2018 FBG Album Poll - 13th Annual (1 Viewer)

Link to last year's countdown

Tenative deadline is January 24th. If there aren't enough lists in by then, I will extend it but I'm away from the 26th to Feb 2nd, so the countdown needs to either go down the week before of after that.

Suggestions and discussion welcome in this thread. PMing lists to me is encouraged vs. posting them here, so there is some drama in the big reveal.

Rules
These are the rules we've used in the past, still work for everyone, or should we do some tinkering? The one thing that happens with the assigned points is one person can love an album, give it 30 points and it finds it's way into the midsection of the countdown. It puts an album "loved" by one person ahead of one that was "liked" by 3 or 4 people, which can be either a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it. Personally, I think it adds some diversity to the chart but maybe we should roll the max per album back to 25?

- You have 200 points to distribute as you see fit among 10 to 20 albums.
- No album can be given more than 30 points
- You can also simply post your top 10-20 albums in order and they will be awarded points in a descending order from 19-1.

- You must post at least 10 albums
- Any album consisting of new/previously unreleased material released in 2018 is eligible (No reissues, compilations must be all new material)
- Live Albums must have been recorded and released in 2018
- EP's are eligible
- You can post your album rankings/points assignments here or PM them to me (PMing them to me adds some mystery as to how the final results shake out, but if some people just want to post a top 10/20 list, that's fine too).
- The more participants the better
- Let's try to keep this near the top of the page for the next couple weeks.

EXAMPLE 1 - Points Assigned:

The Beatles - Abbey Road - 30
The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - 30

I'll try to put mine together this weekend and get it submitted.  Might try assigning points this year instead of the straight ranking.  I've got a handful of albums I REALLY love and dozens more I just enjoyed.

I'm excited to see what albums I missed.  One of my most listened to albums last year was Lucid by Clowns, which I didn't know even existed until participating in last years poll.

At any point in the last two months I had from 9-11 albums that could have been #2 on my list.  I would up narrowing it down to 8 or 9 depending on which way the wind was blowing... but after listening to it again this weekend I am pretty sure I picked the right one and that 3-10 on my list are now the interchangeable ones.

In! Consider this a placeholder and unranked working list from memory.

thanks for that steelcity! don't know most of those... I have a lot of listening to do.

marco- hookworms! love that album, and can't believe I forgot it. definitely into my 20. our tastes are pretty similar, but still a handful of others I don't know at all- more listening.

Didn't listen to a ton of quantity this year. Just kind of kept to stuff I figured I'd like. Looking forward to the list.

Spiritualized: And Nothing Hurt 30
This is an emotional album that hit during an emotional year for me. I lost my mother to cancer and this album reflected the profound loss and heartache I was experiencing and yet had a thread of hopefulness I could grasp onto. The video for “I’m your Man” encapsulates visually what this album sounds like; J. Spaceman traveling the American West in search of the grave of Gram Parsons. This album accomplished for me what I love most about music, it weaved itself into my memories.

No Age: Snares Like A Haircut 30
11 years since their release of Weirdo Rippers they finally made their masterpiece. Feels like they found a comfortable balance between experimentation and rock. Soft Collar Fad, Send Me, and Drippy are some of the best tunes they’ve written.

Iceage: Beyondless 30
Punk rock with violins and horns from Denmark doesn’t seem like it would work, but this one hit me in the gut from first listen. This album pulls off the rare feat of sounding familiar and groundbreaking at the same time. Pain Killer might be my favorite song of the year.

Ty Segall: Freedoms Goblin 30
Not as concise as last years “Ty Segall” album, but some great tracks on here. “And, Goodnight” is Ty channelling Neil in all his ragged glory. The Freedom Band is my favorite Ty line-up.

J. Mascis: Elastic Days 20
J. Mascis and Dino Jr. hold a special place in my heart. Dinosaur Jr.'s s/t first album was probably my first “indie” album I ever bought after hearing it spinning at my local record store. I’ve seen them live every time they come to town and both Dino Jr. and J.’s music are part of the soundtrack of my life. There is nothing new sounding here. J. being J. which is perfect. Like a pair of broken in Chuck Taylors, it just feels good.

Hookworms: Microshift 20
This is probably my favorite album of the year. At least I listened to it the most. I think it’s a genius combo of kraut /psychedelic rock and dance music. Just love everything about this release. BUT these guys went the way of The Orwells, another casualty in the #metoo era. The singer being accused of sexual and mental abuse by a friend of an old girlfriend made it impossible for the band to go on and they disbanded. It really got me thinking; should this matter? It really did for me. As much as I loved the album the allegations did taint the music for me which was interesting. The rumors of Zeppelin stuffing pieces of shark in a groupies cooz made them Gods of Rock back in their day and I never once allowed those stories effect my enjoyment of their musical output, but the pudgy guy from Leeds "allegedly" being an ####### and creeper didn’t work for me. Still a great record and one of my few vinyl purchases this year.

Salad Boys: This Is Glue 10
I think this was a Nigel Tufnel recommendation. I’m drawn to New Zealand rock music, and this release totally worked for me. Sure, they sound a lot like fellow Kiwi legends The Clean which makes me dig them, but there is something more to their sound. They do a good job fluctuating between quiet and rock and incorporate a jangly American sound like maybe the Feelies? It’s a joyful sounding record with a dark lyrical side. Love it.

Jeff Tweedy: Warm 10
Tweedy is one of my favorite modern singer/songwriters and this may be his best solo output. Feel lucky to live in his hometown and catch a lot of Wilco/Tweedy shows around the midwest. Released later in the year I haven’t spent as much time with this as other albums. My wife gave the the LP for Christmas and it sounds great on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee.

Courtney Barnett: Tell Me How You Really Feel 10
Seems like this album was either received as a disappointment or overlooked. Not as great as Sometimes I Sit and Think…..but a respectable next album that is a bit less quirky and more serious, which I think is a good path for her to follow.

Lala Lala: The Lamb 5
Living in a diverse musical city like Chicago it is hard to keep up with all the bands. I never heard of this band before I saw them open for Courtney Barnett last year. Lyrically dark and well written by London native Lillie West, Lala Lala sounds a bit familiar to me, like a radio tuned to an indie pop station in the early 90’s.

Parquet Courts: Wide Awake! 5
This is probably too low. Wide Awake is a great tune, so is Total Football and Freebird II also surprisingly works for me. Why so low? I have no idea. Overall I just didn’t find myself going back to the album much. More songs don't work than do for me. I think it all seems a bit disjointed sonically and never finds it’s groove as a collection of songs. Individually these are some of their best, but they’re still working toward a cohesive masterpiece album IMO. Still a great recording by a band who has come a long way in a short period of time.

had previuosly heard and really liked the first track, destroyer, but hadn't playlisted it and hadn't heard anything else of theirs.

that's a great album- I think I prefer it to Barnett's new one. I'm having the opposite problem as you- this has been one of my favorite years for music in a long time... bunch of albums I love, way more I really like (this one getting added to that latter list at the very least).

love this thread.

okeedoke... tougher even than normal this year to get it to 20, even though the top 10 or so were pretty easy (been tougher to get there most years). I put them in tiers... today's tiers, tomorrow's tears. pretty sure 10-42 are interchangeable for me on a given day.

Bumping as a reminder to self and others. Also to add Iceage to my working list, definite top 10er for me.
was top 10 for me most of the year. but the last couple weeks (and at other times as well), I just coudln't take his voice. really great album though. that and f-ed up were hard to leave off- both genuinely fantastic albums where if I was in the right frame of mind for the singing, they'd be near the top... and that's from an IDLES fan.

OK my ranked list for public release @Northern Voice. Went with 10 to keep it tight but also because I’m more of a singles and playlist listener these days and haven’t done enough albums justice to rank more. I discovered a lot of these albums here, including my top 2 (in the mid-year drafts), which are by far my most-played albums of the year.

1. Shame - Songs of Praise

2. The Beths - Future Me Hates Me

3. Superchunk - What a Time to be Alive

4. The Internet - Hive Mind

5. ####ed Up - Dose Your Dreams

6. Iceage - Beyondless

7. Kali Uchis - Isolation

8. Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!

9. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Hope Downs

10. Anderson .Paak - Oxnard

**

one major glaring obvious omission, given that list. hint- it's the one floppinho DIDN'T sing on.

Definitely dig IDLES but they just missed my top 10. I just found their album a little same-y (apart from a couple standout songs), moreso than some of the other aggressive rock I enjoyed this year. Same with Hot Snakes. And I’d put both ‘Danny Ndelko’ and ‘Six Wave Hold Down’ in my top 10 songs of the year.

Here's my **Official** ranking.  Went with the Points instead of the straight ranking so I could "tier" things.

It was the NPR guy's album of the year.
listening now... so far after 3 songs it's kinda ez-listening drek, tbh. sorry eph and npr. the vulnerability/depth of her voice feels lost here, and the song writing is pretty dull- but hopefully it takes a turn for the better.

It was a better year for music than for albums

funny I rated your #1 the same and then we have nothing else in common

you know they are opening for coheed on their upcoming tour?  interested to see how that goes down

I didn't listen to a lot of stuff but:

1. Deafheaven - best metal-whatever-you-call-this record in MANY years.  Love this record.

2. The 1975 - Very much like Vampire Weekend a few years ago that was so well received, I really like this record but don't think it's my favorite kind of music.

3. Kasey Musgraves

finally got going for me. except it had moved onto the next album in spotify's list- solos and collaborations from 82-15
