2007 All-seasons K news (1 Viewer)

From dallascowboys.com posted yesterday b/f gametime:

1. That's all Folk?

The door has never been wider for rookie kicker Nick Folk than it will be Thursday night. The recent hamstring injury to veteran Martin Gramatica gives Folk the chance to handle all of the kicking chores against the Vikings, though Gramatica said he should be ready for the Sept. 9 opener if he's still on the roster.

The sixth-round pick from Arizona has been flawless in his preseason field goals and has performed well on kickoffs. If he can continue his consistency with one more game, it will be almost impossible for the Cowboys to cut him. The question then for the Cowboys would be if they could handle going with a rookie kicker - only - heading into the season.

But the fact that keeping Gramatica on the Week One roster would guarantee his $800,000 base salary for the entire season suggests keeping Folk makes more sense. Especially if he can finish off this preseason with another solid effort. What's even better for the rookie? He gets to kick indoors once again.

NEW ORLEANS

Saints place-kicker Olindo Mare was another starter who played because the team no longer has a backup kicker. Mare, playing against his former team, handled kickoffs and missed a 33-yard field goal attempt when the ball bounced off the left upright in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Mare was wide right on a 55-yard field goal attempt. In the fourth quarter he missed a 50-yarder as the ball bounced off the right upright, eliciting boos from the remainder of the sparse crowd. New Orleans sent a sixth-round draft choice to Miami in the off-season for Mare.

CINCINNATI

For the second consecutive week, the Bengals lost a kicker when he tried to make a tackle. Aaron Elling injured his knee in the second half of last night's game.

GREEN BAY

General Manager Ted Thompson and his personnel staff likely spent part of Friday trying to trade one of their kickers, rookie Mason Crosby or incumbent Dave Rayner. The Packers began testing the trade market last week, when they reportedly offered one of their kickers to the New York Giants. "I haven't heard anything at all," said Paul Sheehy, Rayner's agent, on Friday. "It's a tough situation." Crosby held a slight edge in practice over Rayner, but Crosby missed the only field goal against Tennessee. He was wide left on a 52-yard attempt that had plenty of distance. "We've been going back and forth, and we're both hitting the ball well," Crosby said after the game. "We'll just see what they decide to do. I'd love to have that (52-yarder) back. I hit it well. I just misjudged it a little bit and put it a little left." Contrary to what McCarthy and Thompson have suggested during training camp, there appears to be little or no chance the Packers will keep both kickers.

ATLANTA

Newly signed Matt Prater made a game tying 33 yarder and a game winning 45 yarder, both in the 4th quarter of last night's game. He was wide left on a 44 yard attempt. He reached the endzone on 3 of 4 kickoffs (two for touchbacks).

Per Rotoworld:

Giants waived K Josh Huston, CB E.J. Underwood, OL Todd Londot, WR Brandon London, and DT Tui Alailefaleula.

This makes Lawrence Tynes the likely kicker in New York, although the Giants will probably keep an eye on the waiver wire.

Still nothing on Nick Folk. I'm refreshing google news ever half hour.

I took him in the last round as my only kicker. He was the last "good offense kicker" left. :bag:

Per Rotoworld:

Packers released K Dave Rayner.

He lost the battle to rookie Mason Crosby, who was probably helped by his signing bonus.

“They said it was the hardest decision they had to make at any position. It was one of those things where I don’t think I could have done any more. I was fighting an uphill battle the whole way after the draft.”- Dave RaynerThe current question: is his agent on the phone with the Giants?

I would have to believe they are. Rayner should be kicking for someone.

In fact, all eight draft picks made the team, including sixth-round pick Nick Folk, who will handle all of the kicking duties, at least to start the season. That's because the Cowboys have placed veteran Martin Gramatica on injured reserve because of strained hamstring he suffered last week.

While Gramatica will be placed on IR, that doesn't guarantee his $800,000 base salary. It's likely the Cowboys will give him an injury settlement in the next few days. If that happens, Gramatica would not be eligible to return to the roster for at least six weeks, plus the length of the settlement.

ATLANTA

"We've watched [Prater] for a long time. He was watched by a lot of teams. He's so strong-legged. His workout was one of those workouts where you go 'Wow' when you walked away from it."

- President and GM Rich McKay

Hard to say what would have happened if Gramatica hadn't gotten hurt.

I think there's a reasonable (but probably less than 50-50) chance that Dallas brings in a kicker to handle FGs and keeps Folk has a kickoff specialist.

The Rayner Derby

Rayner said he was told that the Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs were among the teams interested in him and hoped to schedule workouts there soon if he's not claimed on waivers today. "We're trying to sort through all of this," said Paul Sheehy, Rayner's agent. "With waivers, anything can happen. We need to wait until (today)."

ON THE MOVE

Looks like Lawrence Tynes didn't win the kicking job yet. According to someone who has spoken to K Dave Rayner recently, the former Packer will be visiting the Giants soon for a workout and physical. The person said Rayner could be here as soon as tonight and would presumably work out tomorrow. The Giants weren't willing to trade a draft pick for Rayner yesterday but would obviously like to take a look at him.

Also, K Josh Huston is on his way to Kansas City for a workout with the Chiefs one day after being cut by the Giants.

Anyone have any thoughts about Allen Rossum and his new duties on his new team (Pitt)? Will he be taking over some/all return (punt, kickoff) jobs?Gotta believe that's the only reason Pitt traded for him...TIAId
He won't be kicking for PIT, which is what this thread is about.

NP. This thread has just been so solid and informative (kudos to Mike and others), I'd just like to see it stay on track.

NY GIANTS

Former Packers K Dave Rayner worked out for the Giants today along with several long snappers -- none of which was former Chief Kendall Gammon. According to someone familiar with the Giants' thinking, Rayner did "nothing to distinguish himself'" and won't be signed by the team.

KC - CINCY

Also, K Josh Huston, who was cut by the Giants on Saturday, did not sign with the Chiefs after working out for them today. He's now headed to Cincinnati to work out for the Bengals.

KANSAS CITY

With rookie Justin Medlock struggling, the Chiefs had six kickers in for workouts Monday. Among them was 43-year-old John Carney, who kicked 18 seasons for Tampa Bay, San Diego and New Orleans and has a career field-goal percentage of 81.8. The Chiefs appear committed to Medlock, a fifth-round draft pick, for Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Texans. But they may not hesitate to sign a replacement if he continues to struggle in Houston. The other kickers working out were Josh Huston, Shane Andrus, Nick Novak, Kevin Lovell and Conner Hughes. Novak is the only one among the other five to have kicked in a regular-season NFL game. He played for Washington and Arizona.

GREEN BAY

"This guy was clearly more accurate. And he has a very strong leg."

- Special teams coordinator Mike Stock regarding Mason Crosby

CINCINNATI

The Bengals will give a tryout today to kicker Nick Novak, cut in the preseason by Chicago. Novak was one of six kickers worked-out Monday by Kansas City. Novak, from Maryland, has 16 games of NFL experience with Washington and Arizona. The Bengals are hoping Shayne Graham can heal from his bruised hip to kick in the opener. "I'm doing everything I can to be as ready as soon as possible," Graham said. Josh Huston, formerly of the Giants, also is scheduled to kick today for the Bengals.
