Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

So now my focus turns to recovery and simultaneously trying to get ready to race a 50K on November 7.  It's typically a pretty small field, and depending on who shows up, I might be able to compete for the overall win.

Appetite was back to normal yesterday, so I focused on refueling and took the dog for a short walk (~1.3 miles) to flush out the legs.  A shorter walk this morning and a 20-minute recovery ride on the Peloton.  Scheduled a massage for Thursday morning.

Depending how my legs feel, I might try a short, super easy run tomorrow morning.  Kinda hoping to do an easy 15K trail loop on Saturday or Sunday.  The 50K that I'm racing is three times this loop plus one other roughly 5K loop.

@gruecd -- absolutely, awesome and amazing

Your talk of "survival mode" when you still have ~10 miles left is ridiculous...my survival mode is trying to squeeze in another mile or 2, you are doing an additional 10k-HM after running 40+ miles.  BMF for sure.

My new watch just arrived.  I'll run with a heart rate monitor tomorrow for the first time since July.  I wonder what my VO2 max estimate will be.

Beast of a run @gruecd! Congrats on the milestone and time. That's a long time to be in one's head without others to push you along
Yeah, this.

Hey, @gruecd, a side note and a question.

Side note: You should post that article about knees and running longevity.  It'd be an interesting discussion here.

Question ...a burning question: So which would you prefer - a 53 mile run, or an all-out 5K?

Why Don't Runners' Knees Fail More Often?

Regarding your question, I'd honestly probably prefer the 53-miler.  I just have zero desire to run another all-out 5K anytime soon.

@El Floppo bingo!  I just saw five threads in a row on the main listing where our boy was the most recent poster.  An impressive diversity of threads, I might add.  Official Soccer; What song are you listening to?; Physics and Astronomy; Dog collar recommendations; and our 10K Thread.  Well played, sir, well played.

I'm a rennysauce type of guy.

Yeah. I feel great, like no pain at all right now, and just had the urge to get out. It's nice and cool with a little wind.

Only did 1.3 miles. I'm not crazy or anything.
Well la-di-da I just had surgery where they stuck a knife in my throat and cut out a bunch of #### and then I'm going to go home and be like "whatevs" and "no problemo" and rather than sit around and eat ice cream because this is the one time in your life you're allowed to eat as much ice cream as you want I'm just going to strap on my shoes and go out and run a couple KMs so that I don't lose any fitness from my marathon I ran just a few weeks prior so maybe now that this whole surgery thing is proven to be no big deal I'll go and post on some internet nerd running bbs that the weather was so nice I had to run even though there's a good pound of my insides now sitting in some medical waste dump ready to be incinerated just like I incinerated the pain and went running for giggles.

Next I'm going to go star in an opera as the lead.

From your run this morning, it appears you got it working.  Nice progression!  Crazy paces, and crazy-low HRs for those paces...
Thanks!  Music doesn't work yet.  Won't pair with my headphones among other problems.  Hopefully I'll figure something out.  Everything else is set up how I want it and no complaints about my run this morning with it.  One of my biggest worries was the watch wouldn't light up when I twist my wrist in the dark to see the screen.  Fortunately it does!

My heart rate and cadence were a little lower than I would have expected, so that's good.

@gianmarco: "I don't know ...maybe I'm immune."

@xulf helped me with the headphones bit. I had to the ‘forget device’ the headphones in my Bluetooth, then the watch and headphones paired.

Syncing music is not smooth for me yet, I use Runcasts for pods and haven’t tried to get music as Apple Music seems to be doable wired in and I don’t have premium Spotify.

Forgetting the device from my phone?  I can try that when I get home.  Thanks.  I had some issues trying to link with Spotify.  I have Apple Music now.  I never set up Apple Music on my windows laptop but I guess that should be doable. I ended up connecting the watch to my laptop last night because I had other issues setting things up and noticed that I could download some albums I had on my old iTunes library.  That could at least get me started assuming I can get the headphones paired.

Thanks for asking!

61.  "Your VO2 Max is in the top 1% for your age and gender.  Your Fitness Age is 20."

I think I was up to 64 in late 2018/early 2019.  That was my highest.
Daaang! You're making me and my current 54 max feel like an old man.  Oh, wait ...

I'd say your number reflects the steady and high mileage you've been maintaining for quite a few years.

That worked!  Thanks.  Next step is getting access to more music than just my iTunes library.

Been getting really lazy with my eating habits, so I’m gonna start logging my food again for a while and see if that helps. Not fun.

I jogged a little today during a hike with Summit, maybe a mile, mile and half total during a 3+ mile jaunt.  First running in about 2 months.  No pain in the foot, so hoping I've turned the corner.
Oh man, I hope this is the beginning of your glorious return to ultras.  These parts haven't been the same since your injury.  Really happy to hear of a good "first step".

And you've been a hiking/walking machine over the last few months.  Hopefully that's maintained a good baseline for you.

I had a minor setback last week with some transient pain in my calf that seems like it has almost resolved itself.   yay.

Since I can't compete with the end of month mileage #### measuring contests, I am happy to report that YTD 2020 with 8 active months (May and June = 0 activities), I am crushing all of my previous years according to Strava on active time 158 hours YTD v. next highest 143 hrs for full year in 2017.   Also beating handily in mileage, but that's not a fair comparison.

I've made the transition to full time indoors now (outside of daily walks that I don't log).  Got the bike trainer next to the elliptical.  I've been doing Zwift for a week now and my quick impressions:

- It's great to have coffee, phone, water, laptop at my fingertips.  I haven't landed on a routine yet for Netflix or whatever to keep my interest up, but with the newness of Zwift on the laptop, time goes by quickly so far.

- It sucks to not have any stop signs.  I was riding pretty regularly the last few months, despite that break-in, my butt is sore on Zwift since you are constantly sitting. I am riding with cycling shorts all the time too.  I will ride up in the saddle on virtual hills now moreso as a break for my ###.

- I haven't scratched the surface on any races, workouts or group rides - seems like there is plenty to keep me motivated for the next several months.

- Overall, very pleased with Zwift so far.

Just registered for a 50K on November 14.  It's a week later than the other one that I'd been eyeing (more time to recover/train), it's cheaper, it's only 15 minutes away from home, and it's a faster course.

As I told @gianmarco this morning, I'm kicking around the idea of maybe joining him and the missus for this race.  I already ran it past the wife, and she's surprisingly OK with me leaving her at home for a few days with a then-7-week-old baby.  I think I'm mentally ready to do the prep, but as our esteemed doctor pointed out, my training would need to be much more flexible than normal and would almost certainly end up being something less than ideal.  That said, I can't realistically expect to get into PR shape in 4 months anyway,  so I'd be treating this as a "stepping stone" of sorts on my way to (hopefully) another PR attempt next November at Monumental.

Thoughts from the peanut gallery?

If your goal is to PR next November then I think if your body is up for it you will benefit from going through a training cycle with that small human at home. I would treat the training seriously and approach it as if you're trying to PR to simulate the real thing, but all while deep down knowing that just isn't realistic. Cause training around life with small humans is just a never ending game of dodgeball.

That said, i want to re-emphasize one point above: ensuring your body (and mind!) is up for it. I can't easily glean a snapshot of your actual output since strava combines biking and running, but you've seemed 'on' since winter. You're wired differently than most being an endurance monster, but 18 (pls?) straight months with the switch flipped 'on' is...a long, long time. Especially with a life changing variable added to the mix.

Also, I write this knowing I should do this too. But I'm not ready to yet. I intend to once the calendar year flips, but between now and then I'm in maintenance mode with my weight and am gonna eat whatever the hell I damn well please.

That said, the kids have been remote learning this week (positives in the school). Thankfully they are scheduled to return tomorrow. And these 3 days have made me realize that should things turn south and this becomes (temporarily?) permanent then I will need to start logging food long before I want to in January. I'm not usually a stress eater (nor drinker), but I'm having flashbacks to the stress eating that crept into my world in April and May. Kinda glad the school did this, so I'm proactive should it happen again.

To quote/paraphrase the great @gianmarco himself, "Hey guys in a running thread, should I run?".

Of course you should.

It's probably still only 50/50 this race happens, so prepare yourself for another cancelation to manage expectations.

That said, this looks like a great race.  As I mentioned before, it was my #2 choice for my first marathon attempt (#1 was Houston).  A small slice of me wants to join you guys too, but I'm still suffering PTSD from the FBG Virtual Races, and have trouble getting motivated/excited for any street race since then.  Mountain races, on the other hand...

When all this Covid BS is up, definitely wanna head up to Canada and do a mountain ultra with you!

When you're counting/logging, what's your target daily calories just to maintain?
