2009 Tampa Bay Rays thread (1 Viewer)

At least we came away +1 in this series and a Yankees win tonight would help. Feldman is now 9-1 on the road with a 2.4 ERA but he looked like Greg Maddux out on the bump today. Changed speeds, worked up and down, and the Rays looked hapless. Barty, CC, and Longo went 1-12 with 7 k's at the top of the lineup. Can't win games like that. If you take the top 3 and bottom 2, you get 1 for 18 with 11 strikeouts and 0 walks

Wow....'Los has been a man on a mission since his friend's passing. 2-for-2 with 2 HR tonight gives him 6 HR in last 5 games.

Longoria....what the hell's going on with this kid?
Don't fret Fin...he's still bending the Sox pitching over his knee on a consistent basis.
No doubt....over 1/4 of his RBIs come against the Sox. It's ridiculous. I like the kid but he's been a bit of a disappointment. I'm starting to wonder if some of the scout missed the mark on guys like Price, Upton and Longoria. Longo will come around, most likely but I guess only time will tell with Price and Upton.

:lmao: shut upYou could already argue that Price justified his draft pick with his playoff performance last year. Without a power arm like that coming out of the bullpen, it's unlikely the Rays beat the Sox ( ) and make it to the World Series.

Well, Wade Davis looked great. Along with Niemann and Price, three pretty impressive rookies this year. Add to Garza and Shields and they should have a nice rotation next year.

...which is all we have to look forward to now. It was a good run. They should be in the thick of it again next year, but this was a tough season to swallow. They were just never able to make a run. Hopefully it was just a post-WS hangover.

They obviously need some pen help, but a guy like Nick Johnson wouldn't be bad at all for that offense. High OBP guy, probably won't be too expensive because of injury concerns. But when healthy, he is a very solid hitter.Rotation is solid. No need to make any moves there. They are about the only team in the majors who have that luxury.

Hopefully Davis stays and they see if he's good enough to earn a spot in the rotation, probably the fifth spot. He looked pretty good although the bullpen couldn't finish and they gave up a grand slam.

I'd like to see Davis in more action, he doesn't look bad at all.

Nick would be nice, but they would need to unload Burrell. Not sure it's possible, and he's probably going to bounce back next year. The rotation is the main reason Rays fans can relax. As long as one of Davis, Price or Garza become an 'ace' they'll be in great shape. And all three have the stuff to do it.

Because I'm bored before the FSU-Miami game, here is my thought on the roster next year. Obviously won't be correct, but I would like to see other opinions.

C- Zaun

1B- Pena

2B- Zobrist

SS- Bartlett

3B- Longoria

LF- Crawford

CF- Upton

RF- Joyce/Perez platoon

DH- Burrell

Bench- Aybar. catcher not on roster yet, Sean Rodriguez, the other in the RF platoon

Rodriguez and Aybar can cover all IF positions. Wouldn't be shocked if they trade Bartlett for a good package while his value is at its peak and promote Brignac. I think Aki will be non-tendered and will sign on somewhere else for more money than the Rays can offer. Would love to see him back though.

SP1- Garza

SP2- Price

SP3- Shields

SP4- Niemann

SP5- Davis

BP- Howell

BP- Balfour

BP- Wheeler

BP- Cormier

Long man- Sonnanstine

Loogy- Choate

and I think they'll spend a little money this off-season on a closer-type not on the roster yet.

I think the rotation is pretty much set in stone, but the bullpen could be shifted around. Only true definites are JP and Cormier.

Also, with such a young rotation, what do you do with Hellickson? He's basically ready. I don't think they were anticipating Niemann being this good.

FYI...there will be a presser soon to announce something new for '10. I'm sure you can figure out what it is.

Are the Rays going to shut down Wade Davis? His IP count is up to 179 on the season (highest of his career), and the Rays are all but mathmatically done in the playoff hunt.

Heaven forbid, but if this kid blows out an elbow in a meaningless September game against Seattle it's going to be hard for their GM to justify it.

This guy has jaw-dropping talent and should be a centerpiece of their rotation next season. To risk it just seems indefensible.

Rays were smart and shut down Hellickson at 114 IP, I hope they do the same for Davis. That Rays rotation next season could be scary good.

Hellickson is coming off an injury but he's still pitching in the playoffs at AAA right now. I think Davis will be limited after the 125 pitch effort last night but they need to make another callup to get that to happen. I'd prefer they shut Garza and Shields down now or at least limit their workloads. Call up Carlos Hernandez and give him a start or two, etc.

Yup. Main reason I'm not too upset over this year. They took a step back, but as the dumb cliche goes, sometimes you have to do that to step forward.Price and Niemann won't be rookies next season, and I expect a huge year out of Garza.
