Netflix "Watch Instantly" gems: FBGs recommended

Recommended Posts

Not sure how you guys are getting through these movies.  The Dirt was pretty damn bad and Triple Frontier wasn't much better.

Might just be me turning into a grumpy old fart, but I feel like expectations are too low for streaming movies.  It's like since we feel like they are basically free vs dropping $15 at the theater, just about anything will make due for a couple hours.  I still maintain that a large % of the Netflix movies are worthless.

Honestly, Nick - I'm not trying to harsh the OA.

I'm still watching Mad Men, Fargo, Shameless, and lots of other great stuff.

Plus, shuke eatin is pretty quality too.

I really do plan to watch, but it's on a list.

But I think you can and you should! It’s bananas.  And that’s why I had to tune in immediately.

My feelings are ... You shouldn't go into watching movies like Dirt expecting Oscar worthy performances.. A movie like Dirt is to be watched to enjoy the time period, the music and the outright amazement that some of these guys are still alive. Just grab a bag of  and enjoy it for what it is.

On Triple Frontier.. I had higher expectations based on the cast and the previews and was disappointed. Dragged at many parts, some really "Why the Bleep would they even think of doing that" moments. At best I'd give it a 2 out of 5.

Echoing what has been said about Triple Frontier, was a decent enough story to draw me in, but the movie just was a whole lot of unmemorable.  Pass.

Few shows been powering through here of late.

Castle Rock on Hulu.  I know I had seen mention of this earlier, but I didn't have Hulu and finally was able to check it out.  Hmmm, I think on an episode by episode basis the series was quite good.  I didn't binge this one, rather watched one episode at a time.  I was looking forward to the next episode and see what twist or continuation of a story line it may bring.  Second to last episode really had my hopes up because I liked where it was going and then it just kind of fell flat on the last episode.  I dunno maybe I missed something but all in all it was good enough that I'll watch the next season, but not good enough I'd recommend if that makes sense.

Hap and Leonard. Oh boy.   I don't even know where to begin on this one, nor what I was getting myself into.  Still on season 1 here so the jury is still out but this show is a bit off the trodden path.  Really like the two leads and the secondary cast are a bunch.  We'll see.

I get it, The Dirt is a different animal, but I think it's a snowball effect for me after stuff like Triple Frontier, Birdbox, etc.. that have decent people attached to them but are pretty bad movies.  I give The Dirt a little more of a pass, but looking at the overall product of movies that Netflix attaches their name to and it's not good.  I think a normal movie studio would have gone under pumping out these turds by now, but it doesn't phase them because they have guaranteed eyeballs since it's a subscription plan.

Like I said, it's probably just me being an old grump, being way more of a movie fan than TV show fan, and being disappointed that I have 4 subscription plans and can barely find a movie that I haven't seen that I like on any of them.  My movie queue should be more than 10 deep between 4 subscriptions.

we gave up on Triple Frontier... just didn't pull us in enough to finish.

Castle Rock- totally understand your comments. it was up and down for me, with some great moments. I recall flat out loving the episode that centered on Sissy- captured dementia/alternate temporal reality in a way I hadn't seen before, and it felt consistent through all aspects of the episode- writing, acting, lighting, editing, art-direction... amazing TV. but then there was memorable, goofy stuff too... and the whole series I came away not feeling too much one way or the other. so yeah- good enough to watch, but other than that one episode, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it either.

Usually really disappointed with Steven King books that become  tv or movie adaptions... So thur that lense I was pretty entertained by Castle Rock.

As far as Castle Rock goes, I would guess the second season will have nothing to do with the first season. So another 10 episodes with an entirely different plot and set of characters. But again, developed in the vein of or as an homage to Stephen King. Basically, each season may be a standalone season.

I'd hesitate to recommend it to anyone because objectively it's so ####### dumb.  You will find yourself rolling your eyes frequently; if I tried to explain it, it would sound like a disaster.  But there's something about it I just love, and I've heard that kind of sentiment echoed by many others.  It's like it's so committed to its vision that you can't help but go along for the ride.

I'd say watch the first episode all the way through and then decide for yourself whether to keep going.

I don't remember S1 ep1 and whether it took more than that to get the overall vibe.

but overall- well said. :waving octopus hands wildly:

eta: that said- I may have looked over at my wife at the conclusion of S2 and punched myself in the face... only because it felt like somebody's face needed punching, and with this whole metoo thing, I figured I may as well stop punching her in the face when a show goes rogue.

You definitely won't get the full essence of the OA in the first episode (I just remember that it had the longest cold open in history) but I think you'll get enough to know whether you want to bail or keep going.

I might suggest 3 episodes but I think you pretty much have to commit to season 1 or why bother.

Does the Marvel series "Luke Cage" get any better after the 1st episode? I thought S1 of DD was "meh" and JJ was only marginally better (mostly the writing but I've found that a little Kristyn Ritter goes a long way..). Colton isn't much of an actor with Cage but it's crazy how awful the writing is in the hands of superior actors like Mahershala Ali and Alfre Woodard.

For me it got better with ep 4 and continued until the last 2 eps.  But I loved DD and liked JJ better then Cage

If DD was only meh for you, then you may not be a fan...DD was the best Marvel series...Jessica Jones S1 is also great

Luke Cage was very good for the first half of S1...

i really liked JJ S2, but not everybody agrees

Iron fist 🤜 was the weakest entry

For me-

Tier 1: DD1, Punisher1, DD2, JJ1

Tier 2: Punisher 2, Defenders, DD3, IF2, JJ2, LC1

Tier 3: IF1, LC2

I'm with you, both were bad but at the least the Crue movie had decent music and ####.

Started IO last night because I was bored, it's going down the same road, boring as #### so far, has about 30 minutes left to pick up but not hopeful.

Still plenty of good on Netflix, think I've just picked some dogs lately.

pull the plug on IO, IMO- not worth the payoff finishing it up.

I liked the first 3 episodes of Love, Death + Robots well enough. The animation was cool and I liked the voiceover work but the 4th was really good, where the 2 creatures are pitted against each other using mind control. That was intense...and hot too towards the end. Each has been entertaining so far.

Same here. Love Netflix for the series (a lot from other networks I never caught) but the movies are very underwhelming (being generous).

I did enjoy Dirt too even though it was cheesy junk. Just reliving the era, hearing the music, and envying the lifestyle (not really, in another life maybe) was enough.  As an aside, my wife walked in near the beginning of the movie (when the woman was in the chair having a sex act performed on her with the “explosive” finish), shot me a dirty look, and later said she thought I was watching porn. And no, she would have no reason otherwise to think this. I started laughing. We have far different tastes when it comes to movies.

Shadow...takes place in South Africa where an ex-cop delivers his own brand of justice.   If you suspend disbelief, its a fine action series with a few sub plots thrown in and the girlfriend is crazy hot to boot.

Just watched the first episode of this based on your recommendation. Its definitely over the top, but I enjoyed it. Its a fun action show. I'm in for more.

It needs nudity, though.

Wife and I watched episode 1 of Handmaid’s Tale about a month ago.  We haven’t decided if we’re contiuing.   Not sure why, it seems like it would be something up my alley.  Maybe because I’ve read the book so already know what’s going on?

Please advice.

I think it's one of the best shows from the last several years.     There are a couple missteps in S2, but still damn good TV.   One of my favorite books and one of my favorite genres, so take that FWIW.

Haven't read the books, so I don't know how faithful it is to the source material... but it's a worthwhile watch.

The overall story is preposterous, but acting is incredible and the individual episodes have just enough tension to keep you interested

3 episodes in and I'm enjoying it.  The story's still being worked out but the young girl who plays Hannah is pretty good and she kicks ### about as convincingly as she can

Production values are great with some fantastic sets and scenery.  Prime must have spent a boatload on this show.

So far I'll give it 4 out of 5 stars on the Lifetime Channel scale.

Did you see the original movie? If so, is it necessary or is this a complete reboot?

Just saw Layer Cake

It's a 2004 British movie with Daniel Craig and some other familiar faces in other shows about a drug dealer. Similar feel to Snatch and Lock Stock (and the same producer or director I think). Never heard of it, saw it on the list and watched and enjoyed it. Entertaining flick and worth the watch if you haven't seen it.

The show, so far 2ish eps in, is a retelling of the movie but filled out a bit.

I loved the movie. Loved how the makers made it feel like a fable throughout, which felt distinct and unique. Also beautifully filmed and acted w great music...again. All supporting the fable idea. The show seems to have completely lost the fable theme, which is a bummer. Also not sure about dad- a role Eric Bana played with a lot of depth- but here not so much yet...even though I like the actor and enjoy seeing The Killing reunion with the redhead.

So for me, I'm still in not as good as the movie mode, which is disappointing. But the story is compelling on it's own and I'm interested in seeing how the diverge from the original. And as lifetime network boy mentioned, great locations and good action

Really? I know the bar is low with those two but I've never seen worse previews than the ones I saw for Black Lightning. Looked like it belonged in an even worse version of the Arrow/Flash CW universe. And that's saying something.

Through 3 myself. Insane animation with loads of nudity and some gore. Overuse of the F word though... very interested to see the rest.
