Why was VAR not used here?Β  That seems tailored made for a look on the screen from the ref based on the various angles.
Reports seem to indicate VAR confirmed.Β  Plus English refs don't go to the monitors.

And its Michael Oliver, the worst ref in England making sure he get the same designation in the Euros

Sliding two footed tackle with studs up and scissoring the leg as well? Always a red, no matter intent or if he gets ball first. They don't want those out of control tackles.Β

Pretty straight forward call, IMO. And yes, I know, back in the day....

Is this really overall consensus? I like Oliver and think he does a solid, consistent jobΒ

But this isn't what happened.

Defender slides and kicks the ball, trailing leg catches the attacker's foot.Β  Studs do not touch the attacker and aren't "Up".Β

Another great tackle wrongly called as a foul.

And it seems VAR didn't intervene

Since he and Anthony Taylor are at the Euros, whoever matters thinks he's the best.Β  He's improved since he allowed Joe Hart to headbutt him without giving him a card and showed Di Maria red for tugging his shirt.Β  But he always looks overwhelmed and easily influenced to me.Β

This feels like the targeting debates in American football.

I'm not a soccer guy, but I do ref college football and HS basketball.

I don't get the sense of the bolded at all.

Oh the College Football ones that get guys ejected?

Seems no one likes those calls either.Β  Don't watch a lot of CFL so I can't comment other then the comments online.
Yup.Β  Game changing calls that are forced on the refs with poorly defined rules that require a lot of subjective decision making (which leads to inconsistency and arguments).

I have no idea what you were watching. I just screen recorded it and will post in a moment. Not only does he not even get ball first, it's not close.

Appreciate the opinion.Β  Every time i see him ref he's blowing big calls.Β  And several of my friends who support other teams often have issues with him.

But all English refs suck, so its a low bar to being the best of the worstΒ  :lmao:

I've watched it several times Here

He most defintely plays the ball first
This is such a bizarre conversation to me. When I described what happened above, you said that's not what happened.

I said it was a:

1) sliding...

2) two-footed tackle

3) Studs up

4) Didn't get to the ball first

Can you explain to me which of the above you disagree with on the link you posted?

2, 3, & 4

2: He swung his right leg and played the ball, his left leg, dragged behind is what caught the Spanish player

3: Studs never caught anyone and were where you would expect for someone kicking a ball while sliding

4: Got the ball first

Only after the Spanish player (Moreno?) played it first.Β
Β

It did not have to be red, but it’s not a clear and obvious error.Β
True.Β  But Frueler still played the ball before getting the Spanish Player.

If he had gone to the monitor he might have thought it was.Β  Although the discussion here may also mean it isn't clear and obviousΒ  :lmao:

@Sinn Fein would you rather face Switzerland or Spain if we get through later today?
Switzerland Β Β
Β

But there are several who are bigger supporters of Italy than me and they might have a different opinion.Β
Β

I think Italy would be prohibitive favorites against either (as would Belgium).Β

Of course stills make it look worse.

Swiss player plays the ball before getting the Spanish player = playing the ball first. As in playing the ball prior to the man, not who played the ball first.

Hard to tell if the studs make contact on the freezeframe.Β  From the video he is swinging his leg to play the ball and if he does catch him its minimal.Β  Maybe I am wrong

Getting caught between his legs as the bottom catches you does not make it a scissor, esp when his right leg is swinging away from the Spanish player.Β  A Scissor is when you swing both legs through the player from opp sides.Β  But maybe its symantics on this to.Β

And maybe its my old school views on tackles....

With that, seems the ref agrees with you.Β  So nothing we can do but disagreeΒ  :suds:
