Miami Dolphins 2002 - 2007 = :bag:

Miami Dolphins 2008 and beyond? :) :boxing:

After the worst season in franchise history, there is renewed hope in Miami as the Big Tuna comes in to begin the rebuilding process as the VP of Football Operations.

One of Parcells first tasks was to bring in fromer Dallas personnel man Jeff Ireland to be the Dolphins GM, and hired Tony Sparano, former Cowboys offensive line coach, to be the Head Coach. Sparano has hired Dan Henning and Paul Pasqualoni as the offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively.

The Dolphins enter the offseason with multiple needs and holes at almost every position. After cutting star LB Zach Thomas and serviceable WR Marty Booker, the Dolphins have over 40 million dollars in cap space to start rebuilding their roster. With the number 1 overall pick in April's draft and 3 more picks in the first 3 rounds, the Dolphins will be looking to bolster the offensive and defensive lines, as well as improving at DB and QB. Speculation has run rampant as to what they will do with that first pick. They will almost certainly try to trade out of that one spot but if unable to do so, they'll most likely be looking at either DE Chris Long, OT Jake Long, or QB Matt Ryan at the top spot.

There will be a number of players the Dolphins will be looking at closely in free agency, most notably former Cowboys OT Flozell Adams and G Alan Faneca. This is an exciting offseason for Miami fans, and hopefully the start of the next great era in Dolphins history...

Let's get some good discussion going on here about Dolphins offseason moves, including who they should pick up in free agency (Flozell Adams), what they should do with that number 1 pick (trade down), who they should try to trade for (not Deangelo Hall) , and what they should do with Jason Taylor (keep him for crying out loud!). Should Beck be given another chance (yes) or should they draft Matt Ryan (nooo)... ?

It's a pivotal year for Miami, and what the Dolphins do THIS off season will have huge ramifications for years to come...in Parcells we trust... Here we come New England!

What they should do is if Anderson isn't signed by the Browns then the Dolphins should work out a deal with the Cowboys, even if it is less favorable than the trade chart suggests, and try to come out of this with Derek Anderson, Marion Barber, and a 1st (28th). Their first overall pick is an albatross to any franchise. Paying the amount of money the first overall pick gets for any of these guys is too much of a gamble. By trading down in the first and the 3rd to Dallas and receiving 2 1sts, Dallas' 3rd, and Marion Barber. (3265pts for Miami - 1572pts from Dallas + Barber) This would give Jerry Jones the ability to draft McFadden and getting a numerical dominant trade on the chart.

From this point I think they may have to play dirty with Cleveland to ensure that they get Anderson and invoke the poison pill. They would have to include something in the contract like a guarantee to not have to pay state taxes or play multiple games in the state of Florida. They could also try to play around with the contract to make it very unlikely that Cleveland would match. I think they would have to have it set in stone that if they made a deal with Dallas that they were going to be shipping a 1&3 to Cleveland for Anderson.

Dolphins should strongly consider a Shaun Rogers acquisition by offering a third which i believe is the asking price. our third is the highest third in the league and should do the trick.

I believe if you make an offer of a restricted free agent (without negotiating down the picks), you must offer YOUR 1st and 3rd, not just any 1st and 3rd. If you have traded away that pick, you can substitute a higher pick (even by trading for it). The Redskins had to do this a few years ago. They did not have the right draft pick for a restricted free agent and traded with the Jets to get a pick that would work. So, if the Dolphins go after Anderson, the will have to play nice with Cleveland or give up their 1st and 3rd round picks.

Dolphins strike deal with 49ers guard Justin Smiley

By Harvey Fialkov

It didn't take long for the Dolphins to strike in free agency as they've agreed to a deal with 49ers guard Justin Smiley early Friday morning, making him the first piece of what's expected to be a rebuilt offensive line.

Smiley, 26, will replace Dolphins free-agent right guard Rex Hadnot, who the Dolphins have not offered a contract to. The 6-foot-3, 311-pound Smiley reportedly agreed to a five-year contract worth $25 million with a $9 million signing bonus.

According to his agent Patrick Dye, the deal is contingent on Smiley, who was placed on San Francisco's injured reserve in November because of a torn labrum, passing his physical today.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity," Smiley told the Press-Democrat before flying to South Florida Friday morning. "Miami called as soon as they were able to call me and told me they'd like to have me down there. They called me right after it [free agency] started. They offered me that [contract]. I feel very blessed. It feels good to have security. I want to go down there and give them every penny's worth and play hard for them."

Smiley, who played at Alabama, was the 49ers second-round pick in 2004. He started 32 games in 2005 and '06 but had season-sending shoulder surgery last November, which limited him to eight games in 2007.

Free agency officially began at 12:01 Friday morning and the Dolphins have many critical areas to address on offense and defense.

Parcells is a busy guy today

The Miami Dolphins have stormed out of the free-agent gate, adding yet another young player. The Dolphins reached agreement with former Tennessee defensive tackle Randy Starks on a five-year, $21 million contract that includes $7 million worth of guaranteed money. The best part of Starks might be his upside. He is only 24 years old.

I don't know much about the guy.

God I love Parcells. I think he's making the right moves.

I'd like to see them draft Jake Long and (hate me if you want) bring Gus Frerotte back at QB.

Dolphins, Jets :: TE

Dolphins Sign TE Ryan

Tom Rock, New York Newsday - [Full Article]

TE Sean Ryan, formerly of the New York Jets has signed with the Miami Dolphins today.

And the trade for Ferguson sounds like it is pretty much a done deal:
The Dolphins are also on the verge of trading for a third new player, as a trade for Dallas nose tackle Jason Ferguson appears imminent. Ferguson is expected to be traded for draft picks, not current Miami players.

The Dallas Morning News reported on its website that a trade has indeed been agreed upon. The Cowboys and Dolphins will swap sixth-round picks this year and Dallas will receive Miami's sixth-round pick in 2009, the newspaper reported.

The common theme among all of these defensive players is clear: Size. Most of the bodies visiting South Florida are bulky, tough players, which should be expected from a team being put together by Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland.

So, who has a guess as to Wilford's numbers in 2008? He'll start opposite Ginn, yes? 50 catches, or 40, or 60? 5 TDs? Less? More?

-- Dolphins; Wilford Agree to Contract --

Fri Feb 29, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have agreed to terms with free agent WR Ernest Wilford, who started 14 games for the Jaguars last season, sources told The Miami Herald. He has played in Jacksonville for all four years of his NFL career. Wilford, who caught 45 passes for 518 yards last year, is the second receiver who will join the team in as many days, as the team signed former Broncos WR David Kircus on Thursday.

Didnt realize they brought in Kircus as well.

Wilford, Ginn, Hagan, Camarillo and Kircus? Who else?

Sirius NFL reporting they signed Josh McCown
DOLPHINS SIGN JOSH MCCOWN by Michael David Smith Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Miami Dolphins have reached a contract agreement with free agent quarterback Josh McCown.Per Schefter, the contract is a two-year deal worth $6.25 million. Although that's a contract more in line with what a backup usually makes, McCown may very well be the Dolphins' starter in September. Of the three quarterbacks on the Dolphins' 2007 roster, two -- Trent Green and Cleo Lemon -- are already gone, and the third -- John Beck -- was unimpressive in the four games he started. McCown started nine games for the Raiders last year, completing 58.4 percent of his passes and throwing 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He previously started 22 games for the Cardinals from 2003 to 2005, and he spent the 2006 season with the Lions, where his only regular-season playing time came at wide receiver. The Dolphins have been the busiest team in the league on a very busy first day of free agency.

I hate the McCown signing. Seriously hate it. Only thing I like about it is that it is cap-friendly.

If they ALSO bring in Frerotte (or is Leftwich available?), I am OK with it - I know they need warm bodies right now, but McCown? Really?

That Starks signing is going to be very good for the Dolphins. he is going to be a nice fir as a 3-4 d end. He has experience in the 3-4, as that is the defense U Maryland ran while he was there. Ferguson on the nose, and Starks on one of the ends. That is looking pretty good. They still have a ways to go, but they are starting to get the pieces for that 3-4: Pace (whose signing I don't like at all), Ferguson, and Starks

Jason taylor will remain with the team, IMO, and will flip-flop in the 3-4 between lining up at end and lining up at LB.

The team is off to the right start on the defensive side of the ball, IMO.

I see they didn't sign Pace, that is a smart move by the Phins.

I really like what they are doing here.

I think Pace used the 'phins to get a better deal from the Jets.
Nahh, I think he was just going to the highest bidder - And if anything from what he said he was leaning towards Miami since he lives in Atlanta and spoke of "lifestyle and weather"........Miami went to 20 Million and the Jets jumped up to 22...... Sounds like Parcells was completely willing to spend the 20 million... As a Jets fan that's somewhat comforting but, I'm a little leery as most football fans on spending that much on a guy with his track record...Jets GM was just on the radio speaking about how Pace is great in coverage, great against the run and will be used all over the place in this defense.... Hope for the best, still hoping for Gholston.

Dolphin fans,

Former Miami Dolphins G Rex Hadnot just visited the Steelers premises on Wednesday.

Is he a viable option at RG, LG, or C?

Some of us at the Steeler thread are talking about this dude but have not followed him too closely.

IMO, parcells is adding depth and help on special teams through free agency. maybe we can help ginn score some returns.

Boomer Grigsby and Keith Davis are examples of the new regime showing interest in special teams.

i hope we draft right this year and get some superstars.
