1st-time keeper league (1 Viewer)

This is the first year we're implementing keepers in our league. We're going with 2 max, and you lose the draft pick for the round the player was selected.

We've stated that specifics would be ironed out in plenty of time for the start of next season...however, I wanted to get some advice from you guys.

There are a handful of players who went undrafted that could possibly be keepers. Guys like Alfred Morris and Jonathan Dwyer come to mind. Then there are IR guys...people like Percy Harvin.

I don't want these players to be kept at absolutely no cost, but I'm not sure what to decide upon as far as what they should cost. I'm thinking with IR guys it should still be the round they were drafted in originally, but what about free agents? We have 15-16 rounds in our draft...would a 5th rounder be too steep?

I appreciate any and all advice here. If you've been in a similar situation let me know how you handle it.

Thanks!

I think a 5th would be too high. Free agents are post draft so last round pick would be closer.

Not that it is related, but something you should also think about if you have not done so; what to do if that team does not have a draft pick in the round for the player they want to keep

Example: If they want to keep RGIII who was their 2012 14th rounder and during the season, before they knew they wanted to keep him, they moved their 2013 14th rounder. Can they still keep Griffin? Can they trade for another 2013 14th rounder and use that one instead? Can they give up an earlier 2013 round pick (say 13th round) in lieu of the 14th? Just some food for thought.

In my keep 3, we do it differently (you can keep a player for 3 years and then have to trade him by week 11 of the 4th year or lose him with no compensation at the end of the season). For yours, I would suggest an FA keeper go at the price of the last round of your draft. I would also have an IR guy go for the price of the round he was drafted in the previous year (just because he was IR'ed, it should not change anything).

If drafted players are kept at the round they were drafted, then free agents should be a last-round pick.

Same with waiver-wire pickups (although, if you use FAAB, I guess you could come up with some formula to translate FAAB dollars into "equivalent rounds"--say, every $5 = 1 round up from the bottom).

IR shouldn't change anything.
