2007 NFL Draft QB Preview (1 Viewer)

Here are my Top 8 Senior QB's for the 2007 NFL Draft with a small scouting report on each.

1. Brady Quinn-Notre Dame

-The ideal QB. Perfect size, strong arm, good accuracy, great athletic ability, and good decision making. He will need to improve his deep ball accuracy and his decision making will need to be more consistent.

2. Drew Stanton-Michigan State

-Great size, is extremely tough, very accurate, very good arm strength and runs very well. He needs to be more consistent, has had injuries, plays in a spread offense, and his deep ball needs to improve.

3. Chris Leak-Florida

-Perfect mechanics, excellent footwork, great mobility, very good accuracy, and puts good zip and touch on the ball. He is very undersized, lacks good arm strength, decision making is questionable at times, and doesn't use his speed and ability to move enough (Has been sacked 73 times and only has 107 Rushing Yards. Not anywhere the numbers a QB with a 4.65-4.70 forty should have).

4. Sam Keller-Arizona State

-Perfect size, a good decision maker, good accuracy, and a strong arm. Doesn't have top athletic ability, had an injury last season which opened the gate for Rudy Carpenter who he will have to take the job back from, and doesn't have a lot of starting experience. A people many forget about, but was having a great season last year untill his injury. Could skyrocket up the boards with a good senior season.

5. Troy Smith-Ohio State

-Excellent athletic ability, great mobility, has a nose for the endzone, poised, good arm strength and accuracy. Is undersized, very inexperienced, has maturity concerns, needs to learn how to go through his progressions better, and his mechanics could use some tuning.

6. Jordan Palmer-UTEP

-Excellent size and arm strength, good production, good at throwing on the run, has good accuracy and is poised. Is very raw and mechanics and techinque need some work, decision making needs to be better, and has had injury problems. He didn't start playing football untill his senior year of high school, but I believe he has the potential to be better than his older brother Carson Palmer, but needs a lot of work.

7. Trent Edwards-Stanford

-Excellent size, great athletic ability, poised and let's plays develop, and has good arm strength. Needs to be more consistent and improve his accuracy and decision making. He is set-up for what could be a skyrocketing senior season. He could easily launch himself into the 1st Round (along with the likes of Jordan Palmer and possibly Sam Keller) and has some underrated weapons in WR Mark Bradford (younger brother of NFL WR Corey Bradford), WR Evan Moore (a big target at 6-7), and TE Matt Traverso. O-Line is bad though and will need to make quick decisions, which he has done a good job of thus far.

8. Kevin Kolb-Houston

-Has very good size, excellent athletic ability and at running the football, a lot of starting experience, good accuracy, very productive (with only Vincent Marshall as a weapon), good instincts, and is a great leader and is poised. He has been banged up a lot though (95 Sacks in his career leads the way by far), arm strength is only average, and decision making needs to improve. Is a very good player who could move up the boards and into the 1st day if he can improve his decision making in his senior season.

Others to watch (alphabetical order):

John Beck-BYU

Luke Getsy-Akron

Steven Moffett-Central Florida

Tyler Palko-Pittsburgh

James Pinkney-East Carolina

Lester Ricard-Tulane

Jeff Rowe-Nevada

Drew Tate-Iowa

Jared Zabransky-Boise State

Sometime this week, I will be posting my 2007 Draft Preview with a top 20 at each position (except FB [top 10], K [top 5], and P [top 5]), Top 100, and 2 Round Mock Draft.

No one else has an opinon on the 2007 Draft QB Class?
Relax, friend...and welcome! It's a Sunday Evening that happens to be Memorial Day Eve. This is one of those off-season Sundays that, if used properly, can net many of the married guys here a 'hall pass' down the road when the pigskin starts flying in the fall, so it's no surprise things are a little quiet around here...

...come Tuesday, you'll get more responses than you can handle, especially if my buddy Bloom chimes in with an early '07 Preview...

Great topic, nice post. Enjoy the boards...

PS: I'm absolutely SMITTEN with Kevin Kolb...

3. Chris Leak-Florida

-Perfect mechanics, excellent footwork, great mobility, very good accuracy, and is a very good decision maker. He is very undersized, lacks good arm strength, and doesn't use his speed and ability to move enough (Has been sacked 73 times and only has 107 Rushing Yards. Not anywhere the numbers a QB with a 4.65-4.70 forty should have).
As a Florida fan, this article just lost a bit of credibility in regards to the point about decision making. Leak's decision making is quite poor. Also, just to explain the last sentence about him being fast yet still having only 107 yards rushing, that's because he is the single most scared football player I have seen in my entire life. He absolutely will not take a hit...he has slid 1 yard short of a first down on 3rd down several times.

Good read.

Good list.

I'm not impressed with Leak, I'd have him lower on my list. But if he improves his second year in the Meyer system, he may move up some.

I like Kolb a lot. I'd put him only behind Quinn, Stanton, and Palmer. He has always impressed me with his poise. His draft status could suffer from the Houston jinx of Andre Ware and David Klingler. But I think he has more talent than either.

Zabransky puts up good numbers, but I don't think he has the arm strength for the NFL. He has also fallen apart in big games (such as the Georgia game last year). I wouldn't be surprised if Nick Lomax (Neil's son) gets some playing time this year if Zabransky falters.

Lester Ricard has also struggled with decision-making, losing his job at the end of last year. He has the talent to succeed, but hasn't put it together yet. He could move up a lot with an impressive season, but he's a borderline draft pick at this point (though he will undoubtedly impress people at the combine).

Another senior I like is Jeff Ballard at TCU. I'm not sure how he will do without Cory Rodgers this year, but he could be a late first-day pick.

A couple juniors who could mix things up are Brian Brohm and Kyle Wright. If either declares, they are probably a late-1st pick.

Leak will be lucky to be a first day pick. After watching almost all of his games the last couple years, he looks like a 2nd day pick at best.

Yea, sorry everybody about the Leak and decision making comment. I misread my notes, sorry. Also, like I said, Leak has the ability to scramble, he just doesn't use it as FreeBa pointed out.

John David Booty? He has next to 0 game experience (yet alone starting experience) and is undersized in terms of weight. Let's see this guy play at least half a season before we even say he is worthy of being drafted. (Just a quick note, Matt Cassell [Pats back-up QB] was Leinart's back-up at USC for 2 years as well but, Cassell nearly beat out Leinart and Cassell has a lot of tools to work with. Just figured I'd point that out).

I'm pretty intrigued by Kolb as well, like most of you. He has a lot to work with, such as his size and athletic ability. If his decision making improves and he has a great senior season at Houston, you shouldn't see him drop out of the 1st day.

Zabransky is a guy I liked a lot making my intial rankings (which was like back in Jan.) because of what I had seen of him I really liked. His leadership, ability to move around, and production. But, as I sat down and watched the tape on him, I certainly began to think less of him. Here is my scouting report on him:

Jared Zabransky-Boise State

Height: 6-2

Weight: 203 lbs.

Forty: N/A

Stats: 5669 Passing Yards 60.5% 35 TD’s 29 INT’s 48 Sacks 666 Rushing Yards 25 Rushing TD’s

Positives: Has been productive. Moves around very well and has good speed. Puts very good zip on the ball. Has a good amount of starting experience. Has good accuracy and can thread the needle well. Is tough and isn’t afraid of a hit while running the ball. Has very good athletic ability. Has good body strength. Goes through his progressions well. Throws well on the run. Knows how to get the ball into the end zone. Is poised and doesn’t panic when the pocket breaks down. Has very good intangibles. Is a very good team leader with upside.

Negatives: Has below average size and needs to add some bulk. Plays out of the shotgun most of the time. Has taken a good amount of hits over his career. Tries to force the ball and doesn’t put much touch on the ball. Makes poor decisions and reads. Doesn’t have very good arm strength. Has been inconsistent throughout his career. Tries to do too much at times. Has poor mechanics and technique. Footwork is average. Plays against average defenses in the WAC. Doesn’t have a very quick release. Has struggled against good competition.

Overall: Right now, the starting QB spot is open as Zabransky and Taylor Tharp (Junior) battle it out in what could destroy Zabransky’s draft status if he loses. At times is special to watch and looks really good with a bright future. At other times, you wonder why he is even playing QB. He defiantly has shown flashes and could develop nicely in the NFL. He’ll be a bit of a project, but under the right system he could shine.

Quote: “Zabransky is that rare combination of a great athlete and a quick and resourceful learner.”-scout.com

Like I put at the end, he is a project, but he could shine if he is in the right system and coached up good.

As for Ricard, he has all the physical tools you look for in a QB and with an impressive senior season, could skyrocket up draft boards.

Therein lies the problem with Leak...he doesn't improve, or at least he hasn't yet. As a 3-year starter he's still the same quarterback he was when he walked onto the field his first time as a true freshman.

Umm... I don't think this guy will ever be anywhere near as productive as Carson. I saw him a couple times last year and thought he made a bunch of bad decisions, had a relatively weak arm and was pretty inaccurate. He seems lost at UTEP, which plays in a little conference. Now having said that, he could very well be the 6th best QB this year, but I just don't see him ever being as good as his big bro.

I'm not saying Jordan will be better than Carson because I love Carson and he is an amazing player. I'm just saying he has the potential. Like I also said, he is extremly raw and his decision making needs to become a lot better. I don't know where you get the idea he has a weak arm though. He has a cannon for an arm. He needs time to develop but like I said, he has the potential to be special.
