Question for Dentist (1 Viewer)

I've been having a tooth pain for the last year or so.  The first time I remember it being painful was when I bit a piece of undercooked rice and a got very sharp and strong pain.  It went away quickly (under a few minutes or so).  Up until a week ago, the pain was tolerable--sometimes sensitive to temperature or hard food but more the exception than the rule.  In the last week, there's been almost a constant dull pain in the area and it's been much more sensitive to cold/hot water etc.

I went to the dentist yesterday and he was a little baffled.  X-rays showed no infection or cavity.  He asked if I was sick as sometime a sinus infection can cause a reaction but I'm not sick.  He tapped the area with his instruments but no pain.  He then cooled an instrument and touched my tooth and it was very painful.  An adjacent tooth was also sensitive to the cold but not nearly as much as the first one.

He said there's evidence I grind my teeth in my sleep and wants to fit me for an appliance for when I sleep.  Anything else I should be looking at?

You should not have mocked that Voodoo woman.  She is just starting out with the mouth on her Chet doll, but plans on moving to the genitals soon.

Cracked tooth? If it has been filled in the past, the tooth could be cracked on the inside and x-rays won't spot it. Just speaking from experience. I'm certainly no dentist.

My Dentist wants $500 for a new whitening tray and all the treatments.  That seems steep.  Should I just go to Tijuana and have this done?

Also, I wear an expensive mouth guard now due to teeth grinding.  However my wife says she has never heard or seen me grind my teeth at night.  Did I get taken?

Had a similar experience.  Eventually referred me to an endodontist.  By then the pain was stronger and not localized so it took a lot of effort to be sure the location but a few racks later after root canal and cap all pain was gone.

Went to an emergency dentist today and had a root canal.  Pain was almost unbearable earlier today.  He didn't see anything but thought it was probably a hairline fracture.

Virgin tooth.  No fillings or cavities.  EVA

no, but i'm in the midwest where my fees are among the lowest in the country, so I'm $360.. and because demand spiked 10 years ago, we haven't ever raised the price in the entire time i've worked here.

no.

don't forget to get the crown

don't forget to get the crown
I just had a temporary crown done last week and am scheduled to go in next week to cement the permanent crown.  In the past it is very uncomfortable for them to cement the permanent crown.  Do you normally numb the area before attaching the permanent crown?

Only if you're a girley man!

just ask to be numbed.

I numb about 38.5% of the time for final crown cementation.

For what you charge for the ####### crown, the ####### numbing better be free.  As should a quick handie from either you or one of your staff.
yes, it's free.

I think if people knew what all the materials cost, what the lab fees were (assuming you are getting your work done from a higher quality guy and not someone that sends their labwork to a cheap lab) and saw the time involvement, they'd realize that crowns really weren't the cash grab they think that they are.

Certainly they are profitable,  just not nearly as much as most people think... not even close.

Just had the crown installed today.  My dentist has done ~32k root canals in his career.

I call bs. Specialist maybe.. And only if super old.

Even a dentist 40 years in, that would be nearly 800 a year, or over 3 per day assuming a normal 200 day per year schedule.

No general dentist averages 4 rct a day.

I do what's considered a lot of root canals and I doubt I do 150 this year.

He said he averages 7/day and has been practicing for over 30 years.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I would like to get the Dentist's thoughts on Walter Palmer
Bad beat if you ask me. He shoots any other lion and no one cares about it to this day.

I don't condone big game hunting, but he shouldn't have had his life ruined over it.
