Tigers were fifth last week and will be fifth at best next year.

Boosted by the acquisition of Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, Detroit shot up to second in the major leagues at $138.7 million. The Tigers’ payroll at the end of last season was 12th at $98.5 million.“This isn’t one of those teams, ‘I can’t believe we didn’t pick up this player, or this guy.’ We’ve got no excuses,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “It’s all about us, because the main man has done everything and more that you could ask.”

They added 21 million with Cabrera and Willis alone.

Red Sox are paying 23 million for Lugo and JD Drew this year.
Drew will silence the doubters this yearLugo, though... :uneasy:Edited to add - Drew's grand slam in Game 6 ALDS last year was easily worth a few million, in terms of revenue gained by the Red Sox

This does beg the question

Are the Yankees and Tigers ruining the competitive balance in baseball for all the other teams??

Fair value there. They'll be battling each other for comeback player of the year.
Comeback Player of the Year candidacy warrants $23 million on two guys? :wall:
Aren't you a White Sox fan?How bad is their salary compared to their performance>???
 Cubs fan. I'm just saying that their candidacy for Comeback Player of the Year doesn't warrant that much money before they show what they are going to do. And before you say it, yes, the Cubs have also historically overspent. I never said my team didn't. And again, as a second way of telling you that your question makes no sense in this discussion, I've been a Red Sox fan (behind the Cubs) for 20+ years. :(

Interesting note: This will be the first year that a team with a $120 million payroll misses the playoffs. The Mets ($117 million) held the previous record, but with 2 AL East and 2 AL Central teams spending $120+, this year will bail them out of that walk of shame. Unless, of course, they miss again this year.
