10 team draft last night was bonkers (1 Viewer)

i'm the one that got turned upside down on my face. keep in mind this is a 10 Team NON Ppr league that starts 3 Wr's.

I drafted 10th and had every intention of going wr-wr. 3 wr's went off board before my pick! AJ went 6th, CJ 7th and Roddy White 9th. Forced me to change up my strategy and draft Mendenhall and Fitzgerald. 3rd and 4th roudn i grabbed Santonio and Dez Bryant.

By the 5th round every team had a QB, so i decided to wait and grab Stafford in the 7th instead of the 6th. Bam idiot before me grabs a backup QB in the 7th round of a 10 team league. Instead of going wr heavy as i planned, i ended up going RB heavy.

Its amazing how you can plan and research and plan and research and then with some goofy as* picks, everything gets thrown out the window.

Bradford

Mendenhall

Beanie Wells

hightower

Tate

Ingram

Sproles

Redman

Fitzgerald

Holmes

Dez

Jordy Nelson

Aaron Hernandez

Why wouldnt you go Fitz and Nicks?
Without knowing everyone taken, I would have gone Mendy over Nicks there. But yeah, 10 team leagues and under I go WR heavy. The dropoff in WRs is much higher, I finally clicked a number of years ago when I would scour the waiver wire for WRs and never seem to get one and there were always decent RBs QBs and TEs availabe. I've gone WR heavy since and always in contention.I did a draft for my neighbor who is a flight attendant vs 9 other chick flight attendants. I expected to dominate, they either know what they are doing or had their dudes do if for them like I was doing for my neighbor. Anyway, non ppr, I took Andre Johnson at 1.2 and Calvin Johnson at 2.09. We'll see what happens.I my 8 team old bud league, took Andre Johnson at 1.07 and Calvin 2.02. Got VJax at 3.07, I know crazy. Still ended up with some good rbs.

If you plan and research properly, "goofy as* picks" by other owners should be a good thing. It doesn't sound like you planned properly at all, you just came up with a plan for how you wanted the draft to go, and when it didn't go that way you got totally flustered. That never happens with proper preparation. For example, start at the top: I have no idea why you sound so shocked that the top three WRs went in the first nine picks. That's not outrageous for a league that starts 3 WRs. It shouldn't have "forced you to change up your strategy," you should have already been prepared for that possibility.

I was and my backup backup plan was if Mendenahll was still there, i pair him up with Fitzgerald. Which is what i did.

The bolded all indicate that right off the bat you were thrown off your game when the draft didn't go the way you expected it to:

For a ten-team, start-3-WR leauge, your team looks pretty weak. And I'm guessing that's because you got messed up when the draft didn't go the way you "planned." If everyone had a starting QB by round 5 you should have a better corps of RB/WR imo.

So...you planned on going WR-WR in non-PPR...3 WR's went in the 1st round before you, leaving RB value in a non-PPR league on the board...and you still loaded up on 3 WR's out of your first 4 picks.

Or, drafting AJ at 1.2 in a non-PPR league is just a horrible idea. Maybe they didn't know what they were doing...maybe you were just drafting at the level of "chick flight attendants".

Alright. Everyone's got an opinion. I was team 10. What would YOU havd done differently?

If I understand "upsidedown drafting" properly, isn't it best applied in PPR leagues, thus increasing the value of WRs?
I'm fine with hijacking this thread to steer it away from being straight RMT....I don't find WR-WR to be a significantly worse strategy in non-PPR except for real beginner leagues. In PPR, everyone else moves WRs up their rankings too so the WR available are a notch below the WR you can start with in non-PPR leagues. Said another way, I would just assume start AJ/White in non-PPR as I would Fitz/Nicks in PPR. The problem with the OP's attempt at upside down drafting is that it was non-PPR and WR still flew off the board as if it was PPR. When this happens, you can't just blindly go WR-WR anyway. To be honest, I don't think Mendy/Fitz is a bad start drafting from that spot. Maybe I'm just higher on those 2 particular players than most though which has very little to do with the strategy.

To this day I dont understand going into any draft with a static strategy.

Upside down my cornhole... Draft who is available that you WANT, that you have projected to domestically abuse his opponents.

THAT's a winning strategy

Draft a team YOU WANT as opposed to a team you SETTLED FOR.

Response to the draft now being posted... Again I think the draft is fine. Tate was a mistake when you needed QB options like Eli or WR options like Burleson though. It was a luxury pick by a team that still had holes. I probably go Finley over Hightower assuming TE required. You will find 2 starters out of Mendy, Wells, Ingram anyway. Your core is fine though.

BTW, the 10th spot kinda sucks in a 10 team league no matter what you do.

Alright. Everyone's got an opinion. I was team 10. What would YOU havd done differently?

this.

You'll regret Santonio at #30 overall. Way too early, IMO. Like the first 2 picks. Would have gone Finley in the 6th, and Blount or Romo instead of Santonio at #30 overall

1.10/2.01 - Mendenhall, McCoy, Vick, DMC are all legit choices. 3.10/4.01 - Dez, Gates, Bradshaw, Dwill5.10/6.01 - Hightower, Ingram (good picks), Finley7.10/8.01 - Beanie (good pick)Given that it's non-PPR, if you want to go upside down, you might do better to take an Elite QB, RB, Elite TE (Gates b/c of the TDs), and another RB or WR in the first four. Upside down doesn't have to mean going all WRs early, it just means not going RBs early. Taking WRs early doesn't make sense in this format unless you're targeting TD catching studs, i.e. Calvin/Nicks wouldn't be bad, but given that Calvin was gone I would probably have gone Mendenhall/Vick, Gates/Dwill, Ingram/WR. WRs just don't matter in non-PPR leagues.ETA - for contrast, I did this in a .5 PPR, ten-team, 2-3-1-felx league last night, but modified to get some RBs I really like in the mid-rounds. Ended with: QB - Matt Ryan (7)RB - Felix (3) , Ingram (5), Wells (6), Tate (11)WR - Calvin (1), Roddy (2), Santana Moss (8), Julio Jones (9), Lee Evans (10), Nate Burlson (12), Antonio Brown (14)TE - Gates (4), Hernandez (13)I would take that team heads up against yours in any format.

Holmes pick was too high, but you can recover. Looks like 6th round had plenty of good WRs. How many RBs do you start? Maybe Hightower was too high that you missed out on players in that round. Your team isnt too bad besides the Holmes pick

There's a pretty good lesson inside of this mess:

Know what an upside down draft is, and how to properly execute it (among others), but don't go into a draft with a set strategy when you have a late pick. You're asking for disaster to happen.

I did a draft for my neighbor who is a flight attendant vs 9 other chick flight attendants. I expected to dominate, they either know what they are doing or had their dudes do if for them like I was doing for my neighbor. Anyway, non ppr, I took Andre Johnson at 1.2 and Calvin Johnson at 2.09. We'll see what happens.
Or, drafting AJ at 1.2 in a non-PPR league is just a horrible idea. Maybe they didn't know what they were doing...maybe you were just drafting at the level of "chick flight attendants".
Possibly, I struggled with that 2nd pick big time. The lady got killed last year and took a lot of trash talk from her fellow chick league mates, I started helping her at around week 14 last year, and obviously a lost cause. I didn't want to take AJ that early. But in my opinion the value was right, the only other pick I truly wanted was AP and he was picked first. I wish she didn't have the 2nd pick. I do truly believe I made a sound choice as to me WRs are more valuable in a less than 12 team league, especially this day and age of RBBCs and constant flow of injuries, waiver wire QB/RB/TE are easier to come by than WRs and it is only a 15 player roster with 10 teams. Here is her team i drafted:QB Matt Schaub (Hou - QB)WR Andre Johnson (Hou - WR)WR Calvin Johnson (Det - WR)WR Percy Harvin (Min - WR)RB Steven Jackson (StL - RB)RB DeAngelo Williams (Car - RB)TE Antonio Gates (SD - TE)K Alex Henery (Phi - K)DEF New Orleans (NO - DEF)QB- StaffordRBs- Forte, BestWRs- AJ Green, Hines WardTE - KendricksThere was a big run at WR, I thought I would start a TE run with Gates that didn't materialize right away, more WRs taken.I feel good about her RBs especially since I didn't take one until the 3rd. The WR run really caught me off guard.Rate my team has it:
Bottom line: With great inseason management, we think you have about a 90 percent chance of making the playoffs. With good inseason management, we think you have about a 85 percent chance of making the playoffs. With average inseason management, we think you have a 77 percent chance of making the playoffs.
So there.I asked her opinion and she didn't know who AJ and CJ were and said do what I thought was best. Sometimes you have to go against conventional wisdom, fight it hard at times, and go with your brain. :banned:

You should have taken Fitz and Nicks on the turn.I'd also rather about 3 or 4 other RB's right there over Mendy, for one McFadden. You guys let somebody draft CJ2, Nicks, and McFadden. I probably also would have went Gates over Santonio or Dez. Also like Tampa Mike better than those two WR's. And then you picked Tim Hightower over Jermichael Finley, Jason Witten, Brandon Lloyd, and Steve Johnson. Sweet merciful lord, why would you do that? Picking Ben Tate also seems like a wasted pick since you don't have Foster, I would have gone with Eli or Pierre since you have Ingram.

Other than that, great draft

In 10 team draft as I already stated. I like to go top WR heavy. I don't like Nicks value now. I am high on Mendy. I would picked the same there with a struggle between Mendy and VJax.

I think you did well but i ended up in similar drafts with similar rosters. Guess we'll find out. The whole shebang really revolves around if guys like Ingram and Hightower pan out (I grabbed Felix a lot too). If they play top 10 ball the advantage in WRs should be the winning edge. Course you need guys like Bradford and Stafford to click as well- but they are much easier to replace with another hot hand on the waiver wire if they dont produce compared to running backs. I'm happy with the strategy so far but we shall see.

I'm high on Holmes and Dez so I don't really care that people think Brandon Lloyd and Mike Williams were the better play there. Thats splitting hairs imo and being a slave to rankings. they are all grouped together. As you stated, my struggle and in hindsight wish i would have maybe taken Vjax instead of Mendy.

What is this nonsense that you can't go WR-WR in a non-ppr and that receivers don't matter in PPR? Non-ppr just closes the gap between the backs that have 60+ reception potential and the backs that might not catch 10 balls or the receivers that catch 100 balls and the ones that catch 60-70 that have big play ability. As long as you have to start receivers, they sure as hell matter.

I suspect the gap between start 2WR and 3WR is more important than the PPR gap. I agree that PPR really shuffles the Running Back deck and diminishes QBs vs other positions than it pumps up WR numbers. Could be wrong, but thats my gut instinct.

If I take a RB in the first round of a 10 team draft, he better average higher than 3.9 ypc. Rashard's game logs from last year are far from impressive
Why? I see it the other way around personally. He's going to get huge touches on a SB contender again this year pretty much no matter how well he plays. Last year, it only took a 3.9 ypc to put up good numbers. That is pretty much his floor IMO. There is a ton of room for growth from his performance.

In 10 team draft as I already stated. I like to go top WR heavy. I don't like Nicks value now. I am high on Mendy. I would picked the same there with a struggle between Mendy and VJax.

I'm high on Holmes and Dez so I don't really care that people think Brandon Lloyd and Mike Williams were the better play there. Not sure what's not too like about Nicks, especially over a guy like Mendenhall. Vjax would have also been acceptable. I think Mike Williams is a much better option over Holmes and Dez in 2011. But I guess its personal preference. Why Hightower over all those elite guys still left though?

Eli has looked like carp pretty much sums it up for me.

With no flex spots, PPR doesn't impact the value of WRs vs RBs a significant amount. Positional value is generated by variation of tiers and available production WITHIN a position. If you start, for instance 2RB/3WR in a nonPPR - the only way your ranking should change in a PPR is that different WRs move up and down. Welker up a bit, Mike Wallace down a bit, for instance.PPR or not should have ZERO bearing on viability of an "upside down" draft.

There's a pretty good lesson inside of this mess:Know what an upside down draft is, and how to properly execute it (among others), but don't go into a draft with a set strategy when you have a late pick. You're asking for disaster to happen.
good words of wisdom
Agreed. Going in with a set strategy is awful. Do your prep work, map out a few different directions, and see what comes to you.

Well I wanted 2 wr out of Calvin, aj and fitz. Aj and cj were gone so I went with fitz and a rb. My strategy changed and I adapted. The whole point of my post was that I was floored that 3 wr went off in the first round. I've been in this league for 12 years and have never seen it and therefore wasn't what I had planned for.
