Brother is a serial Killer (1 Viewer)

Holy Crap, I cant believe there is another person out there. Unlike you, I don’t talk about it much.

But here goes:

My brother was a cereal eater.

I am ashamed.

However, when I opened the video game box it was filled with mail addressed to Rebecca Huismann, some notes in female hand writing, a used menstrual pad, photos taken of women, photos of the license plates on cars and several newspaper clippings of people's wedding announcements. I took it all to the Lansing Michigan Police and they acted like I was handing them a dirty diaper. Not the enthusiasm for the possibility for new leads that I'd have thought.
Seriously. Wow. :loco:

Did they ever determine what it was that was motivating him?

The box of serial killer stuff must have been super creepy.

I do think that it's fairly common in serial killer profiles that they have a very large sense of entitlement.

Man, so sorry for what's happened in your past, and to those girls. Sorry your family has had to go through this, as well as theirs'. I know you aren't looking for sympathy, but its sincere. This kind of little anecdote:

My brother was very insistent that when it came to material things, it had to be equal or in his favor. For instance, I took karate lessons as a kid. My brother insisted that my mother give him the amount of money she paid for my lessons. She offered to pay for him to take lessons but he wanted money instead. He got the most expensive high school ring he could get. My mom offered to buy me one, but I knew she couldn't afford to get us both one so I told her not to and didn't ask for the money. My brother was fine with that, he could care less if he got a ring and I didn't.
Makes me wish I had a background in psych, so that I could glean something meaningful from it. Its interesting, in context. Just not sure why, exactly.
That paragraph really stood out to me too. I don't think I know anyone who acts like that, at least to that extreme. It does seem to set off a mental alarm, for lack of a better word.

As far as the other investigations I'm not sure what will happen. The police claim they are actively looking at cold cases, but I'm not so sure. My mother and I had gone to collect belongings released by the North Carolina police. There was an XBox in it's original box. Mine had died so I took it home.
Well, they'd just been presented with evidence that they probably can't use because the chain of custody has been broken. I imagine they were a bit pissed at the NC police.

So there is a big age gap between the older brother who was arrrested for secretively filming women use the bathroom and the serial killer brother? What was his story? Do you think he (the older brother who filmed the women) shared some of the same traits as your other brother? Man, I'm sorry to hear about all this. I read one article this morning. Your mom sounds like one hell of a human being. Hate to see you all go through this. Your dad sounds like a real jerkwad. No offense.
"The older brother who was arrrested for secretively filming women use the bathroom." He is very different from the serial killer. He is more social and outgoing. He is my second oldest brother. His story is that he claims as a young teen he found porn in my uncle's basement and became obsessed with it. He went onto college and his dorm room shared an adjoining wall with the women's showers. He drilled a peep hole in the wall. During that time he says he got into weed and booze and became depressed. He eventually found acceptance with the religious group called "The Way". He says he hoped religion would help him resolve his obsession with sex. That didn't work though. As the years went by he would peep into windows to find women undressing. Sex is part of his fixation. But he has always been very artistic, mechanical, and intellectual. He was always building things as a kid. For instance as a young teen he'd build trebuchets that were about 1-2 feet tall and sell them. So a big part of the peeping was the planning and figuring ways to do observe people without them knowing. I recommended that he get back into hobbies where he used his skills to satisfy his creative needs. Just in a positive way. His psychiatrist encouraged him to do so as well.It was at a former employers business that he installed a camera in the ladies restroom. Even though he had moved to the next state over from the business, he used a key he had made a copy of and installed the camera and vcr. He would go back every few weeks on the weekend and collect the tapes. There was a water pipe leak in the ceiling. That's how the camera was found. He had left a finger print in a piece of masking tape used to cover the red "on" button on one of the pieces of electronic equipment. He was convicted and lost his appeal. Once the appeal was over he admitted to his wife that he had committed the crime. Prior to that he had maintained his innocence. In my gut I felt he was guilty after he lost the first trial. He just seemed like he was lying all the time. Anyway, at the time of his conviction, the crime was a misdemeanor so he was fined and had probation with mandatory counseling. He willingly extended his counseling by an additional 2 years because he felt it was helping. He has since divorced. He's had several girlfriends that he has been honest with that he mainly wants a sexual relationship and has no intention of ever getting married again. So he doesn't attract a high quality of woman, but at least he's up front with them and staying out of trouble. My dad, geez that's a whole lot more typing. Some interesting stuff with his own father. Also my dad's death is mysterious as well. I'll answer some questions from other people and then get into that. Remind me if I don't.

I worried at first what would happen when news got out. But I didn't lose any friends, they said that stuff is on my brother, it's not me. Another even said he can feel even safer around me than most people because he knows my past has been combed over by police investigators and reporters and there was no dirt to be found. The reporters were the worst. The crimes happened in Michigan and North Carolina and they went to where I grew up in New Jersey and began knocking on neighbors doors to see if any were living there when we did.As far as the other investigations I'm not sure what will happen. The police claim they are actively looking at cold cases, but I'm not so sure. My mother and I had gone to collect belongings released by the North Carolina police. There was an XBox in it's original box. Mine had died so I took it home. Sounds like you have some great people surrounding you (your friends and your mom). Glad to hear that. This last paragraph is  .

No joke - I recently found out that my missing half-brother was likely killed by serial killer Randy Kraft in the early 1970's. He was in the Marines and was thought to have went AWOL and disappeared but now we are assuming that he must have been hitchhiking when he was picked up by Kraft.
Randy Kraft's sister was my kindergarten teacher in Westminster, CA. "Uncle Randy" used to come in from time to time with a guitar and sing songs with us. True story.

Why did people at school think this -

Ironic thing is, people started joking around in middle school that he had a list of people he planned to kill.
What did he do that made people think that?
It was mostly because he used to collect all kinds of replicas of weaponry from the middle ages. We were into Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), so I attributed his interest in the weapons to that. The books he read were in that D&D vein. I plan on reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, that was my brother's favorite series of books. I know he'd read them many times already, but those were the books he'd requested when my mom wanted to order books from Amazon to be sent to him in prison. The significance of those books is that he main character is an outcast in this world but keeps ending up in a D&D type world where he is thought to be some epic hero. He thinks he's just dreaming so the first time he rapes the first woman he sees on his first trip. I just wonder if my brother felt some connection with this character.

It's a little deeper than that. Thomas Covenant is a leper in the real world and his raping of Lena at the beginning of the first book is because he gets "healed" and can suddenly experience physical senses and he loses control and rapes her. In general though, he is a tortured character who struggles with the notion of being a hero or a savior and has an immense amount of self hatred. The fantasy land itself is kind of a reflection of his own psyche. So, yeah, I'm sure he probably did identify with that character quite a bit.

First off, I'm sorry for the insanity all of this has injected into your life. As a point of curiosity, how old was your brother when your father died?

What the hell kind of novels are you guys reading? Jesus....

Just looked up that guy. Holy crap.

 Did he kill/torture animals when he was small? When did you first notice something was "off" with your brother? Just generally mean all the time?
He did burn ants and caterpillars with a magnifying glass. But pretty much every kid my age did that. It was before video games. We lived up on a mountain, so there were only about 20 houses within a 15 minute walk of us. Anyone whose lived in a place that isn't heavily populated knows people tend to drop their unwanted animals in these areas. My brother would hunt birds with his BB gun to help feed stray cats and he'd build them dens out of scrap lumber. Seemed like he was always mean to me. My mom tells this story. She was on the phone. I was 2 and Drew had just turned 4. I was batting at the screen door. Drew thought I wanted out so he let me out. I was found walking in the street holding up about 10-15 cars. I don't think he was hoping I'd get run over, but can I be sure? The earliest definitive time I recall him being weird was when he was about 7 or 8. Drew didn't like to brush his teeth, partly because he derived enjoyment from blowing his horrible breath into people's faces. He blew his stank breath into his best friend's face and the kid said "his breath smelled like brussel sprouts." Drew never had anything to do with that kid again. And they had been really close, sleep overs, always chose each other when picking teams, sat next to each other on the school bus. Never understood that.

i'm in north carolina, and i remember your brother being on the news. i remember vividly watching the news, and it showed him being wheeled into court restrained. he had on a prison suit, and his hair was long and unkept. he also wouldn't open his eyes. it was the first time i had ever seen a prisoner wheeled around restrained (except for hannibal lecter). i'm sorry that you and your family have had to deal with a lot of bad stuff. maybe someday those treasures of your brothers in the xbox that you turned in will help solve another case.

He was about 20 when my dad died. I recall the day because I was walking home from the bus stop after finishing my college classes that day. There was a police car in the driveway. He rolled down the window as I walked up and asked "Is this Sarah Chandler's house?"I said "Yes."As he started backing out of the driveway he said "Tell her, her ex-husband died in a fire in Wyoming." And drove away.

Jeebus. What an #######. People in that position need to have compassion and common sense.

Jesus...you don't catch many good breaks, do you?

Did your brother have any girl friends? Do you think he had consensual sex? Curious if rape was the first time he had intercourse with a female.

am i the only one not understanding this exchange?

Based solely on the news article you linked, I didn't understand the thread title, but after you shared additional background info a couple things stood out, making it understandable why you might suspect a "serial" killer.

The X-box carton full of potential mementos/keepsakes from victims is pretty damn creepy and I've read that it's also common amongst serial killers. Iirc they keep such tokens to help them fantisize and relive their crimes. I'm really glad to hear that you did what you could and turned it all over to the authorities. IMO you deserve credit for doing that, and I sincerely hope a detective in Lansing will follow up on or at least explore this potential evidence.

The other thing that that stood out to me was how your bro seemed to lack empathy for both you and your mom based on your recollections of his treatment of you growing up and his lack of concern for the sacrifices your mom made(possible early hints of psychopathic/sociopathic tendencies?). A single mother of four needs plenty of understanding from the rest of the family when it comes to finances. Glad to hear that you were more concerned about her financial burden than on getting the best HS class ring that money could buy.

Thanks for sharing netnalp, I'm truly sorry for what you're family has gone through, especially your mom.

Do you have any of the demons that your brother did?
I don't believe so. He was very quiet. I'm social, even do open mikes occasionally at a comedy club. No, I've never done a set that included "My brother is a serial killer" jokes.

I've gotten degrees in psychology and an MBA. Work as a healthcare manager and am also getting a nursing degree. I'm an empathic person.

One way this all has affected me, is I'm a little paranoid. If something ever happens I don't want people to be able to say, "well, he had the opportunity." I would never hurt someone, especially a kid. Never had the urge to touch a kid. My friends kids will ask me to come play in their room, I feel uncomfortable. Nothing would happen. My concern is that if they were to get molested by someone else and refuse to tell who did it. Because of my brother's I'd be the first one they'd haul in for questioning.

There's no way to explain to a 9 year old that you won't molest them, but someone else might. And because of that you don't want anyone to be able to say you were alone with them.

Also in my brother's things was a key to a Mustang II of my brother's that was in my mom's garage. She opened the trunk and there was a bloody futon mattress. I didn't see it, but mom said the blood stain was about the size of a manhole cover and thick and scabby. She called the police and they never showed up. So after 3 months she threw it away.

ooooooh i thought his brother said that

I am amazed at 2 things.

1. The maturity and poise with which the OP can speak of these things. Congratulations on clearly wrestling through a ####storm bigger than I know I could handle and coming out the other side a sane, productive person.

2. The frequency with which the police seem to mishandle affairs with you and your family. A bloody mattress in a car associated with a murderer? Never showing up? Cop dropping the 'your father (or as far as he knew at least a guy you knew) died' bomb then drives away? That's inexcusable.

Thanks for sharing. How much counseling have you had to go through because of this?
We went through about six months together, then stopped. My mom felt more comfortable talking to me. And I write and that is cathartic for me.

While in prison, Drew wrote me and asked what I thought made me so different in personality than he was. There was two things that happened that I wrote about. The first, I went through a period in grade school where I had a short fuse. It was a big deal because I was the only kid that would punch someone in the face. It was like there was an unwritten rule on the playground that punching was off limits. If someone called me a name I'd slug them. I was angry all the time and felt like I was becoming just like my father, so I made the conscious decision to stop hitting people and in general be a nicer person. I stuck with it, even though walking away from some fights ended up with me being called a #####. Ultimately it mattered that I adhered to my principles and not what other people thought. The second, was as a teenager. My parents were divorced and Drew and I were living at my mom's. My dad stops by and tells Drew and I to load his station wagon up with firewood. Drew was belligerent and was throwing the logs into the car, causing them to thump against the back of the seats. My dad yelled at Drew to stop. So teh next log Drew throws smashes into the dash, sending chunks of plastic all over. The next log takes out the CB radio. My dad turns to me and tells me to beat the crap out of Drew. I had no idea why he wanted me to do it. Dad have never been reluctant to hit us before. What I did know, dad could do what ever he wanted to me but there was no way I was going to hit my brother. I fully expected to get hit when I said "No" but the fist never came. It was at that moment I realized how much bigger I was than my father. This man that terrified me my entire life till then, was afraid of me now. That was a really cathartic moment, getting to literally stand up to one of my demons.Drew wrote back that he remembered the day with the fire wood. Drew wrote "Dad was so convinced you could have taken me in a fight. It was further evidence that he thought you were better. It made me resent you even more."He killed himself a few days later. I'll never know if he still resented me or if he came to terms with that. Thing is I don't really care.

His story is that he claims as a young teen he found porn in my uncle's basement and became obsessed with it. He went onto college and his dorm room shared an adjoining wall with the women's showers. He says he hoped religion would help him resolve his obsession with sex. That didn't work though. As the years went by he would peep into windows to find women undressing.
Interesting that two brothers in your family were peeping toms. Didn't police believe that your brother Drew was the peeping tom in the murdered girl's neighborhood in Raleigh?

That's creepy. I didn't know my half-brother (I believe he was killed in '74 and I was born in '72) but it was still a shock to find out after this long. The FBI is apparently opening up cold cases and they linked him to Kraft. Being the 70's they didn't have the ability to search fingerprints like they do today or they would have found them from the military. My dad died in 1980 and right before he died he told my mom that he was sure that he'd be murdered by the Freeway Killer (Kraft was arrested in 1983)
Here's a newly added UID case in NamUs. I don't see it in DoeNet.https://identifyus.org/cases/8841Nov'74 - Late teens or 20-something white male left naked in a Long Beach apartment building carport. Heart Tattoo on Right Forearm, Skull w/"USMC" Tattoo on Left Forearm. Also has "Bud" and a cross tattooed on left arm.Looks to me like a Randy Kraft victim.ETA: Could be "Van Driveway", or "Marine Down".
His name was Buddy Stuart and was probably "Marine Down".

It is inexcusable. Good posting here.I actually didn't have much to do at work today, so I read up on this a little. The subject matter fascinates and disturbs me at the same time. I've also started watching Dexter, so my macabre side is getting massaged. In any event, I read that his mother has become a hero of sorts in their small Michigan town, going to bat for battered women and offering legal services for those in need. I'm really blown away by what this woman achieved considering the obstacles she faced in life. With that said, I wonder if she made any 'enemies' in the local police departments? Perhaps I've seen too many movies, but it's not out of the question that she butted heads against a police officer a time or two. Maybe a police officer beat his wife and she knew it? Maybe she faced a cop in the court room? Maybe the local police have a bias against her and refused to deal with her or the OP because of a stigma? Or maybe they don't want to publicity?I don't know. The shoddy police work is inexcusable and I hope there aren't any unsolved murders out there..

Early in the investigation, they apprehended someone else that was peeping in windows. That person had a record of sexual assault. DNA ruled that guy out.The case went cold for a couple of years when a new detective was assigned the case. The new detective went to apartment complexes near the victims and asked who was the nosiest person at each complex. The thinking was that the nosy person might have ideas for new suspects. The nosy person at the complex my brother had lived at was shocked that they had never spoken to my brother. He was odd and she felt for sure he was the one that committed the murder.

When they saw Drew, the police thought he might not be able to physically capable of subduing his victim. That's when they investigated the brother that installed the camera. They thought maybe they worked together but that was quickly ruled out.

In the book "Evil Next Door" it talks about a young kid that apparently hung out with my brother, playing the video games. The kid was found to have been stealing women's underwear from the laundry room.

The apartment the kid lived in also shared a wall with the victim. A witness came forth eventually that said one day my brother was asking the kid what did he tell the police. The book doesn't indicate the kid was involved and the author didn't seem to look into what the kid may have known. I'm guessing it's because he's a minor and they didn't want to have him go through further questioning. I just hope he doesn't follow in my brother's footsteps.

What about the neighbor saying a peeping tom in the neighborhood was walking a big dog that was maybe a rottweiler, and he peeped into the murdered girls window a few weeks prior to the murder? i thought that was a big thing that led police to your brother, and witnesses said they saw him walking his dog in the neighborhood.

Man, that's a heavy burden and I don't blame you for being cautious.By the way, you have another brother - how is he and what's your relationship with him like?
