Airlines serving in flight alcohol.....thoughts? (1 Viewer)

been seeing on the news what appears to be an uptick in drunken behavior on planes.  I witnessed this behavior recently on a rdu->lga flight, when a guy harrassed a young girl, was loud and obnoxious and was escorted off by police.  he drank prior to the flight, but likely would've continued.  given all the security issues and increasingly boorish behavior, wouldn't it be prudent that airlines cease serving alcohol in flight?  I don't understand the need, outside of financial gain, for this to continue.  I think the risks far outway the benefit of service.

just a rant.

I like to have a drink or two on a plane.....but the OP makes sense.  You drink while on a plane...there's nothing wrong with it. You drink while on a bus....people will look at you funny.

So true.. similarly, if I'm doing shots of Jameson at the bar at 8:30am people look at you like a drunk, but if that bar is an airport bar, it's completely okay.

Meh, I consider it a form of social Darwinism. If you're not enough of a human being to get through a flight without getting ####faced and disruptive, you should probably be sent to an island or something.

Never understood fear of flying. Of all the reasonable ways to die (so, in this case, we're excluding heart attack while on top of a super model), plane crash is way up near the top. Instant, no pain, family gets a big fat insurance payout.

I WAS FLYING TO AN ISLAND!!!

Seems to me that the issue rather letting drunk people on the plane in the first place. So maybe stopping to sell alcohol in airports would solve a lot of the issue...

It is the only thing that makes being shoe horned into a cigar tight cabin with the dregs of society tolerable--plain and simple.

Next you will suggest people don't drink at a baseball game.

Back in college I used to tell the flight attendants upon boarding that I was afraid to fly but Jack Daniels helped. More often than not they would deliver one to my seat before taxi. Those were the days...

You have a link to show said "uptick"?

Or perhaps this is another thing we're seeing more of since everybody has a camera I their pocket now.

I have a red eye tonight back to the mainland. It's going to be quite embarrassing when I get up to go pee and a bunch of mini liquor bottles go bouncing around the isle.  My goal is to not pass out with a drink in my hand and spill it on my neighbor as I did on my last flight a month ago.

I have flown a decent amount and have never seen an issue with a drunk. This includes countless flights to and from Vegas where one might expect more than average amount of drinkers on board.

I've been drinking on planes at all hours of the day for 20 years and haven't seen any noticeable change in the behavior of my fellow travelers. If anything, I would say that the overall rate has declined so that those of us who do it are more noticeable.

In line with cost reductions airlines have also become more uptight about it, particualrly on international flights - certainly in the back

Another case where substituting marijuana for alcohol would make everyone's experience that much better.  Pre-flight brownies for everyone.

Given the fact that flying is horrible in every way now alcohol is needed to get through most flights.  Plus it is almost impossible to get trashed on the airplane drinks unless you have a pint in your pants.

Right. The OP only talks about the problems alcohol have caused. What about the times alcohol defused a situation?
