2006 Tampa Bay Bucs thread (1 Viewer)

Simeon Rice had a press conference yesterday. Here are some of the quotes I remember.

-"I am the best in the game"

-"Rank me up there with Dwayne Wade and Kobe"

-"I know this because I have been told by Rod Marinelli"

-"Marinelli is unbelievable"

-"Marinelli is the best coach he has had, no disrespect to any other coaches"

Don't be surprised if Rice jets for Detroit when his contract is up. ;)

It's done:

LINK

Nine-year veteran Ronde Barber, one of the league's top all-around cornerbacks, has reached agreement with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a contract extension.

The deal, which will keep the three-time Pro Bowl performer off the unrestricted free agent market, has been in the works for a few weeks at least. The extension is for five seasons, but sources told ESPN.com that the deal is actually designed more for two seasons, and is worth roughly $14 million over that stretch. The total value, if the Bucs paid all the options and Barber played the entire five seasons of the deal, is about $24 million.

Barber, 31, will receive a $6 million signing bonus and it's believed there is an option bonus due next spring for a like amount.

A third-round choice in the 1997 draft, Barber, the twin brother of New York Giants' star tailback Tiki Barber, was entering the final season of his existing contract. Although he felt for the last two years that he had outplayed the value of that contract, Barber kept his grievances private and never threatened any kind of work stoppage.

The former University of Virginia star began his NFL career as a nickel cornerback before moving into the starting lineup. He still generally moves inside on third-down situations to cover the receiver in the slot and is one of the NFL's best players in that regard.

Along with Brian Kelly, he forms one of the league's best, but also most underrated, corner tandems. His all-around skills, and especially his ability to support against the run, make Barber an excellent fit for the Bucs' Cover 2 scheme.

In 129 games, Barber has 693 tackles, 20 sacks, 28 interceptions and 94 passes defensed. He is the only cornerback in NFL history to post at least 20 sacks and 20 interceptions.

What will the St Pete Times write about now that they can't criticize the Bucs for this??

He'll be cut after this season, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him land in Detroit. After White has a 15-sack season, Rice might seem very expendable.

From KFFL:

Rick Stroud and Stephen F. Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will rely more on the deep passing game within the offense this season, which is believed to best suit QB Chris Simms.

Simms averaged 6.5 YPA last year.

By contrast, Gannon under Gruden was averaging about 7.5YPA.

Split the difference, with a healthy WR corps and an explosive running game, I'd say 7.0 is very attainable.

Anyway, while this all seems negligible, combined with other factors + more time in Gruden's system, etc....

Sounds more and more like Simms is looking at about that 33-3500/22-25 mark.

Very encouraging for a young passer IMO.

I was just about to post about the  on reading the TB TC report, and it ended up being a bunch of non-information and fluff piece. It's like Pasquerelli didn't even go to camp. He just came to Tampa and went to Ybor and got drunk. And then the next morning he was like "####, need to write an article".

Guess fluff piece on Simms is better than nothing at all :bag:

edit: just noticed the third article actually has the content in there. Was about to be disappointed...

yeeesh...
Three wins versus two wins and a loss in the other trio. They should walk out ahead of CAR again and won't need much to beat Dallas by that late in the season, but that Washington game sandwiched between the two is liable to be an ###-whoopin.

From the ESPN Simms article:

Gruden says "I'm going to have to screw things up pretty good for that kid (Simms) not to turn out really special."

What? No mention of Gradkowski???

I heard this one time Jesus was trying to walk on water but he started to slip, so Bruce Gradkowski used his kinetic powers to make Jesus levitate. The sight was so amazing it immediately converted a band of jewish fishermen looking on.

We should have had the Skins in the playoffs, and I think we are still a better team.

I agree we should have had the Skins in the playoffs. But they are a much improved team, and the Bucs are still a young team. This year the championship window starts to open, and next year we'll be in prime position to make runs for the forseeable future. As much as I don't like to admit it, I think the Skins are definitely the team to beat in the NFC this year. I did pick them over the Bucs in the NFC Championship game this year :( . We'll see though. I still think this team is definitely good enough to make a lot of noise, but not quite at the level of the NFL elite yet. Next year though...Does anyone know what OL have been running with the first team? I'd really like to know if they actually plan on starting Joseph this year at RG, and if Fonoti is seriously pushing Buenning at LG.I'm still thinking that Davis/Buenning/Mahan/Terry/Walker will be the starters, unless something drastic changes. As for '07, who knows. I'm sure Gruden wants to replace Davis at some point, perhaps next year's draft. Could see the '07 line looking like: Davis/Buenning/Mahan/Joseph/Trueblood. That would be a fantastic young line.Anyone think either or both Joseph/Trueblood will start this year? I'm pretty sure Gruden/Muir will try to get whatever week 1 lineup they have to start all 16 games again this year, and I'm not sold on them counting on a pair of rookies to protect Simms's blindside.

Just read Brackins was cut for positive steroids test.

Per Simms, I'm starting to feel super Homer-ish about the Bucs going to the Super Bowl this year.

From watching camp, Boston looks like a pro bowler again, Simms has been firing cannons and the passing game looks all-around like a top attack.

The only real minus in camp has been Cadillac's hands. While he's made great strides since last year, he still does not look like the "complete back" some of us have been hoping for this year.

Buccaneers | Gruden comments on competition at receiver

Published Mon Aug 7 8:02:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Buccaneers.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden commented on the competition at wide receiver during his press conference Monday, Aug. 7. Wideout is considered to be one of the more heated battles in camp. "I'll just make this point here: Nothing's in stone," Gruden said. "Everybody says we have competition for the number-three spot. Hell, we've got competition for numbers one, two, three, four and five, and six and seven and eight and nine and 10 and 11 and 12. We're competing to see who plays, and we've got some competition."

I'm going to Disney World all day Tuesday with a friend in Orlando, and so I figured while I'm there, I'll head over to TC Monday and/or Wednesday.

Anyone else planning on going?

I'm pretty sure I'll just be going to camp on Wednesday, perhaps just the afternoon, but possibly the morning as well (if I can wake up that early).

Getting our tailgating together now...bringing a little mahi-mahi for the grill ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing Joseph and Trueblood in person for the first time. Want to see Simms manage a few drives. Also interested in the Chas character.

Don't think I'm going. Nobody in my group of regulars bothers with preseason any more.

We've wavered a little in the preseason the last few years also...but there is alot of excitement about this season around here. More than I can remember in a while.I'll try to report back with any onsite observations.... :hotties:.... :banned:

Tell me more about E. Graham. He seems to be having a great pre-season. Any chance he unseats Pittman to earn the back up spot? Also is Caddilac out with an injury or are they just resting him. I didnt look real hard but I couldnt find anything. TIA for your input.

Graham always has a great pre-season. He may take over for Pitt in 07 or 08, but not likely this year. Pitt is too good at pass-protecting and receiving.Caddy doesn't play much in preseason. Just a few snaps last year and probably no more than 2-3 this year.

A couple of thoughts from live at RayJay:

- Simms looks a little out of sync. I'm chalking it up to the thought that the short controlled passing game of Gruden needs it's cogs to run well...Galloway, Smith, Carnell, etc.

- The DL looked dominant. No room to run, no time to throw. If they can harken back to the Sapp days, and put pressure on the QB with a 4-man rush, and stop the run, Monte's Tampa 2 will have a HUGE year.

- Joseph looked like he belongs immediately. Trueblood is gigantic. Walker had his typical false start. Fonoti looked terrible.

- I've got to say it...Gradkowski looks so smooth, confident, and talented that it just seems like a matter of time before he starts in the NFL. Good situation for the Bucs with Simms' contract coming up.

- Barrett Ruud is going to be a good player in this league.

- Cheerleaders are better than I've ever seem them...and that's saying something.

I think it's fairly evident that Gradkowski is #2. Rattay is an experienced #3, not a bad thing to have.
As little as Rattay played in the preseason, don't you think it's possible he has the #2 wrapped up and Gruden wanted to give his young #3 some PT?

anything is possible, I just don't see it that way. Gradkowski has been the #2 in the past couple of games, I don't see that as simply being a way for Gruden to take a look at him.

No, I've read elsewhere that Gruden is very high on Gradkowski (he reminds him of Gannon supposedly) and if Simms struggles for a significant stretch he might even get the call.

I haven't seen Gruden say anything like that. People are assuming, but nothing from Gruden on what QBs are playing in what spots...unless you have seen something?

I think Rattay is the #2 QB on a short lease. The Buccaneers are a playoff team and there's no way that Gruden is giving the rock to Gradkowski this year.

Rattay isn't the 2nd coming of Brett Favre, but he has experience. Gruden didn't play him much in the preseason because he knows what he got with him.

IMO of course.

I swear I did but I have reading a lot this week boning up for a draft tonight so I can't give you a definite link. Sorry but I'll try and track it down.

FWIW...

Rattay looked bad last night. Couldn't lead the offense anywhere.

Gradkowski looked good again. Led a TD drive, ran for about 40 yards, and just seemed to add a spark.

Grads did pull a bone-headed move by throwing a 2-yard dump pass on 4th and 18 with the game on the line. Gruden was visibly pi$$ed about it.

Not sure if the situation is clear yet. Grads looked better, but still may be too green for Gruden to trust him leading the team if in a playoff drive.

Also, I believe David Boston sealed a spot on the roster last night.

Gradkowski has some serious wheels. Boston finally showed something, I wonder if Ike gets cut now?

Surprised at some of the names on the list, must have been a hard choice for the coaches.

The most difficult decisions come at this point in the season. But I am sure the Bucs will certainly be better because of them.I wonder what the practice squad will look like. Will Edell even be on the list?
