Bucs already have V-Jax though, the player I think is the best size/speed comp to Evans.

Agreed. Would it be a killer duo? Sure, but Im not so sure having the exact same WR on each size makes sense, as good as those WRs may be. Not to mention, TB has plenty of holes.

Id still say either way, Evans is gone by our pick, but you never know.

I'm just rooting for QBs to go early and often. Hoping teams in the top 10 (Jags, Browns, Raiders, Vikes come to mind) all panic and grab QBs in the first.

Steelers pre-draft visitors today:

Jordan Zumwalt (LB, UCLA) Ryan Shazier (LB, Ohio State) Deone Bucannon (S, Washington State)

So, if we're looking at guys we'd be happy to get in round 1 at need positions, where do you all come down on the following prospects :

WR : Watkins, Evans

TE : Ebron (I don't see TE as a 1st round need position, but Ebron would function like Graham in NO as a de-facto WR)

OT : Matthews, Robinson, Lewan

DL : ????

LB : Clowney, Barr, Mack, Mosley

CB : Dennard, Gilbert

That's 12 guys. If Bortles, Bridgewater, and Manziel all go in the top 14 (pleasepleaseplease) then at least one of these guys is available at 15. Of course there are guys at need spots like Hageman, Tuitt, Nix, arguably Ha-Ha, but those are guys I believe would either be reaches or are at a position addressed in FA and likely to be de-prioritized (Dix.) Also a few other "eye of the beholder" receivers like Lee, Benjamin, or Beckham Jr.

So, who among this group do you like/dislike?

Going to give this a shot

Pittsburgh Steelers:

1. Mike Munchak hired - Why it matters: Last year was another disappointing year from the Steelers, and most seem to believe that the qualms started in Week 1 when Maurkice Pouncey went down with a season ending knee injury vs. Tennessee on a poorly executed zone block by David DeCastro. The Steelers, still reeling from the loss of OL Coach Sean Kugler to UTEP, relied on Jack Bicknell Jr. from KC to revamp the OL and get the Steelers back to running the ball w/ authority and blocking Ben. The line, however, was a mess for most of the year (assist. line coach Shaun Sarrett allegedly took over the coaching reigns of the OL), and while injuries played a part in the letdown, the line was chiefly the reason why the Steelers opened up with a poor record in a # of games they simply could've won. Enter Mike Munchak. Munchak has a stellar reputation around the league as an excellent teacher and technician of the OL. When you couple that with a very young OL of high pedigree (several 1st and 2nd rounders), if Munchak can get these guys to play to their potential and properly teach them how to be an OL in the NFL, then the Steelers will be in EXCELLENT shape offensively. They would be able reap the benefits of a power running game behind Bell/Blount and Ben leading the aerial assault in the prime of his career. The Steelers also now boast having 3 assistants on it's coaching staff with head coaching experience, which could be good from a leadership standpoint (Todd Haley - KC, **** LeBeau - CIN, Mike Munchak - TEN).

2. Jason Worlids resigned/tagged - Why it matters: The Steelers are putting alot of faith in Jason Worlid's #s from 2013, and hoping he is the antidote to the pass rush questions the Steelers have had in recent years. They let go of all-pro, but oft-injured LB LaMarr Woodley - who was still putting up good #'s when healthy. The Stelers are betting alot of $ that a somewhat unproven commodity in Worlids (who isnt exactly the picture of good health either) can continue his breakout and be the next in line of dominant LBs to be produced by Pittsburgh. They'd better hope they are right, because the depth behind Jarvis Jones and Worlids is quite bare and a step back for Worlids and/or Jones could be quite devastating in the short/long term.

3. Free Agent Bonanza - Why it matters: The Steelers are notorious for standing pat in Free Agency until after the draft/training camp to fill in depth behind established veterans. However, in the past few years due to age/salary cap restraints there has been a bloodletting of veterans, especially on defense, for the Steelers and an infusion of talent was very much needed. While most fans thought the Steelers would address this in typical fashion via the draft, the Steelers made somewhat of a splash signing a veteran S on the first day (S Mike Mitchell - CAR) and adding a host of other veterans to bolster their depth on both sides of the ball: those signings were WR Lance Moore (NO), NT/DE Cam Thomas (SD), RB Legarrette Blount (NE), LB Arthur Moats (BUF), among others. The Steelers may not be done adding talent either, as DE/LB/WR are areas that are still thin even after signing all of these players; despite the voids, the Steelers will wait until atleast after the draft to see what positions need a few more bodies added.

Steelers Pre-Draft Visitors for Today: Bradley Roby (CB, Ohio State); Kevin Pierre-Louis (LB, Boston College); Carl Bradford (LB, Arizona State)

Has Nix's stock dropped that far?

I love Ebron as an option and agree he has Graham upside potential. Lewan and Mosely are a slight reach.

This is not going help when the Steelers try to re-sign Pouncey next year -

The Jacksonville Jaguars officially signed transition-tagged Cleveland Browns cente Alex Mack to a $42 offer sheet Friday and the numbers are eyepopping according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

It includes $26 million guaranteed, an opt-out clause after 2015, and a no-trade provision. The deal will pay Mack $10 million in 2014 and $8 million in each of the four seasons after. The $8.4 million annual average makes Mack the league's highest-paid center, just ahead of Ryan Kalil. The $26 million guaranteed is $7 million more than Kalil got from Carolina. Most observers expect the Browns to match the offer sheet and retain Mack but it is going to cost them a boatload of cash.

I've seen both Lewan and Mosley mocked in the top 10 frequently, but never seen Nix above #15 and a few mocks that have him in round 2.

Eh, I dunno know. Browns have a ton of cap space, makes sense to give him a long term deal and maybe even overpay a litte.

I wouldnt be stunned in Pouncey is gone depending on the market next yr and how he does this year. He hasnt looked like the same guy since his rookie year, and without knowing what he does this year, Im guessing he ends up being overpaid.

Colbert has stated on several occasions that this is a deep WR class so I don't see us reaching for beckham in the first. With glaring needs, imo, at corner and at NT, I anticipate two picks on the defensive side of the ball and then the now-cliched 3rd round WR. I like Keith McGill and Justin Ellis, myself, and neither are slated to go as high as 15 so I'll go out on a limb and say the steelers trade down out of round 1 in order to get an extra pick or two and take those two defenders in round two.

I liked it, pretty well wriiten.

Thought I'd leave this link (off season hype, I know):

Munchak on why he chose the Steelers

...

“A lot of it is about timing,” said Munchak. “I was available, and the Steelers had an opening at the same time. Pittsburgh itself for me is more Pennsylvania, and being from Pennsylvania I have a lot of family and friends who live in this part of the country. That was a huge plus for me. And then football-wise, there is the tradition. The Steelers’ tradition is something that I’ve competed against for many, many years. As a player (for the Houston Oilers), we were in the same division. I got to see first-hand what it was like, the success Pittsburgh has had over the years, year-in and year-out, always a team everyone wants to beat. I really liked that. I’m big into tradition, I think it’s important, and I was curious to see what it was all about and what it was like. To be part of that now, just getting my feet wet, (I’m) excited about the opportunity.”

Agreed. While this certainly will hike up the going rate for a center, I doubt the Steelers are going to be offering Pouncey a contract in the same ballpark as Mack. It may mean the end of Pouncey in black and gold but aside from his rookie year he has been a bit of a disappointment.

Don't get me wrong, I still like Pouncey but if it came down to him at $8-$10 million a year or a guy like Fernando Velasco at league minimum, I know which direction I would like the Steelers to go.

Draft prospects visits for Steelers today: Scott Chrchton, LB, Oregon State; Shaquille Richardson, CB Arizona; Jason Verrett, CB, TCU

I could not have made three more pertinent comments if I tried. Nicely done.

Steelers shouldn't have a shot at...Clowney, Mack, Matthews, Robinson, Watkins

Unlikely...Barr

And I'll be shocked if Chicago doesn't take a defensive lineman (Donald, Jernigan, Ealy). So that's likely 7 guys gone.

Tampa seems to be the best fit for Evans. I have a hard time believing Lovie Smith won't draft a defensive player with that pick though.

I like Lewan and would take him, but can't see him getting past the Giants. I'm a fan of Evans but the receiver group is too deep to overlook a top tackle. And for that reason I may take a corner (Dennard, Gilbert) over Evans. I'm not sure how deep the corner group is.

That's 11 guys. After that...I think 15 is too high for Mosely, 7-10 picks later for me. I need to do more research on the two safties, but that may be where I'd go next.

As you said Ebron is a luxury pick and I don't see them having that luxury. But if all the other guys are gone and he's by far the best player left, it's an easy choice.

Other guys I'd look at...Can Jernigan play end is a 3-4? Is Cyrus Kouandjio healthy and is he good enough to warrant a pick at 15?

Nix is the other guy they would have to consider, but not a guy I currently want.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I think EG was just showing that someone on that list is going to be the Steelers pick more than likely, and he just listed every consensus top 15 pick (other than QBs).

I have a feeling we either catch a falling star (Gilbert/Evans) at 15 or we trade down and try and pick up a few extra picks and select a CB like Darqueze Dennard, Bradley Roby, Jason Verrett or a WR like Odell Beckman, Marquise Lee or Bruce Ellington later in the 1st that we acquire.

yeah, I didn't phrase the beginning of my post appropriately. I was trying to expound upon what he had there not critique. Also wanted give my thoughts on what they might do and hopefully get some insight from others on some players.

Per Bouchette:

Steelers visitors today: DT Ra'Shede Hageman of Minn, CB Phillip Gaines of Rice. TE Rob Blanchflower of UMass

Mike Evans seems like a perfect fit for this offense. He played backyard ball with Manziel at A&M; he would mesh quite well with Ben, a master at keeping the play alive. And our qb has been asking for a big WR ever since Plaxico left.

Everybody says that Evans'll be gone before the the Steelers first selection. With a lot of picks, maybe this is a year to trade up.

I would rather see a trade down.

Yep. They don't really have a lot of picks since they traded away the 3rd rounder last year and they need every one they have...and some. If they could trade down and get an extra 2nd or 3rd that would be optimal.

Where is Jordan Mathews being mocked? Bigger wr with lots of receptions, Jerry rice's cousin, smart, 4.4 at combine, football junkie.
Early to late 2nd. For me I'm really hoping Dennard in the 1st and Matthews in the 2nd.
I concur.
Kiper just put him at #30 overall to the 9ers.
I don't have Insider so haven't seen his latest but what I have seen of individual picks leads to some head scratching.

They were awarded 3 comp picks. Minus the third rounder they traded last season, they have a total of 9 selections in 2014.

Translation: they have a lot of picks.

They only traded up to get Shamarko in the first place because they expected to get the comps.

I'm well aware of what they were awarded in compensation. Nine is not "a lot" of picks especially when the bulk of the picks are 4th and later picks. I count the 3rd round comp pick as essentially a 4th rounder.

No sense in arguing about what "a lot" means.

You're probably right anyway because teams can't trade their comp picks. The Steelers likely won't pick before #15.

Interesting(?)...read earlier that Pete Prisco feels/heard that Fuller and Roby would be the 1st 2 CBs taken and now I see his mock doesn't have Dennard in the 1st round. Not buying it.

Steelers exercise option on Heyward

Not familiar with the new option on players drafted in the first round. Can the Steelers negotiate a new contract with Heyward after June 1st? Any effects on the cap this year?
No cap impact this year at all for exercising the option. Just means that Heyward cannot become a UFA until after the 2015 season but the Steelers can also try to negotiate a new contract with heyward. If they cannot comes to terms on a contract then Heyward gets paid the average of the 4th through the 25th highest salaries paid to DE's for the 2015 season.

Excerpt from Peter King's MMQB:

Pittsburgh likes Odell Beckham and Brandin Cooks at wide receiver, and one or both should be there at No. 15 if that’s the direction the Steelers go—and they need to replenish the position after losing two receivers in free agency in two years. (I’d go corner if I were GM Kevin Colbert.)
