Retail banking is garbage, lol. (1 Viewer)

Anyone ever work in retail banking? I stand at a teller line all day while my boss and this hot piece of ### sit in their office playing on their cell phones.

I feel like an animal trying to sell people bank accounts when I know like 5 banks that offer way better promotions. Plus, we're in a grocery store, sheesh...

Welcome to the business world. Selling people an inferior product to make a buck is the American way.

Yeah, it's terrible. At least at my old jobs, I felt like people wanted what we were selling. Here, I have to trick people into things they don't need with fees they could avoid by banking elsewhere...

Seriously. I work in software development and I couldn't imagine having to be the one that sells the #### i put together. I'm always amazed how we do so well and then i see the garbage that our competitors put out.

Bank teller at a bank in a grocery store. Look at it this way: You can't do much worse.

Maybe some bank there for convenience or accessibility and choose to do so despite higher fees or less bells and whistles. That's their business. It's not always about getting the lowest price.

Wow, if only some people could have told you what it would be like before you took the job.

1. Didn't you lie on your resume to get this job in the first place?

2. Are they still planning to pay for your college education?

3. Does it bother you when black people apply for loans?

Sounds like you are working from the wrong company.

I never sell someone something that does not help/benefit them. If I can't help them- I will tell them that. I sleep well at night and I do well in my job. And yes, retail banking sucks.

Wait... you are in an in-store? Yea, that really sucks. You deal with all the crap in retail banking and have retail hours. :yucky:

You seem to have plenty of free time yourself.

He's pacing himself.

What bank do you work for?
Payday Loans.
I prefer Snickers Savings & Loan.
:rimshot:
Seriously would like to find that thread, I remember it being very funny.

What bank do you work at Em? Just give me the name.
Five from three...three from five...three-fifths...something along those lines.ETA: Fifth Third Bank

Fifth Third has a horrible reputation to work for at least in the Chicago area.

The name of that bank alone screams horror
They are a competitor of mine in the Chicago area. I hated the name and it drove me crazy enough to actually find out why the name is the name... turns out 5th Bank of Yadda Yadda and 3rd Bank of Yadda Yadda merged back in the day and they thought it was a good idea to rename the new bank Fifth Third. I was hoping for at least a decent story behind the stupid name. Nope.

I don't notebook, but I thought that Em was from NYC, which is why I guessed NYCB or PNC, since they are the ones that do most of the supermarket banking in this area.

I had a large deposit after selling a house and the Wells Fargo guy spent 45min with me making sure I put my money into a special savings that gets 0.1% instead of the normal 0.04%. "That's what we do for our special customers."

Then he gives me 2 followup calls later that day and later in the week.

Stupid.

Those calls were to try and have you come in and meet with the Wells Fargo advisor to invest the money, so you can get out of the special 0.1% mmkt account.

I hear Walgreens is hiring.
I still work there on weekends.I was offered an Assistant Manager's job at Advance America prior to taking the bank job. Job market is fairly warm for me but I need $20 an hour. I'm at $13.75 and that $6.25 is a mark I need to get over. I would bust my ### for $20 an hour.

Will you ever listen to me and stop focusing on your short term income? $20/hr seems like a lot at your age but you're going to be pushing 30 soon and should be focusing on getting an education that will put you in a $50/hr job.

$50 an hour would be insane.

Yeah to think that someone that someone could work hard and reach $100K a year is really unthinkable.

I turn 24 next month. I don't expect most people under 30 are making six-figures.

Thanks but you better get your ### back to work or I'm going to report you and Ken for doing those nasty things to each other in the break room.

Anyone who would work harder for increase in pay is not someone I would ever hire. It shows poor character when you put forth less effort for less pay. I've worked with people who are lazy and don't take their job seriously because they make less. They're pieces of ####

On principle, I do agree largely with what you are saying but there also needs to be an understanding of compensation packages as well as other parts of the job do impact a persons level of engagement and willingness to work hard. We know this, that is why many jobs have incentive, commission, bonus, etc type of pay as part of compensation.

In the areas of commission and bonuses being connected to your work output, I mostly agree. I don't think that's what he was referring to, though. Of course, this is the real world and a lot of people are that way.

I'm just saying that you are thinking incrementally instead of big picture. Believe it or not, I'm currently making less than you ($12.50 a hour) but I took the job because it was the only way to break into the business (commercial real estate appraising). For a year of that in order to get my license I'm looking at a job making $100k+, 5x that if I open up my own office.
