TE T.J. Hockenson, MIN (1 Viewer)

T.J. Hockenson caught 2-of-4 targets for 27 yards in the Lions' Week 6 loss to the Packers.

Hockenson dropped a touchdown on one of his targets. He's had a pretty quiet four games since shredding the Cardinals in his NFL debut. Hockenson gets the Vikings in Week 7.

T.J. Hockenson caught 3-of-5 targets for 32 yards in Detroit's Week 7 loss to the Vikings.

It's become easy to attribute Hockenson's lone 100-yard performance on the year to Arizona's abysmal coverage against tight ends. The rookie hasn't topped 35 yards in any other game outside of that matchup. He remains a better player on the field for the Lions than in your lineup.

TJ still looks good out there.

On Marvin Jones' third TD, Hockenson was open and available beating a linebacker into the endzone, but Stafford had radar lock on Jones it seems.

T.J. Hockenson corralled his lone target for a 21-yard catch in the Lions' Week 8 win over the Giants.

Hockenson has cleared 30 yards once since Week 1. He's a role player in what has proven to be a surprisingly deep passing attack.

Lions Mailbag, Part 2: Breaking down T.J. Hockenson's ceiling, wild-card hopes

Excerpt:

Q: Will T.J. Hockenson eventually become as dynamic as he seems capable? Is he being used in max protect packages often? — @SteveB5477

► A: As with all rookies, but especially at the tight end position, patience must be preached. That might seem like it goes out the window when a guy has 131 yards in his debut, but it doesn't.

I have little doubt Hockenson is going to develop into a reliable receiving option at tight end. He's already showing the ability to be a matchup problem, but with Kenny Golladay, Jones and Danny Amendola, the rookie isn't in a spot where he needs to be a go-to guy every week.

The Lions don't do a lot of max protect, and when they leave a tight end in to help with pass protection, it usually isn't Hockenson. He's run nearly 170 routes, while staying in to pass block a touch more than 20 snaps.

Hockenson does help out regularly as a run blocker, and that's an area where he clearly needs to improve, both with his strength and technique. He's obviously driven to be successful in this area, and it was a big part of his resume coming into the league, but it's a skill where he's clearly struggling with the adjustment.

T.J. Hockenson caught 3-of-7 targets for 56 yards in the Lions' Week 9 loss to the Raiders.

The targets and yards were the most for Hockenson since his Week 1 explosion against the Cardinals. Hockenson has been a touchdown-or-bust TE2 ever since, and he may have a head injury after a late-game hit over the middle. If he avoided a concussion, he'll be a low-end TE2 against the Bears next week.

Lions coach Matt Patricia said T.J. Hockenson had the "wind taken out of him" in Detroit's Week 9 loss to the Raiders.

Hockenson walked off the field gingerly against the Raiders after taking a late-game hit over the middle. Patricia cleared the air, stating Detroit's rookie tight end got hit hard in the middle of the back and won't need to enter the league's concussion protocol for the second time this season. Consider Hockenson a low-end TE2 against the Bears only one week after seeing his highest target count (7) since Week 1.

Am I a fool to still think he is a better hold/emergency play than the likes of Goedert, Fant, Akins, Jarwin, Griffin, et al?

Anyone rolling with him this week that's living off waiver wire options?
Not rollin' with him, but still have him hangin' around, waiting for that 2nd half breakout....😐

Seriously, though, he's not much better than 5-6 JAGs

T.J. Hockenson corralled three passes for 47 yards on six targets Sunday in the Lions’ Week 10 loss to Chicago.

Hockenson didn't register his first catch until the fourth quarter, finally netting a 17-yard gain off a screen from Jeff Driskel with just over seven minutes remaining. He added pick-ups of 11 and 19 later in the period. Aside from his late heroics in the fourth quarter, Hockenson was mostly bottled up by Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Hockenson hasn't made an end-zone visit in five games, though perhaps a home date against Dallas in Week 11 will change his fortune.

T.J. Hockenson caught 1-of-2 targets for six yards in the Lions' Week 11 loss to the Cowboys.

Hockenson was largely a non factor for the entire afternoon. He's surpassed 40 receiving yards fewer times (2) than he's wound up in the single digits (3) since his Week 1 explosion. The Lions are set up well in Week 12 against the Redskins, but there's a low weekly floor here for Hockenson as long as he's the passing game's undisputed No. 4 pass-game option behind Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola.

Yeah, see ya next year kid, probably not on any of my teams.  I know TE's need development time, but he clearly has the receiving talent but they never throw him the ball!!!  He is on the field for a high % of snaps, so that's not it.  Frustrating waste of talent, Patricia.

Its ebron all over again, waste a high pick on a talented TE only to not utilize his ability
Yeah, since they don't really use him we'd be in much better shape if they went with Bush and Greedy instead.

I've had enough of the Pats North experiment, these 2 have got to go but pretty sure we're stuck with them another year

T.J. Hockenson (shoulder) was downgraded to questionable for Week 12 against the Redskins.

It's pretty rare to be added to the injury report this late into the week, so Hockenson's pre-game warmups are definitely worth monitoring tomorrow morning. Hockenson has been a low-volume TE2 in fantasy since a huge NFL debut against the Cardinals in Week 1. With Matthew Stafford out indefinitely, there are better streaming options than Hockenson, especially if he's playing through an injury.

T.J. Hockenson was spotted using crutches following Detroit's Week 13 loss to the Bears.

He later traded in his crutches for a walking boot and scooter. Hockenson hasn't exceeded 56 yards in any outing since Week 1 as Detroit's continued using both Logan Thomas and Jesse James alongside him. It's possible this recent sighting ends the rookie's season altogether.

Lions placed T.J. Hockenson (ankle) on injured reserve.

The first-round rookie has been playing through the pain for weeks. Hockenson stormed out of the gates by catching 6-of-9 targets for 131 yards and a touchdown in his Week 1 NFL Debut, but he struggled to see consistent targets afterwards and surpassed 50 yards in just one other game all season. The Lions will move forward with Jesse James and Logan Thomas as their top-two TEs.

Pretty blah season for him. I know TEs take some time to develop but that's also why you don't draft them with such a high pick.

i get that te's take awhile but this has to be a garbage pick by the lions.  He has so many drops, doesn't seem to be open much and is always hurt.

Too early to say again as TEs take time but it's surely a bad pick given the position he plays.

Lions OC Darrell Bevell said T.J. Hockenson (ankle) "might not be quite 100%" yet.

Hockenson is back to running and running routes but isn't fully healed from last year's season-ending ankle injury sustained in November. For what it's worth, Bevell added that the second-year tight end is still “well on his way" to being 100 percent and that the team is "comfortable with his progress." It will certainly be something to monitor in camp as any prolonged rehab could potentially land Hockenson on PUP in late August.

Lions placed T.J. Hockenson on the COVID-19 list.

It's unclear if he actually tested positive or needs to quarantine because he was near an affected person. Either way, Hockenson will need to test negatively for the coronavirus before joining the Lions for training camp. Practices aren't set to take place until mid-August, so there's some time before he'd actually be missing on-field reps. If healthy, Hockenson is a breakout TE2 option in the double-digit rounds of fantasy drafts. He was widely considered one of the better tight end prospects of the last decade.

Lions activated TE T.J. Hockenson from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Hockenson was on the COVID-19 list for just over a week. The Lions recently removed Matthew Stafford and Kenny Golladay from the list as well. Hockenson's short stint on the list doesn't change his status as a breakout TE candidate going in the double-digit rounds of fantasy drafts.

You have to be patient with TEs.  I remember not being patient with Kittle and trading him cheap before his breakout.  Then again some never do much when expected to do so.

Lions TE T.J. Hockenson said his ankle is "still not quite 100%" after rehabbing throughout the offseason.

Lions OC Darrell Bevell suggested as much back in June while Hockenson was running routes during rehab. The sophomore himself said he's out there "running around and trying to push forward" but is coming along slower than he initially thought. Perhaps Hockenson will be healed by Detroit's regular season opener, but at this rate, fantasy players should heed his current ADP as the overall TE12 given that he might be limited out the gates.
