100 Years of Solitude (Netflix) (1 Viewer)

El Floppo

Despite Gabriel Garcia Marquez refusing during his lifetime, believing that no adaptation could truly capture the novel’s essence and that it would take 100 hours to tell the story properly, his masterpiece was made into a miniseries by Netflix... Under strict conditions by his sons: long format series, filmed in Colombia entirely in Spanish.

The first 8 eps of 16 appear to be out.

From what I've read, it's not a strict translation of the book to visual media... For better or worse.

I just watched ep 1, and it was fantastic.

Felt like I was immersed in the book...caveat- my memory of my last reading 10+ years ago isn't perfect...but it really feels right. All I can do right now at midnight not to stay up for the next 7+ hours to finish this- as I did with the book a few times.

I'm still nervous about my favorite book getting tarnished in some way- but so far, I'm all in.

I read the book as a high school senior and didn’t understand the fuss. Here was a family destined to live out the same pattern over and over and over. It did move me enough to write my senior paper about it, but high school rock was unmoved by the fate of those on the island.

HS floppo was blown away by the prose, the narrative approach, and especially the magical realism. I'd never read anything like it...still my favorite book, even if I didn't necessarily invest in all the characters

Watched a few more to take my mind off things last night. While still good to really good, it was not the right frame of mind to watch this.

Also some minor issues now with casting as some people age into new actors but others don't. I guess it adds to some of the uncertain "magic" but not in a way that's working for me

2 episodes in and I don't think this story has translated to screen so well so far. It's been a bit slow, dull, somewhat disjointed. The books narrative and internal dialog passages are needed.

I read many of GGM's books during my years backpacking.

We were excited to start watching this over the weekend.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz-fest.
