Bills fans:What happens to the Bills offseason if they do sign Mario Williams?(aka what's next)What happens if they don't sign him?
It's an all or nothing move at this point. Ballsy, but when's the last time we've seen the Bills act ballsy?1. If he signs, he could do for Buffalo what Reggie White did for GB.2. If he stays three days, is offered the largest contract ever for a defensive player, and is fawned over by the entire organization & city --- and WALKS AWAY, it will be a crushing blow that'll bury this group's (Fitz, Stevie, Williams & Dareus) chances at being a playoff contender team. They'll be re-reduced to the laughing stock of the NFl and no real FA will sign with them for years.

I realize both these statements are kinda exaggerated. They fit the atmosphere though. The thread on Two Bills Drive is now up to 150 pages. Last I saw they were discussing how Jim Kelly and Mario are both avid hunters.

I think it's pretty much a done deal that he signs there. From what I'm reading from other people with sources in other organinzations, even they think it's a done deal.

When you get a premier FA to stay in town for three days, you either:

A) Are going to lock him up to a mega deal

OR

B) Are going to look like a franchise with serious problems and egg on your face

Saw another tweet saying that Mario has apparently been inquiring about buying a house in Buffalo as well. No quite as sure about that one, but I'm hoping!

The Buffalo Bills hope they have found the next Bruce Smith.

A source told FOXSports.com that a contract with defensive end Mario Williams "will be done." Further details weren’t immediately available.

The deal ends a two-day courtship of Williams that included a trip to Buffalo by his fiancé. Having failed to reach the playoffs since the 1999 season, the Bills made Williams the focus of their free-agent push after re-signing wide receiver Stevie Johnson to a multiyear contract extension on Monday.

Williams is Buffalo’s most dynamic defensive roster acquisition since Smith, the Hall of Fame defensive end who spent the first 15 years of his NFL career (1985 to 1999) with the Bills. Williams also was considered the top defensive player on this year’s free-agent market. The Texans didn’t have enough money under the salary cap to re-sign him to a contract extension.

Williams, 27, was the top pick in the 2006 NFL Draft following his junior season at North Carolina State. He signed a six-year, $54 million-deal and was selected ahead of hyped stars such as Reggie Bush and Vince Young.

WHAT'S SHAKING?

NFL Draft is a few weeks away, and we have you covered. Full coverage

Williams started slow during his rookie season, compiling 47 tackles and 4.5 sacks. However, he improved greatly in his second season by racking up 14 sacks along with 59 total tackles.

Williams came into his own in his third season. He lived up to his No. 1 pick reputation and was a first-team All-Pro selection as the anchor of a steadily improving Texans defense. In 2008, he was a first-team All-Pro again and earned the first of back-to-back Pro Bowl selections.

Under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, the Texans converted Williams into a hybrid end/outside linebacker for the 2011 season. Williams had five sacks in Houston’s first five games before missing the rest of the year with a torn pectoral muscle.

Williams will now be paired with defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, who had a solid rookie season as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, in Buffalo’s front four.

At this point, if he doesn't sign with Buffalo, they might as well just move the team to LA or Toronto because it would absolutely murder the fanbase. It would be a gut punch almost on the level of Wide Right.

So the Jets signed Sanchez to an extension, the Dolphins look like they'll end up with Matt Flynn at best at QB and just traded away their only real offensive threat, and the Pats haven't really done a whole lot. I like this offseason so far.

I would think OT or WR in the first round for the Bills now for sure. Michael Floyd would be pretty sweet IMO. If they're going OT, I'd like to seem them trade down a few spots of possible and grab the kid from Stanford.

WR in the draft.
Yeah, Floyd in the first or, gulp, Hill in the 2nd would be fine by me.I really do think that they should make an effort to re-sign Demetrius Bell. I know he has had injury problems, but ehh healthy he's been pretty good at LT the last 2 years. Must be more to that one somewhere. Maybe just was a guy that felt entitled and didn't buy into the culture they're creating there.

I think I would still like to see them pick up or draft a guard. I don't have that much faith in Urbik or Rinehart. Even if they go after a center and move Wood back over to guard. I doubt this happens, but I would even like to see what Jasper can do at guard next year. The guy is a physical freak. Just hope we can teach him how to play football.

And just curious what you guys think, but what number is Mario gonna wear? Have they decided that yet? His jerseys are gonna fly off the shelves here.

Bills signed DE Mark Anderson to a 4-year deal.

Mario Williams, Marcel Dareus, Kyle Williams, Mark Anderson. Good luck blocking that line.

So now the Bills have inked DE Mark Anderson to a 4 year deal. That gives them 2 of the top 3 DEs in free agency. The guy was one of the only guys in New England last year that consistently put pressure on the QB and had 10 sacks.

This d-line has the potential to be extremely dominant.

So at this point I'd still like to see them go with either Michael Floyd or that LT from Stanford in the 1st round. Then either OLB or CB in the 2nd.

Personally, I'd still like to see them re-sign D. Bell, but that's looking less and less likely all the time. Although the interest for him doesn't seem nearly as big as I thought it would be either. I seem to recall some talk about him being a bit soft when dealing with injuries, so maybe that and his asking price have turned the Bills off of him.

:goodposting: curious to hear what kind of dollars they gave to Anderson. he's good but has been very inconsistent. I do like the idea of using Kelsay on run downs and then bringing in Anderson as a pass rush specialist. Might be time to eat the cost and part ways with Merriman.
The Bills have signed free agent defensive end Mark Anderson, the team announced today. Anderson signed a four-year deal, worth $27.5 million, including $8 million guaranteed according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The team will hold a news conference at 3:15 p.m. to announce the signing.Anderson had 10 sacks last season for the New England Patriots and would give the Bills a edge-rush option with solid credentials opposite newly acquired Mario Williams. FoxSports also has reported a deal is close.

Hey Bills fans, any idea why the FBG depth charts (updated very recently) have Donald Jones as the WR2 starter over David Nelson?

Haven't been able to find anything on the web or forums about this, so curious if there's any information out there.

Nelson plays the slot. That position is his. Jones on the other hand plays the "#2" role but I think he gets replaced. He's nothing special. I think Easly or someone in the draft takes that spot eventually. I have hopes that the Bills take Floyd with the 10th pick.

The Bills use 3 WRs in their base formation. Nelson typically lines up in the slot. So, when they do use a 2WR formation, Jones (or someone else) would normally be on the field over Nelson. As mentioned, the Bills want to upgrade that #2 WR spot and will likely bring in a speed WR with some size in one of the first few rounds of the draft.

any thought as to Easley? is there any reason to hold onto him in dynasty formats, even as a flyer? have they given up on him?

not sure. have to be worried about a player who can't stay healthy and has already missed two full seasons now.he looked pretty good in camp last year and I think there is still some hope. he definitely looks like a prototypical starting WR. very big and physical player. I'm not sure if he has the speed they are looking for, but I'm thinking anything they can get from him would be considered a bonus at this point.

Ran a 4.4 at the combine and the word here in Buffalo was that before the heart ailment he was faster than he ever was. Stevie talked all the time about how impressive and how much of a beast Easley was before he got sick. Not sure if he lost anything from last year, but I'm kinda hopeful he can finally put it all together this year.

I guess looks are deceiving because he didn't look that fast to me in the times I've seen him play.I see his listed combine time as a 4.46 which is pretty amazing given how big and strong he is. If he still has that kind of speed, he definitely could be the type of player they are looking for.

Team draft needs: Buffalo Bills

By Clark Judge | CBSSports.com National NFL Insider

It's been awhile since anyone took Buffalo seriously, but I guarantee that changes this year.

First of all, the Bills come off a season where they were 5-2 before injuries that claimed seven starters finished them. Second, they signed the league's most attractive free agent in Mario Williams, meaning that pass rush that stunk last year is vastly improved. Third, all those guys they lost to injuries in 2011? They're back.

The question, of course, is: Will Buffalo be, too? The Bills jumped to a terrific start before pulling El foldo, losing eight of their last nine. It's hard to know which are the real Bills, but it's not hard to imagine these guys pushing the New York Jets for second in the AFC East now.

They have a new defensive coordinator in Dave Wannstedt, with a new 4-3 alignment. They have Mario Williams, too. And Mark Anderson, Marcell Dareus, Nick Barnett and a belief that they can and will close the gap between them and New England.

QB: The Bills believe so strongly in Ryan Fitzpatrick that they signed him to a long-term deal in the middle of last season. That's when things were going right. Then the roof collapsed, and Fitzpatrick was one of those caught under it -- with four more interceptions (13) the second half of the season than touchdowns (9). The Bills insist they can win with Fitzpatrick, but seeing is believing. For most of his career he's been a backup, and when he started he hasn't produced a winning record. Granted, he was on some bad clubs, but, still, a win is a win is a win. He might not have anything to prove to the Bills' hierarchy, but he will to skeptical fans. If there's a need, it's only for a backup they may find in the later rounds. Otherwise, coach Chan Gailey trusts Tyler Thigpen.

RB: Fitzpatrick isn't the heart and soul of this offense; Fred Jackson is. And when Buffalo lost him last season it lost what little chance it had of making the playoffs. Jackson is one of the game's top all-around players -- someone who can run, who can catch and who excels on special teams. In cold-weather climates like Buffalo, you must be able to run ... and Buffalo could when Jackson was in the lineup. He produced 934 yards rushing, averaged 5.5 per carry, had six 100-yard games and was on schedule to reach 1,494 before he was hurt. That's when C.J. Spiller stepped in, and if there's something to be gained from the Jackson injury it's that Buffalo discovered what it should have known all along -- namely, that Spiller should be touching the football more. He and Jackson together produced nearly 1,500 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Tashard Choice is the third option in a backfield that includes fullback Cory McIntyre, thee special-teams captain who's an ace tackler and a tough blocker.

WR: Re-signing Stevie Johnson was a huge step toward keeping the Bills' offense intact. Not only is he the club's leading receiver, he's one of the few guys anywhere who figured out how to solve Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis. I'm serious. Of course, Johnson had his share of drops and stupid penalties, too, but the guy is a legitimate big-play threat, and his new contract reflects how important he is to the Bills' offense. Slot receiver David Nelson had a breakout year with 61 catches and five touchdowns, but he's not a true No. 2. Look at his production the second half of the season, and, like the Bills, it declined dramatically. Buffalo could use more depth at this position, though it hopes Marcus Easley -- who battled medical issues the past two seasons -- could be a factor. Brad Smith and Donald Jones fill out the roster, but Smith is more a special-teams star and jack-of-all-trades than a legitimate receiver. Without a true speed receiver, Buffalo often found opponents double-covering Johnson -- limiting his downfield effectiveness. A deep threat is needed here and probably early in the draft.

TE: This has been a revolving door since Jay Riemersma departed, and maybe, just maybe, Scott Chandler is the answer. He was one of the team's pleasant surprises, with 38 catches and six touchdowns, but he faded down the stretch. Of course, so did the rest of the team. Chandler's size (he's 6-foot-7, 270 pounds) makes him a red zone threat and re-signing him was wise. Lee Smith and Kevin Brock are the understudies at a position where Buffalo can always use help.

OL: For the second time in three years the Bills lost their starting left tackle to Philadelphia. Only this time, Buffalo had a chance to keep Demetrees Bell and passed. The reason: He was a risk, missing major parts of two of the past three seasons with injuries. So the question becomes: Who replaces him? That's why we have the draft, people. For the moment, Chris Hairston is the starter, mostly because he played there last season when Bell did not, but stay tuned. Hairston is a straight-ahead masher, more suited to right tackle or swing tackle. Left guard Andy Levitre is one of the league's most underrated players, while right tackle Erik Peters and center Eric Wood are solid. Look for Kraig Urbik to start at center and guard, with Chad Rinehart ideal as an interior sub. Once upon a time this was an area of need, but the Bills quietly built this unit into one of the league's best offensive lines. Buffalo last year led the league in fewest sacks allowed with 23 and its average of 4.9 yards per carry the Bills' best since 1975 when O.J. Simpson was in the lineup.

DL: With the additions of Mario Williams and Mark Anderson, the Bills' 4-3 defense looks formidable. Williams is one of the best pass rushers anywhere, and he's come to the right spot at just the right time. Buffalo last season had just 29 sacks, with defensive tackle Marcell Darius leading the team with 5.5. Williams and Anderson, meanwhile, combined for 15, and that's with Williams missing all but five starts with a torn pectoral. He's OK, and the Bills should be much better than that with defensive tackle Kyle Williams back and positioned in a 4-3 setup that seems more to his liking. That's good because if you're going to beat New England, you better squeeze Tom Brady with a pass rush -- and now Buffalo can. Chris Kelsay, Alex Carrington and Dwan Edwards are in the mix, with Torrell Troup and Spencer Johnson suitable backups at tackle. Plus, there's standup end Shawne Merriman, and anything Buffalo gains from him is a bonus. Bottom line: The Bills suddenly are talented and deep at a position where they had been vulnerable.

LB: Nick Barnett was this unit's best player. In fact, he might have been Buffalo's best defensive player, period. All he did was produce a team-high 130 stops, with three sacks and three interceptions -- one of which he returned for a touchdown. Rookie Kelvin Sheppard was impressive and, with Barnett, comprises a strong 1-2 punch at a key position. The Bills solidified the unit with the re-signing of Kirk Morrison at outside linebacker, and, while he served as a backup last season, he almost surely competes for a strong-side starting job. Chris White backs up Sheppard at the middle linebacker spot, and Arthur Moats -- a bit of a tweener -- is a possibility as the backup at SAM. Moving Chris Kelsey from linebacker to defensive end makes a lot more sense. He never seemed comfortable on the outside. But depth is a concern here.

DB: Despite opponents shredding Buffalo for 3,714 yards passing and 30 TDs, the secondary is not a major concern. The pass rush? That's another story. But that's why Buffalo signed free-agents Mario Williams and Mark Anderson. There are four quality veterans here in Jairus Byrd, Terrence McGee, Drayton Florence and George Wilson, and there is talent in Leodis McKelvin, Aaron Williams and Bryan Scott. Williams, a rookie last season, looked good when he stepped in for the injured McGee and McKelvin and should start, while Wilson had his best season ever with 106 tackles and a team-high four interceptions. McGee has been one of Buffalo's best and most consistent players in the past decade, but he can't seem to shake recurring injuries, missing 22 of Buffalo's last 48 games. Nevertheless, the Bills are deep at a position where you better be deep if you're serious about closing the gap with New England. Nevertheless, GM Buddy Nix has said he'll take a cornerback in the draft, and look for one to go somewhere in the middle rounds.

AFC East draft needs

Buffalo Bills Excerpt:

Overview: The Bills enter April’s draft in much better shape after making the biggest move of free agency in acquiring DE Mario Williams, the best pass rusher on the market, who fills Buffalo’s biggest need. By adding DE Mark Anderson as well, the need for edge rushers suddenly goes way down the Bills’ priority list. Buffalo has 10 picks in the draft and plenty of opportunities to upgrade its personnel. With a 5-2 start to the 2011 season, the Bills showed promise and brought hope to a starved fan base. GM Buddy Nix has mentioned that, in recent years, the team needed to simply add more players, but it is at a point now where it can add more depth and fill specific needs.

Need No. 1: Offensive tackle

The Bills have yet to re-sign OLT Demetrius Bell and may not be able to. Chris Hairston showed plenty of growing pains as a rookie. The Clemson product could be better-suited as a right tackle down the line. Nix has often discussed never having enough tackles, and the lack of depth showed last season when Bell and Hairston suffered injuries. Erik Pears played well on the right side and got a contract extension, but Ryan Fitzpatrick needs a legitimate blind-side tackle. Even if the Bills can re-sign Bell, the franchise clearly doesn’t think he is the long-term answer. Riley Reiff out of Iowa is a distinct possibility at No. 10.

Need No. 2: Wide receiver

It was crucial for the Bills to re-sign WR Stevie Johnson, Fitzpatrick’s No. 1 receiver, but last year proved the team needs more weapons on offense. When Johnson wasn’t 100 percent or was covered, Fitzpatrick didn’t have enough receivers to get open. David Nelson had some moments in the slot, and the team is high on Donald Jones and Marcus Easley, but this draft has a deep receiving class, and the Bills haven’t found a legitimate No. 2 threat. They could use a big receiver who can get open on the outside.

Need No. 3: Cornerback

The pass defense took a big step backward last season. Part of that was because of the poor pass rush, but the Bills’ corners were a big part of the problem. Terrence McGee and Aaron Williams battled injuries, Leodis McKelvin was relegated to special teams by the end of the season and Drayton Florence had his struggles. Williams showed lots of promise, but the Bills need help on the outside and more overall depth at the position. There are a lot of corners with second- to third-round grades in the draft that the Bills could consider. Buffalo is fortunate enough to have the division’s best pair at safety, but a playmaking corner should be a priority.

Really? Not one Sunday night or Monday game? We just had one of the bigger off seasons in the league and signed the top free agent available. I thought for sure that would've got us a Primetime game.

Week 01 @ New York Jets

Week 02 Kansas City Chiefs

Week 03 @ Cleveland Browns

Week 04 New England Patriots

Week 05 @ San Francisco 49ers

Week 06 @ Arizona Cardinals

Week 07 Tennessee Titans

Week 08 Bye

Week 09 @ Houston Texans

Week 10 @ New England Patriots

Week 11 Miami Dolphins

Week 12 @ Indianapolis Colts

Week 13 Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 14 St. Louis Rams

Week 15 Seattle Seahawks

Week 16 @ Miami Dolphins

Week 17 New York Jets

We have a nice 2nd half after the Patriots. I could see us getting a late run to the playoffs depending on how we start. Playing the Jets week 1 might not be bad. That team might still be a mess by the time week 1 comes around. Who know what kind of team they will be though. I bet completely different by week 17.

If we can win 3 of the first 5 games then I think we might be looking at the playoffs. As of right now I see 10 or 11 wins this year.

7 of the first 11 away. That will be rough. Agreed that the end of the year schedule will be much easier and setup a possible playoff run. Lots of easier teams presumably and a lot of them at home. And yeah, of course they got screwed with no MNF or SNF games. It's especially astounding since their primetime games have been great when they actually get them and they were part of some of the most exciting games all last year.

So not only did the league schedule the Bills to play NE after NE's bye in New England (again), but the Bills play away at SF and then away at ARI in consecutive weeks. Meaning they'll probably have to find someplace out West to stay and practice for the week. Lame.

Dream Scenario: Bills and Eagles swap first round picks for Asante Samuel.

I know it won't happen, but I think the Bills would be just fine with moving down and Samuel is still an awesome CB. Te Eagles are making a mistake in trading him IMO.

He's good but I can't stand him or his attitude. I just don't think he would mesh well with what the Bills are trying to do. Of course the guy can play CB. But I worry he would effect our locker room too much. But if we do trade down to say the Eagles pick, I would hope we somehow still get Floyd. I think he will make a bigger impact for our team than any other 1st rounder that is possible for us to grab.

I don't think the Bills are taking Floyd. They ddn't bring him in for a visit and brought both Dareus and Spiller in the last two years. I don't think they like his attitude. Which could also come into play with Samuel. Although I don't really think Samuel is a problem. The guy was a total professional last year for the Eagles despite the constant rumors swirling about them wanting to trade him.

Dream Scenario: Bills and Eagles swap first round picks for Asante Samuel.I know it won't happen, but I think the Bills would be just fine with moving down and Samuel is still an awesome CB.

Did he behave last year? Maybe he finally grew up. But you're right now that I think about it. The Bills and Nix don't draft players in the first unless they bring him in. I just really like Floyd and I don't see another position that can fix major problems like he can. Floyd would be our #2 and eventually #1 WR.Who have we brought in that could be the guy? Here is a list of all the guys we brought in. Notice the absense of Floyd and Reiff.Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M - will be goneBrock Osweiler, QB, Arizona StateKirk Cousins, QB, Michigan StateRussell Wilson, QB, WisconsinTrent Richardson, RB, Alabama - Why even bring him in? Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State - Will be gone but would gladly take him.Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian StateMatt Kalil, OL, USC - Man, if he fell it would be a no brainer. Maybe a trade up but doubt it.Jonathan Martin, OL, Stanford - Reach in my opinion.Mike Adams, OL, Ohio State - Another reach (just my opinion)Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia - reachJames Brown, OL, TroyFletcher Cox, DL, Mississippi State - Do we need another DT?Melvin Ingram, DL, South Carolina - Maybe? But why after getting Williams and Anderson?Chandler Jones, DL, Syracuse - Reach. Maybe 2nd if he fell. Shea McClellin, DL, Boise State - Same as above. Whitney Mercilus, DL, Illinois - Same as above.Vinny Curry, DL, MarshallOlivier Vernon, DL, Miami (FL)Bruce Irvin, DL, West VirginiaLuke Kuechly, LB, Boston College - I think he would upgrade our LB core in an instant but don't we have bigger needs? Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama - Same as above kinda.Tank Carder, LB, TCUMorris Claiborne, DB, LSU - No brainer if he fell. Stephon Gilmore, DB, South Carolina - Maybe? I could see us possibly reaching a little for him.Dre Kirkpatrick, DB, Alabama - I'm not sold. I think he is a reach plus has issues.Mark Barron, DB, Alabama - We don't really need a S.Josh Robinson, DB, Central FloridaJamell Fleming, DB, OklahomaDe'Quan Menzie, DB, AlabamaAll the other guys were brought in for 2nd or later so I didn't comment.
