What is something about life in 2024 that would completely astonish someone living in 1974? (1 Viewer)

And pickleball. I mean, WTF is that?!
I played pickleball in college in 1982. Not 1974, but just sayin'. So pickleball has been around a long time, but just not as popular. Our instructor died of cancer shortly thereafter. May she RIP.

That popular musicians of the time would still be out touring and making albums.
Somewhat relatedly, that vinyl albums will become virtually obsolete (absent the current nostalgic renewed interest).
Or the evolution of how we consume music. It went from vinyl and 8 tracks to cassettes to cds to digital downloads. Now most people have a library of music on their phones.
On a related note, how we can listen to music wherever we are.

Bottled water.
Not the most astonishing thing, but interesting how we have become obsessed with hydrating.
When I was a kid we would go to the water fountain between classes or line up at it for a water break during gym class. Now every child has a refillable water bottle they bring to school with them and a lot of adults have them too.

I agree with others that the "phone" would be the thing that would blow people's minds in 1974. I was watching an old Match Game episode on Youtube from 1974 and I thought if I could stand in front of that panel (Richard Dawson, etc) and tell them something from 2024 that would blow their minds it would be that 50 years from now almost everybody will carry around a computer in their pocket that fits in their hand. With this computer you can do anything from placing phone calls to reading about and discussing in-the-moment events happening anywhere around the world to taking pictures and video to thousands of other things. I'd tell them that people in 2024 can and will watch the particular episode of Match Game that they're taping right now whenever they like on this device. If they had this device with them now they could use it to have food delivered to them. They could buy stocks on it. They could use it to gamble. They could have a stranger pick them up after the show and drive them wherever they wanted. The device weighs several grams and you don't have to plug it in when you use it. They could watch new release movies on it. They could shoot and edit their own movie with it. Imagine Dawson's face when you're telling him all this stuff? Imagine the questions they would have about it.

"Jack was feeling a little adventurous, so he sent Jill a pic of his (blank)."

I was 10 in 1974, no question the internet is the biggest thing to happen to the world in that time frame and all the accoutremon that has accompanied it.

Oh, and porn

That about 100 devices that were separate and distinct things or didn’t exist in 1974 are combined into one device that is called a “phone” but bears little resemblance to the telephones of 1974.
Jokes aside, this is obviously the correct answer. The whole concept of walking around with a "phone" that combines actual phone calls with social media, music and video streaming, GPS, apps that replace customer service drones, etc. would be hard to believe.
I was convinced just 25 years ago that as soon as internet became reliable everywhere people would stop carrying around those stupid phones (BlackBerrys) with their stupid tiny little buttons to try type emails and text messages. Everyone would rather just use their laptop everywhere. Boy was I wrong.

On the phone subject, my local mall just yanked out the last known payphone in my area. I feel like I should empty a 40 full of dimes somewhere.

What do you predict will be happening in 2074 that will our minds? Jetson’s air travel cars? Space travel?
Not getting me on flying cars again. Besides, we probably stand a better chance of riding with the family down the street, courtesy of Fred's two feet than flying cars in 50 years.
#boom #armegeddon #WWIII
We can't keep doofus athletes from causing accidents in 2D, we are probably better off postponing George and Astro from their future air escapades.

Computers/internet/phones.

How much everything costs now - I think that would be a huge shock.

In the U.S. - how casual people dress for just about all occasions, and how manners have deteriorated.

How about people taking their dogs inside the supermarket? I just got back from a run to the store and saw 3 people in there with their dogs. Not support dogs, just regular pooches out for a walk in the bread aisle. Blows my mind that people do this. That would not stand in 1974. You could sit in the parking lot and down a 6'er of PBR before you headed home but no way was Fido allowed into that store.

Interesting as 50 years ago today was Aaron’s 715th HR, and the hate letters he received.

What would shock people today from that time - the advancement of blacks, women, and gays in society.
On that note, a women's basketball game is the most watched non football game outside network tv (what's that) ever.
And I did not watch a single minute of it......

I think it will be how immersed we are in our digital lives. You'll wake up, put something over your eyes and be in a completely different world. You'll call you're buddies and ask them if they want to watch the Knicks game later. Then when the game starts, you and your friends will feel like you are sitting next to each other courtside watching the Knicks play the Celtics. You'll turn and talk to your friend about the last dunk as if you're actually sitting next to him in the Garden. When the game is over you'll remove you eye computer and make love to your 4 sex robots who are indistinguishable from real people. When you finish inside one of the robots they will test your sperm for any health problems so it will be like sex and a doctor visit all in one.

And it honestly is destroying society and how we can't actually communicate effectively anymore.

As someone born in 1974...

My lifetime has seen computers start big, get smaller, then become laptops/tablets and merge with phones.
Phones moved off the wall, got cordless, got smaller, fit in your pocket, then started to get bigger.

Do newspapers still exist?

Sports teams sell for Billions of dollars.

Today's commercials: The amount of alcohol and drugs advertised openly and constantly.

I’m reminded of the old joke about not being able to satisfy one woman. Hopefully the robots don’t have the ability to be disappointed.

They will be programed to only have desire for you. You will be their perfect match. They will love literally everything about you. You will be their Kim Jong Un. For an extra $599 they can be programmed to become turned on by the smell of your farts.

You got me in stitches Willie!!

I agree with others that it has to be the smart phone but there’s some fairly remarkable medical advancements that would blow peoples minds too.
You can repair someone's heart or arteries by making a tiny incision and maneuvering a catheter through it. That would certainly blow people's minds.

When Andreas Gruentzig came up with the idea for angioplasty in the late '70s, the entire medical community thought he was nuts.
