Should there be a cap on NIL? (1 Viewer)

The boosters were the source of funds. They will not be. The athletic departments are in complete joy they can stop glad-handing these rich dudes that latch on to a schools football team to give themselves a sense of worth, and in many cases they run the program (see LSU as exhibit #1).

These programs are going to get their primary money from elsewhere. If Goldman Sachs gives LSU $1B of NIL funding in exchange for 5% of revenues, it's gonna be a win for both sides. Fictitious #s, but whatever works for both parties. And Goldman will be on the stadium, jerseys, and gatorade cups. And the AD can worry about only Goldman rather than Tom, **** and Harry who own car dealerships in Shreeveport and Jane, Mary, and Martha who own casinos in Baton Rouge. It's a much simpler model and let's the AD and coach focus on winning and their 100 independent contractor players rather than attending 300 booster benefit dinners.
I understand your POV, good explanation, however...you think the boosters and their money are just going to disappear?
Not all schools will have a Goldman Sachs sponsoring their football team.

I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to college sports and for that reason alone I hate it.
Why do they still call the Big 10, the Big 10? There are 14 teams in the Big 10.
Soon to be 18. Legacy of the original academic allegence.

Big 12 was already taken when they first expanded

Well, There isn't a big 14 or big 18, perhaps they should change the name. Big 10 doesn't logically apply any longer.

They'd have to re-brand everything every other season it seems. They should probably drop the number and just call it the "Big ####in Conference"

Also, just noting that the Big Ten hasn't had 10 teams since Penn State joined over 30 years ago. It was eleven schools for about 20 years until Nebraska joined. There were a few years when the Big Ten had 12 schools and the Big Twelve had 10 schools. Then Maryland and Rutgers joined a few years later. As a child of the upper Midwest and life-long Wisconsin fan, I'm still just barely getting used to Penn State being in our conference and still consider them somewhat of an interloper.

I’m basically a traditionalist, but times are changing. I don’t love this idea but it has some merit.

To be fair, Ten of the schools are “BIG”. The rest, not so much (in major sports)

First expansion was Penn state to 11. Nebraska to 12 happened significantly later.

They'd have to change it again the following year. This isn't going to stop. Schools are gonna jump to the next best thing every chance they get.

This is gonna be an everlasting fight. For private equity money. For booster/alumni money. For NIL team consortium packages. For conferences. For players. For coaches. The richest will get richer. And the lesser might not even want to compete in expensive sports like football. Their money might better be spent on academics. Which amazingly enough is what colleges are supposed to be for.

My opinion is the NCAA screwed this up as bad as something can be screwed up. If they had employed the kids many years ago and paid them even a minimum salary, this would have delayed NIL for decades. Does the NCAA even have a role long term? The conferences can make their own rules and be their own NCAA.
