Two Muslim holidays added to the NYC school calendar next year (1 Viewer)

Lots of controversy over this. My facebook feed is littered with people saying this is disgusting and a slap in the face of America. I dont really care too much. We have Catholic and Jewish holidays, why not Muslim? My only complaint is now I have to take two extra days off next year to watch my son. Discuss

Apparently my right-wing friend who #####es about crap like this either had to go to work early or slept in. Nothing yet.

NY public schools close down for Catholic and Jewish holidays?

The only holiday our kids get with religious overtones is a couple of days around Easter. Everything else is secular. (And I'd prefer that schools ignore the latter -- public school holidays ought to be secular if for no reason other than this one).

your children dont get Christmas off? That sucks. NYC public schools are also closed on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
 
Why now?------What has changed that he felt they needed to add these holidays?----Do the Hindus, Buddhist etc. have holidays--------Just some questions to ponder.

Christmas falls under their winter break.

If they're closing down schools for Yom Kippur, then yeah I can't see any principled argument for not also allowing Muslim holidays or whatever.

What is the issue with this? It is just complete and utter hypocrisy. Not one Christian holiday is mentioned on their calendar, but there is a two-day Jewish holiday and now two Muslim holidays which are specifically identified as such. We can't utter the words Christmas or Easter in the schools without the PC police coming out in full force with their lawsuits. Stop the friggin charade games in fear of offending people, and recognize Christian holidays as such. This whole hypocritical non-sense comes across as saying you should be ashamed to be a Christian. NY schools are pandering to the anti-Christian bigots, IMHO. Schools should not be a place for forcing any religion on to anyone, but it should be open to recognizing all religions and explaining traditions and meaning behind the holidays.

Should equal out. Maybe trade Secretary's Day and Tax Day for two of theirs? :shrug:

Don't start negotiations with 420 though as that's a non-starter and could blow up the deal.

 
There was a big kerfuffle here in Maryland last fall when the Montgomery county school board announced they would no longer reference religious holidays when designating school closures on the calendar. All regular 'holidays' are based on absenteeism rates which also coincide with religious holidays considering the make up of the student population.

Some Muslim groups have pressed for years to have their holidays included on the calendar so Mont. Co. took the other approach to halving the baby. If there is a predetermined significant absenteeism during times of Eid al-Adha et al. then the school calendar will also include days off for those days as well.

Trust me dude, I am more than ok with my belief system. You feel free to believe what you want. Is it wrong to want to nuke those countries off the face of the earth? Is it wrong to think that Muslims hate us? Because I do on both. If these thoughts make me ignorant, like I said, I am more than ok with that. I'm done in this thread though. Welcome to America - land of the offended.

Why not just tell kids that there will be 2 "floating" religious holidays. that they can take dependant of their faith? School is open for all of these holidays, and kids can take off if they need to on those days.

For those saying, "But then teachers have to work all these days," I get that...they also get summer off.

Here in the upper mid-west they are ignored in a sense.. There is no more "Christmas Break" it is now Winter break, just happens to fall around Christmas time ;)

No Easter break.. Heck even "Spring Break" is going the way of the dodo bird as the kids in this district get two days off for "Spring Break"..

According to 2014 census the US has a greater % of Buddhists than Muslims. Seems this is driven by the liberal landscape and new sensitivity to Muslims.

As it is US students have way too much time off.

My point is, if you meet a guy, would you rather him just come right out and say, "I know I just met you, but I hate you and all you stand for." Or would you rather him hate you and all you stand for without telling you? I, personally, would prefer people be who they are. I don't have to like them. I can hate them right back...but at least I don't think he's a nice guy when in reality he hates me.
