Best Documentaries You've Seen ----> (2 Viewers)

A great crime doc I saw recently (on Netflix) is Cropsey.

Whoa.  Truly terrifying.  There's this old footage of Geraldo in the 70s exposing this state home for crazy children... and it's probably the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in my life.  Gosh :(

Anyway, it closed down, but the people that lived there never really left the area (Statin Island)... made for lots of urban legends and even a true crime story with a nice trial to follow.

Regarding China, nothing can be done about it by the government that isn't a regressive tax that hurts all Americans except for the ones who get manufacturing jobs out of it. Tariffs are essentially socialism.

The Z Channel is two interwoven stories:

A movie about movies, and the brilliant programmer who was both the "father" of TCM-type art/cult/foreign film cable broadcast platforms as well as critically reappraised director's cuts and restorations, but had a deeply troubled personal life, was haunted and tormented by, struggled with and ultimately succumbed to inner demons.

Not sure if it qualifies because it's a series, but Aerial America on The Smithsonian Channel is very well done. Descriptions of different parts and themes of the country from an aerial perspective.

Just saw a great documentary on The Palio: annual horse race run in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy in July and August. This documentary explains why this is not just another horse race. The movie is in Italian with English sub-titles.

This is just a personal thing and I realize it has little to no national appeal, but it is an excellent documentary and had me pretty emotional at times as most things recalling Katrina do.

"Big Charity: The Death of America's Oldest Hospital"

If anything I guess it shows the power of documentaries, how effective they can be.

The Terror Routes is the best documentary I've seen on 9/11 - actually on the 22 year lead up to it.

Watch this if you want a better understanding of the long-term development of terrorism and intelligence mistakes that culminated in 9/11.

Looking for some more documentaries that kids might like.  I'm trying to get my kids away from their 100% mindless programs.

Any suggestions?

Also to add... Watch "The Champions", hopefully its still on netflix.  It follows Mike Vick's dogs after their rescue.  Very good.

For kids, "A LEGO Brickumentary" for sure.

Netflix: Interview with a serial killer is interesting to say the least.  Worth watching if you are interested in that sort of thing.  Not the best documentary though.  Hard to stomach.

I am heading to the library to get some docs, and hadn't seen this thread before.  I will go through and suggest any that I didn't see mentioned.  Used to watch a ton, but have fallen off the last couple years.

Forgive me if some of these were mentioned, but I just did a super fast scan of the last few pages, so maybe I missed the mentions of some of these.  Here are a few off the top of my head:

Stevie   I have mentioned this one before.  This is the one that started my love for docs.  I took it home randomly after I bought the video store and was looking at the doc section we had.  Never really thought about watching them before so gave it a go.  It's by Steve James, director of Hoop Dreams

Hot Coffee - yes, the McDonald's lawsuit.  It will make you think, especially when you see the lady's injuries and hear what she was asking for.

Born into Brothels -  I had just been to India, so this one effected me a bit.

American Movie - 2 good old WI boys chase their dream - to make their horror movie Coven

Capturing the Friedmans -  surprised this hadn't been mentioned, but probably missed it.

Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles -  random one I had hear about from a podcast that fascinated me.

Jesus Camp - Just scary

Deliver Us from Evil - Again, just scary

Room 237 -  good not so much in that I buy into them, more just fascinated on the theories these wackos were coming up with about Kubrick and The Shining.

The Cove - a hard watch, but still great.

The Look of Silence - for those that saw The Act of Killing, Oppenheimer did a follow up too.

By far my favorite genre, as I never dislike any of the movies I see (besides the obvious skewed, one sided movies).  Glad I saw this thread to get me even more in the mood to get back in the habit of watching docs.
