I am seeing a lot of similarities.

--------------

Prior to 2006, the St. Louis Cardinals had several years of regular season greatness. But it did not translate into a championship.

Prior to 2006, the Indianapolis Colts had several years of regular season greatness. But it did not translate into a championship.

In 2005, the Cardinals starting pitching, allegedly their weak spot that was keeping them from winning a championship, was great during the regular season (best ERA in MLB).

In 2005, the Colts defense, allegedly their weak spot that was keeping them from winning a championship, was great during the regular season (2nd in pts. allowed and 11th in total yards).

In the 2005 playoffs, the Cardinals offense let the team down, and was the main reason why they lost in the playoffs to a wild card team.

Coming into 2006, the Cardinals were talked about by many as being a favorite to win the World Series.

The Cardinals started the 2006 season off hot as hell, but stumbled down the stretch. In particular, the starting pitching was a liability down the stretch.

Coming into the 2006 postseason, the Cardinals were a mere afterthought. Very few gave them a realistic chance to win the World Series.

In the 2006 postseason, the Cardinals starting pitching, thought to be their biggest weak spot, suddenly was the team's greatest strength.

The Cardinals won the World Series.

The Colts...............Can they win the next two games and make the comparisons even more valid?

There are similarities but for some reason it seems like a much bigger shock that the Cards won the World Series than it would be if the Colts won the superbowl. Perhaps the reason is that the NL representative was considered by most to have no shot against whoever came out of the AL.

I brought this up entering the post season that the best STL/IND comparison was that the Colts floundered some to end the year and some people were quick to write them off because of it. But IMO that really is where the comparison ends.

The 2006 Cardinals won 22 fewer games than the 2004 Cardinals. That is a HUGE difference. This year's team was barely .500 (83-78) and without doing all the research, I suspect was the team with the worst winning percentage to win a championship out of the major sports.

So to be a fair comparison, the Colts really needed to be like 8-8 and sneak into the playoffs on the last day and then win out in the post-season to be on par with the 2006 Cardinals.

As for the Colts, they ended up going 2-2 in the last month of the season, and IIRC something like 90% of SB winners ended the year 3-1 or 4-0 in their last 4 games.
