Jordan Zumwalt, ILB/OLB, UCLA

Height: 6-4. Weight: 230.

40 Time: 4.76.

Projected Round (2014): 3-5.

5/5/14: Zumwalt has a number of teams interested in him in the mid-rounds. He played well for the Bruins in 2013. Zumwalt helped himself and was a tough defender in the tackle box. He played extremely well against Virginia Tech in the bowl game with 10 tackles an interception. The senior finished the year with 93 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles and two interceptions. Zumwalt was solid at the East-West Shrine, but wasn't impressive at the Combine.

04/29/14 - Five players who should be on Pittsburgh's draft radar: LB Jordan Zumwalt, UCLA: Inside linebacker won't be listed as the top need on any lists out there, but in the mid-to-late rounds, Zumwalt has the intensity and versatility that screams Steelers. He has experience playing inside and outside and would provide depth at several linebacker spots for Pittsburgh. Zumwalt plays fast, active and aggressive, but also stiff and is more of a straight-line athlete who struggles to easily redirect. He has an intense on-field demeanor and to describe him as "violent" would be an understatement, but he also comes with durability concerns due to his physical play style. I would not be surprised if DHB ends up cut. 4th and/or 5th wr needs to contribute on special teams. Put Moye in his place.

This is true, but it's actually why DHB may make the team. He's was, surprisingly, quite good as a gunner for Indy.

DHB was great on teams for Indy last year. Moye and Bryant are somewhat redundant, IMO. Speaking of teams, Zumwalt will get a lot of time on coverage units early on. He has the demeanor to be a ST superstar and can back up multiple spots in the LB corps. Last two picks are both versatile players with multi-positional functionality.

Possible. They could use another pass rusher. Wouldn't be surprised to see a TE either depending on where they believe value is. Maybe Michael Sam?

I like this pick. When they passed on Nix, I thought maybe they felt they were set at NT, but this cat is enormous and has starting NT potential. Needs technique work, but you can't coach someone to 6'7 and 355 lbs. He's very limited as a pass rusher and has no mobility, but can potentially occupy two blockers. Solid 2 down and prospect.

I think he actually might be a 3-4 DE. I wonder about being that tall on the nose.

 
I've been thinking they may go after McCullers every round since the third. Clearly, since everyone is passing on him, he must have "flunked" something in interviews.

That said, what amounts to a 7th rounder? Yes please. I'm a peripheral Vols "fan"(sister looooves them, so I have to hear about 'em so much I just sort of pay attention to them) and have to say....for a guy 350, I don't see the "conditioning issues." He's pretty lean. I think he's got good 2-gap potential, but he's going to need help harnessing it. Hopefully Mitch can get through to him, regardless of whether he's a 0-tech or a 5-tech.

Hell, I'd put him at NG just to force QBs to try and pass over him.

Reynolds would be a pretty nice get for a 7th. At this stage of the draft, any guy you can get who has a shred of a chance to make the team should be looked at as a "win." I think Reynolds would at least fit that bill. He's talented enough to push for a spot.

Optimists seem to like to invoke the name of Shaun Rogers, but I'm not sure I see that kind of disruptive potential. But if he can get coached into staying low enough to be an effective zero-tech, he could be a real space eater. You'd have to be happy with that for the price of the investment. I don't see a lot of downside.

And he does seem to carry his 350 well enough. I think the conditioning thing crops up because he's not a consistent effort guy. But also because he apparently balloons back up to around 400 from time to time.

 
I've seen every game Zumwalt played in college. His performance under Jim Mora was night and day different from under Neuheisel. He was stronger, fiercer, more aggressive, made better tackles. Shows you what a real coach can do. I think he might be a steal.

Basically just a decent all-around depth TE type prospect. Nothing earth shattering. Can catch a little, can block pretty okay. Decent size for short-area work around the EZ. Probably never becomes anything more than a good depth option, but probably worth a try. Round 7. If he fails, he's cut and no big deal.

I love the Bryant pick, didnt realize he was that fast. That pick in itself makes the Steelers look like geniuses for not going WR in the 2nd rd to a degree.

The rest today I dont know much about. I swear I thought Zumwalt was a guy who was supposed to go like early today 4th round-ish so like what Ive read here and elsewhere, and same with McCullers.

Without making any trades and not legit having a 3rd round pick this year, I think we had a really good draft.

Love this pick. My favorite pick of the draft for them and one of the best values of the draft IMO.
 
Steelers admit that Tuitt did not play well last year at Notre Dame.

He played as a sophomore and had 11 sacks and was 308. Had hernia and played junior year at 335.

DLine coach John Mitchell said if he had been healthy (and repeated) he would have possibly been top 10 overall. Couldnt/didnt run at combine and proday.

In Atlanta, when Steelers worked him out, he was already down to 315.
