

As stated before, synesthesia is cool. I experience a type of it normally - have my whole life - so, this really touches me. I've never smelled colors, but I feel things as colors often - most of the time, actually.

The music is a perfect accompaniment to the concept. It has a cycle of tension and release which is really important for lives jams, imo. I even dig the keytar. The light effects compliment it all perfectly as well. The guitar part is my fav (usually is if their is no violin/fiddle), and it has a "bright" quality to it that stands out as it weaves in and out with the keyboards.

The rhythm section does its job and holds it all together - which can be tricky in longer and freer jams.

I need to see this band live sometime.

Still in the bottom half of the list, but finding some gems nonetheless. In fact, aside from Mango (which I somewhat irrationally don't care for), I love hearing all of these tunes in concert. Suppose I prefer the studio version of "Dirt" because it is too pretty for the live treatment.

Mango Song (35): Not one of my favorite live songs. Frankly, I’m digging the studio version with its intricate harmonies, but still not enough to rank it in the top half. The ending is stupid.  Studio Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es_t8J6rkPU   Big, live, sloppy version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWckVld5d30

Your Pet Cat (34): Another Halloween song. Love those “walking down” riffs from Trey and the screeching cat sounds don’t hinder the enjoyment of this funky ditty about kitty. Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8On7LfrX2s

Thunderhead (33): I like this song more than I should based solely on having such a cool name. Also love the rumbling drums at the singing of “Thunderhead.” Beautiful piano lines and guitar solo. Very “nature-y” lyrics too.  Studio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFlAjNlGA2Q Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS5haYSl2v0

Vultures (32): From the opening piano arpeggios to the heavy beats in the chorus, this song keeps the listener interested throughout its typically 7-minute run. Not sure why it was never recorded as this song seems like a natural for The Story of the Ghost album. Must have just missed the cut.  Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN-38deRHvw

Dirt (31): Continuing the run of one-word song titles (more to come), I could easily see Dirt ranked higher as it is a fan favorite of a ballad. Some lovely lyrics and playing with whistling to boot, I just favor heavier tunes to the ballads, myself. But this is a top-notch tune. I only see two more ballads ranked higher and they've got some power / history behind them so Dirt feels properly placed here to me.  Studio Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9kCMHNQFak  Live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qTTdtFec8o

Love Dirt.  Hate Mango.  And I despise the wooing now in Vultures.  The end of that song should be a chance for Fishman to show his skills, but it's just stupid now.

This one sounds to me like what I've always thought Phish to be, and it's simply not my jam.  I enjoyed both Dog Log and Waves, though.

This is gorgeous.  I'd love to hear it with a stronger singer in the lead (don't kill me, Phish people), but everything else was beautiful.  I'm adding this to my "under consideration" Spotify playlist.

I'm with the crowd on the "woos" on Vultures but otherwise enjoyed that one a ton, especially the piano and guitar parts.

Couldn't get past the screeches in "Your Pet Cat," but I did laugh out loud at the beginning when the lyrics said something about your pet cat being like a panther.  When we moved to Nicaragua, we took our cats with us.  Cats in Nica are skinny and scraggly and mostly homeless, while ours are shiny and muscular...OK, maybe kinda fat.  When we arrived at our house and started letting them out of the carriers, our property manager/brother's eyes got huge when he looked at our black cat, and he exclaimed, "Ohmahgah, she so beautiful, she is like panther."  So even now we still tell her "you are like panther!" whenever her confidence needs a boost.

The wooing really came to be a thing during and after the Tahoe Tweezer (2013). In the jam on that particular night, the band seemed to egg on the crowd so some fans (I’d say about 1 in 4) think they should play along and woo. In the intervening years, the woos have popped up on occasion, again with the band inviting them. I’m in the 3/4th majority who is anti-woo. But so long as the band enables them, the wooing will continue by that vocal minority. It’s actually a fairly divisive issue but I just surround myself with like-minded anti woo people to avoid that conflict.

I'm not sure if Pecorino mentioned it before, but that entire set was an interpretation of this album and used a lot of the spoken word from it.

As a side note for fans, the Phish channel has returned to Sirius...channel 29.  Apparently, they did some live simulcasts from this past weekend, but unfortunately I just discovered the the channel today.  I am not sure if they plan future live simulcasts, but this is now supposed to be a long-term channel (They ran a temporary one last year).

Trey loves this ####, and is really the one encouraging the audience.  I get the feeling that Mike and Fish don't like it.  I feel the same way about the pause in Divided Sky.

Yes, Jam On is now the Phish channel.  I'm not a Sirius subscriber, but although I love Phish I'm not sure I'd be happy about it.

I go to Jemp Radio for all my Phish radio.

I don't have a problem with it.  I will get a chance to here a lot of recordings of live shows from their history, much like what happens on the Grateful Dead channel.  If they throw in a few live simulcasts from present day as well, I'm cool with that.  I am not familiar with Jemp Radio.  What's that all about?

Explain to me what’s awesome about it?  I watched the clip.  It’s just a drawn out break in an incredible song punctuated with a bunch of screaming wooks.
