2 TE Sets: This year's offensive trend (1 Viewer)

I've read that several teams (Dallas and NE come to mind) are going to be using more 2TE sets this year. My first thoughts are:

1.) Great! More protection for Bledsoe/Brady...more options to dump off to as well. Maybe not though since defenses will obviously make adjustments.

2.) More blocking options for rushing plays? Same thing...I expect an extra linebacker will be assigned to the extra TE.

3.) TE production more spread out? Again, maybe: if one TE is there primarily to block then the other (Witten/Watson) should still get their numbers.

Your take on this? Are you adjusting any projections for teams that plan on using this set extensively?

Hey EF,

Dallas and NE have used two-TE sets for years. I doubt we're going to see either team use more of them this year, especially Dallas after losing Dan Campbell.

Lots of teams talk about using two-TE sets this time of year, just like they talk about running more. I wouldn't read too much into it. TEs get injured at an alarming rate, and I doubt we'll see any noticeable increase in 2005.

Just my :2cents:

You are right and wrong ...imo.Yes, Dallas has used this from time to time. However they are moving to this being their base offense. Also, I think your TE analysis is short sighted.

Dallas will use:

Witten

Fasano

Hannam

Polite (H-Back)

Dallas didn't have a true FB last year, and they don't have one this year. Last year their WR3 had just 22 catches, so I'm going to guess they used 2-TE sets quite a bit. (I don't think Barber and Jones are on the field at the same time very often). With TO there, Dallas will very rarely use 1-WR sets, and I'm sure will still occasionally use 3-WR sets. I know they like Fasano but I see him as being a short-term downgrade from Campbell, and Owens an obvious upgrade from Johnson. So I think Dallas might be more WR-oriented this year, and we'll see if a third WR ever emerges.

They used 2 TE's because they had swinging gates at both Tackle spots after Flo went down. This will be a totally different offense from what you saw last year.

I agree with most of this but Dallas. Really is very true how teams love the two TE set in the spring and the first week of August but rarely use it after that but in red zone and short yardage spots. Parcells seems sincere. Since he's gotten there he's been looking for more size on D and he got that. Now he's been talking about more size on O and how they'll go two TE to get that push. He insists on being able to run when the other team knows you're going to run. He loves to say quotes about that BTW :) Then there's the right tackle spot. It was rough last year and Fabini has looked awful. If putting a TE on his side(but not taking Witten out of the passing game) cures this, it seems he will. One of their starting(due to injury) young T from last year is in Tampa now, that sums up well what Parcells thought of his play IMO. If Fabini gets his act together that could change everything. Before training camp Parcells said he doesn't worry about Fabini, he could turn his back to the D and they'd only allow 15 sacks all year. Now, he seems very concerned and Fabini is 3rd on the RT depth chart.

Polite is still on the team and is an OK FB. He's not great but comparable to a bunch of guys that played for the Jets over the years under Bill. He's not Sam Gash(Pats), not a mature Sowell(Jets), but he's tough and gets in there. He's very undersized playing TE but word has been positive about his effort+attitude.Glenn would rock in the slot. He is arguably one of the best NFL WR at getting to a spot(considerring his awesome rookie year+potential this is pathetic it's all he's got but....) and Crayton seems to be able to take anyone deep. I could easily see some 3 WR sets too.

1 WR set(2 TE) well Owens is built and has been told over and over he's gonna have to block first before he gets the big play he covets. Parcells gave the same tough love to Meshawn and he thrived with it and is a terrific blocker. Owens knocks down DBs with stiff arms and if Parcells can get him to love knocking em' down with blocks(which he could do) good luck stopping a run to the outside.
