Again - I only do this to stay up to date on the prospects and simply because I enjoy the puzzle. Critique away but remember I am not tryin to be a pro.
1.1 - Rams - Jimmy Clausen QB - The Rams have a total lack of direction on this team. The best thing for them would be to trade out of the top spot, but trading out of the top spot is a very tough thing to do. For the Rams to establish direction, they need to draft a franchise QB. I dont see any FAs who will help them along. I believe that the Rams are going to pass on Mike Vick - first of all - he isnt who you want as the face of your franchise, especially as a new ownership group moves in. This pick is going to be Jimmy Clausen. The kid is ready for the NFL. He has played in a pro style offense, makes very quality decisions, and knows how to progress through his WRs. He has the arm strength to make all the throws and Jimmy Clausen is ready to play QB in the NFL.
1.2 - Lions - Ndomkung Suh - The Rams passing on Suh is a really large gift for Detroit. Detroit needs to improve that Dline more than anything and Suh will be an instant improvement. Suh's decision to participate in all combine events is just more evidence of his confidence in himself, his passion for football, and his quality character. This is why he stays in front of McCoy in this draft.
1.3 - Bucs - Gerald McCoy DT - Tampa is so desperate for help on this Defensive line. McCoy is the real deal and in some circles he is considered the best player in the draft. A very strong pass rusher from the DT spot, McCoy will be a great addition to Tampa and few players have this ability to collapse the pocket.
1.4 - Redskins - Russell Okung OT - The biggest need for the Redskins is that LT spot. Jason Campbell is still an unknown. Last year he loses both OTs, a starting OG, both RBs, and his stud TE in Chris Cooley. The best way to see what the Redskins have in Campbell is to let him play with a healthy team. Okung has alot of experience in zone blocking, which makes him a perfect fit. No doubt - if Okung is here, he is the pick.
1.5 - Chiefs - Dez Bryant WR - The Chiefs seem to have found a running back in Jamal Charles. Dwayne Bowe cannot be depended upon as he cannot stay out of Haleys Doghouse. Behind Bowe they have nothing. The Chiefs have to build the offense up - and Dez Bryant is a great place to start.
1.6 - Seahawks - - Bruce Campbell OT - Seahawks have missed on selecting a franchise LT so many times recently that I think they take the sure thing in Campbell. The best thing for this team right now - as I dont think they are that far away from the playoffs - is a pillar somewhere on the offensive line. Alot might change withthe combine workouts as far as who the top OT are, but as of now I think Bruce Campbell will rate out 2nd. *Update - clearly he appears to be among the most impressive at the combine measurables.
1.7 - Browns - Eric Berry S - There is no chance Cleveland takes a QB here. In all the combined years of drafting, neither the President or the GM have ever taken a QB in the first round. More than anything the Browns need to add talent and leadership. I think Eric Berry provides both qualities as well as some serious help in the run and pass defense.
1.8 - Oakland Raiders - Joe Haden CB - I believe that Oakland is a much better team than we give them credit to be. Joe Haden working opposite Nmamdi Asomunga would be a really exciting tandem to see in action.
1.9 - Bills - Sam Bradford QB - I remember back in 2006. Lee Evans was on his way to becoming one of the top 10 WRs in the game. JP Lohsman showed some talent at the QB position and things were looking up for Buffalo. In 2007, the team started the transition to Trent Edwards and Lee Evans was never the same. I dont feel that Evans is the problem, I think its clear that Trent Edwards lacks the skills of an NFL QB. When you cant succeed with TO and Lee Evans, you are just not very good. Bradford gives the Bills fans something to be excited about and some confidence that the future is bright. Bradford will be a starter from Day one.
1.10 - Denver Broncos - Dan Williams - NT - Denver is desperate for an anchor on the DLINE and they dont come much better than Dan Williams. With Bruce Campbell off the board, Denver makes the best pick for their team in Dan Williams. Thank you cards are in the mail from DJ Williams, Elvis Dumervil, and Robert Ayers.
1.11 - Jacksonville Jags - Jason Pierre-Paul DE - This guy will fly up the draft board, because he is goign to amaze people at workouts. Pierre-Paul may very well be the best athlete at the DE position in this draft, and workout #s will open eyebrows. Winning cures attendance woes. Why invest in a new QB when you have a ProBowl QB on your roster? I just cannot justify it unless Garrard was nearing retirement. Pierre-Paul is no Tim Tebow but I would bet that there are alot of South Florida fans in Jacksonville.
1.12 - Miami Dolphins -Rolando McClain LB - A huge bargain here at this point in the draft. I think that Terrance Cody gets a long hard look here but Miami just cannot allow McClain to pass them up when he is available.
1.13 - San Francisco - Brandon Graham OLB - Graham proved during Senior Bowl week that he is one of the most dominating players in this years draft. He simply could not be blocked one on one. SF in my opinion lacks a real good pass rusher and Brandon Graham should head the class.
1.14 - Seattle - Derrick Morgan DE - I dont think that Morgan lasts this long any other year. With so many teams incorporating the 3-4, I believe Morgan will fall to Seattle. With Kearney maybe retiring, or maybe not being with his price tag, DE becomes an even larger need than it was before. If they keep Kearney, Morgan would be a good guy to have opposite him and be a building block along with Aaron Curry. Morgan plays the run equally as well as he plays the pass which means Seattle adds an every down guy who could blossom into so much more.
1.15 - New York Giants - Taylor Mays S - If Kenny Phillips makes a comeback, Mays will be an excellent player to put next to him. This secondary was a horrible aspect of a team that for so many years has been very good defensively. Adding a guy like Mays to roam the middle would be key. Many dont like Mays but with his speed I think he would be able to cover so much ground that alot of teams are going to love him. I don't think this guy is Darnell Bing.
1.16 - Tennessee Titans - Donovan Warren CB - The Titans have 2 glaring needs at DE and CB. Warrern working opposite Finnegan could be outstanding.
1.17 - San Francisco - Tim Tebow QB - If SF is going to go ahead and run the spread offense with Alex Smith, then they mind as well go for it and draft Tim Tebow. More than anyone, Mike Singletery believes in WINNERS and passionate football players. I am convinced that Tebow will be in SF when all is said and done.
1.18 - Pittsburgh Steelers - Anthony Davis OT- If you can give Ben more time I cant imagine how effective he would be. Also this would help out future stud Rashard Mendenhall quite a bit.
1.19 - Atlanta Falcons - Carlos Dunlap - DE - John Abraham is getting up there in age and ATL needs to make a move at thsi position before the cupboard is bare. I can see Atlanta being nervous because of Dunlaps Character concerns due to what happened with Mike Vick. However think to the 1st round pick who had great Character - Jamal Anderson. Dunlap is a nice medium.
1.20 - Houston Texans - Brian Price DT - I like Price to work on a Dline right in between Mario Wililams and Okoye. I think that he could bring the best out of Okoye who so far has been a major bust for the Texans.
1.21 - Cincinatti Bengals - Sean Weatherspoon OLB - Weatherspoon slipped out of the first in my last mock but at the end of the day, he showed that he is a real player. Cincinatti will be glad to have him, and this will allow the transition of Rey Malaluga to MLB to start to be more than just a thought. Weatherspoon, Rivers and Malaluga, with Dhani Jones leadership will make for a dominating defense.
1.22 - New England Patriots - CJ Spiller RB - Towards the end of the season it seemed like NE has lost some of their offensive explosiveness. Spiller might be the most explosive player in this draft. Spiller should be very effective in New England and will give the Pats another dynamic playmaker.
1.23 - Green Bay Packers - Terrance Cody NT - True Nose tackles who are more than just a fat body are so difficult to find. Dispite the fact that GB has Franchised Ryan Pickett, he is on the wrong side of 30. Nose Tackles like Cody do not come around very often and Green Bay will pull the trigger when they have the chance.
1.24 - Philadelphia Eagles - Jonathan Dwyer RB - I think that McCoy is nothing more than a big play guy, glamourous 3rd down back similar to Reggie Bush. Dwyer has the stones to carry the ball 20 times on a weekly basis and Philly needs someone like this.
1.25 - Baltimore Ravens - Damian Williams WR - Baltimore needs to address the WR position with Derrick Mason threatening retirement. It reminds me a bit of the Brett Favre situation. Williams ia a supersmooth athlete and a great route runner with sure hands. The fact that he has played and produced against top competition helps as he is very well polished and should be able to help the Ravens right away.
1.26 - Arizona Cardinals - Mike Iupati OG - With the retirement of Kurt Warner the transition for this team into a power running team needs to go to the head of the class. Iupati is the best in class and should help Beanie Wells see 1200 yards.
1.27 - Dallas Cowboys - -Bryan Bulaga OT - Dallas has a ned at Tackle and Bulaga will fill it.
1.28 - San Diego Chargers - Jahvid Best RB - Best will be taking over for LT and is exactly the type of all around running back that San Diego needs. I think he is a perfect fit in SD and doesnt have to leave his home state.
1.29 - NY Jets - Jered Odrick DE - I think that Odrick would fit most any scheme and could be a very good 4-3 Defensive Tackle, but as a 3-4 DE he can be elite.
1.30 - Minnesota Vikings - Trent Williams OT - Bryant McKinney should probably not be back in Minnesota next year and if he does come back Trent Williams would be able to push him for everything that he has.
1.31 - Indianapolis Colts - Charles Brown OT - Colts want to make sure that Manning is never left unprotected and investing in a guy like Charles Brown is a smart move. His Pass Protection is LT ready today but he will need to work on building strength for the run game.
1.32 - New Orleans Saints - Ras I Dowling CB - When teams have to throw all day to keep up with your offense it tends to expose your CBs. Mike McKenzie should not be playing on this team, at least not as much as he has. The Saints will like Dowlings size and competitiveness. Still tons of room for improvement, which is very exciting.
ROUND 2
1. St. Louis (1-15) - Brandon LaFell WR -You have to have weapons for your new franchise QB to use. With Steven Jackson in the backfield and a rookie QB, i can see alot of 3rd and 5s in the future for St Louis. A guy like LaFell is going to make a living in the NFL converting these and might be the most important piece that a young signal caller can have. Great Size, great route running and really knows how to get after that ball. He isnt just a possession guy though - LaFell might be a future star in this league.
2. Detroit (2-14) - Kyle Wilson CB - in a division with some rising offenses - Green Bay, Mike Martz led Chicago, a dynamic Minnesota team full of athletes, Detroit needs to build on last years success of Louis Delmas by building secondary Depth. Kyle WIlson is ready to start helping Detroit right out of the gates and will learn in the fire.
3. Tampa Bay (3-13) - Earl Thomas S - Tampa needs some help in the secondary as Ronde Barber might not be around much longer at all. Having passed on Eric Berry, things could not have worked out any smoother for Tampa Bay.
4. Kansas City (4-12) - - Golden Tate WR - This is a move to Appease Charlie Weis. Would the Chiefs really consider taking WRs with each of their first 2 picks? I think so. When you take into account that Chris Chambers will likely ask for too much money to be resigned. Tate would be a dynamic slot receiver. Weis is more familiar with Tate than anyone else. There will be a learning curve for KC Wrs and Tate might be able to step right in and perform. No more will KC have to trot out guys like Bobby Wade, Lance Long, and Terrance Copper. They are set at this position for years to come.
5. Washington (4-12) - Maurkice Pouncey C - Casey Rabach is a FA and Washinton needs help up front. I think that Shanahan will go ahead and draft a star center, as this has always been key in his success. From 1995 -2007 - the entire time that Shanahan was in Denver, there was one consistancy and that was Tom Nalen as the starting center. I think Shanahan understands how a great Center can be the most critical piece of the offensive line.
6. Cleveland (5-11) - Jermaine Grishem TE - I believe that Holmgren has always really valued the TE position for a QB. I think back to all of his teams and if Holmgren was successful, he had a good TE. Grishem is the best of the bunch by a LONG SHOT and adds a great piece to the team for Brady Quinn. There really cannot be any more excuses for him now, with a solid Oline, solid RB, and lots of talent trying to catch the ball.
7. Oakland (5-11) - Demaryious Thomas WR - I find it ironic that the most physically gifted WR has his physical gifts fail him before the combine starts. Al Davis cannot pass on physical gifts and after drafting Joe Haden in round one, he strikes gold again with Demaryious Thomas in round 2.
8. Seattle (5-11) - Colt McCoy QB - Pete Carrol is going to want to add a QB in this draft. Matt Hasselbeck might be around another year but he is about as fragile as they come. McCoy would get a shot at some point. McCoy in my opinion has all the leadership skills of Tim Tebow but has better passing skills. Teammates love this guy.
9. Buffalo (6-10) - Arrelious Benn WR - After moving forward and drafting Sam Bradford, Buffalo needs to find him some weapons to work with. Benn will be a very effective guy opposite Lee Evans and working the middle of the field in the exact way that they wanted Terrell Owens to do so.
10. Tampa Bay - from Chicago^ (7-9) - Everson Griffin DE - I feel as though Tampa will address the WR position somehow in the Free Agent or trade market. At the time of the draft, this might not even be Tampa picking. That said, I could see Everson Griffin getting the call here. Griffin will be a rock solid DE who can move around on the Dline and plays the run really well. I think that he will fit right in with McCoy. You gotta be able to stop the run if you want to be able to make plays in the passing game. With the 3 picks Tampa has made in this Mock draft I think they put themselves in position to do so.
11. Miami (7-9) - Jerry Hughes OLB - With Porter all but gone and Jason Taylor with one foot out the door a pass rushing OLB is a must. Hughes will be blowing up backfields for a long time and teaming with Crowder and McClain, give the Dolphins a true position of strength.
12. New England - from Jacksonville^ (7-9) - Corey Wootten DE - New England should be looking to build some depth in the trenches and on the defensive side of the ball. Wootten reminds me of Richard Seymour, who was badly missed last year.
13. Denver (8-8) - Brandon Spikes ILB -Denver will continue to fill out their 3-4 defense here in this draft, and now their Linebacker Corps are complete. Denver, meet your linebackers for the next 5 years - Robert Ayers, DJ Williams, Brandon Spikes and Elvis Dumervil.
14. New York Giants (8-8) - Dexter McCluster RB Mississippi - His stock is going to rise as the draft gets closer and people make comparisions to Chris Johnson. I see McCluster as a guy who can have a Percy Harvin like impact - while lining up all over the field cause major formation/personal problems for the defense. In my opinion the Giants dont have a guy who can be a major matchup problem for defenses and a weapon like this would help Eli Manning out.
15. New England - from Tennessee^ (8-8) - Sergio Kindle OLB - Kindle runs with a non stop motor and gives NE a fierce pass rusher and solid OLB overall to work with.
16. Carolina^ (8-8) - John Jerry OG - I really think that Carolina would love to draft a WR, DE, or QB here in this spot but none of them seem to fit. For a team with a run first mentality, a guy like John Jerry is a perfect fit.
17. San Francisco (8-8) - Mike Johnson OT / OG - Probably the top offensive line prospect at this point, Johnson shoudl be able to play a few different positions on the line and help the ground game immediately.
18. Kansas City - from Atlanta^ (9-7) - Dominique Franks CB - Good size, good speed, good head on his shoulders, great technique, Franks should be starting in KC opposite Flowers right away.
19. Houston^ (9-7) - Toby Gerhart RB - I think that with Slaton having neck surgery, it means the end of the line for Houston. I am not sure they will go the route of retread, as Ahman Green was a huge bust for them. Even if they get LT, I think that Gerhart is a perfect compliment. Gerhart will be able to pound teh ball between the tackles which is what the team really seems to lack right now on offense.
20. Pittsburgh (9-7) - Vladimir Ducasse OG - Can play at a few spots on the OL and Pittsburgh is desperate for a guy like this.
21. New England* (10-6) - Rob Gronkowski TE - Better blocking TE than Gresham and maybe the better player overall if not for his injury concerns. Will be a huge addition to the NE offense in both the runnning and the pasing game. Reminds me of Heath Miller.
22. Cincinnati* (10-6) - Mardy Gilyard WR - Chad Johnson isnt getting any younger. Lav Coles has proven to be more or less a bust, and the future at the position looks somewhat weak. The Bengals have a supreme talent at QB and without a weapon oppostite Ocho Cinco, its going to waste. Gilyard is a guy who should be able to create seperation from corner backs and provide Palmer with another dynamic weapon as well as help out in the return game. A Local star, Gilyard will be a favorite of the fans.
23. Philadelphia* (11-5) - Brandon Ghee CB - Philly could use some DB Depth.
24. Green Bay* (11-5) - Ryan Matthews RB - Ryan Grant is a good RB but Matthews is better. In my opinion Grant is the type of RB who needs 20 carries to be most effective. Matthews can have 12 - 15 carries and 3 - 5 catches and be outstanding in all aspects.
25. Baltimore* (9-7) - Syd'Quan Thompson CB - Frank Walker should be roster fodder, not a starting CB. I think that Syd'Quan Thompson is a true shutdown CB whos stock is going to rise as the draft nears.
26. Arizona* (10-6) - Greg Hardy DE - At this point in the draft a guy like Hardy is a steal.
27. Dallas* (11-5) - Jeremy Williams WR - Roy Williams will likely not be around next year which means the Cowboys will haev to address the WR position. Williams might start out in the slot and eventually take over oppostite Miles Austin.
28. San Diego* (13-3) - Jon Asamoah OG - The power running game in San Diego seems to have left the building which is why finesse guys like Sporles have so much success outside of the tackles. I think San Diego needs a mauler and Asamoah fits the bill.
29. New York Jets* (9-7) - Patrick Robinson CB - I have a hard time imagining how great this defense could be if they have a reallly good cornerback working opposite Revis. I think that Robinson is that guy
30. Minnesota* (12-4) Reshad Jones S - Vikings need to address the safety position.
31. Indianapolis* (14-2) - Eric Norwood OLB/DE - I think that Norwood might be a fit as an OLB in a 4-3 scheme and I also think that having him rush the passer opposite Dwight Freeney could be a scary proposition for opposing QBs. When your more often than not playing with a lead, having a premier pass rush is just as important as having premier CBs.
32. New Orleans* (13-3) - Darrell Stuckey S -Sharper will not play forever and maybe never again in New Orleans. Stuckey can hopefully help soften that blow.
ROUND 3
1. St. Louis (1-15) - Cam Thomas DT - A team like St Louis has so many needs. They addressed two very big ones on the offensive side of the ball. Their Run defense needs work and I think they will look at the Defensive tackle spot here dispite the fact that they have Clifton Ryan and Adam Carriker. Adding a 3rd high quality big body to the rotation has the potential to do wonders for the Rams defense.
2. Detroit (2-14) - Parish Cox CB - With Wilson and Cox joining forces with Delmas, Detroit will unleash a secondary which is nothing like what they had on the field last year. It will be needed when you consider the fact that they play with the powerful offenses of the NFC North. Even with the moves, they still seem to have a long way to go on defense before fielding a winner.
3. Tampa Bay (3-13) - Devin McCourty CB - This is a guy who really started flying up boards with a great week at the senior bowl.
4. Kansas City (4-12) - Selvish Capers - KC should add a tackle that is good enough to Push Albert to success, not someone who is going to take his place.
5. Philadelphia - from Seattle (5-11) - A.J. Edds OLB - Edds is a perfect fit for the Eagles need. Perhaps the top SLB in this draft.
6. Cleveland (5-11) - LeGarrette Blount - Blounts talent is as good as any RB in this draft. I dont think that Cleveland thinks for a second that Jerome Harrison is the answer for their running game. Blount runs with reckless abandon that will really endear him to Cleveland fans.
7. Oakland (5-11) - Navarro Bowman OLB - Oakland gets a steal here and really gets an opportunity to shore up their run defense with this pick.
8. Buffalo (6-10) - Ciron Black OT - They are really establishing some talented guys in the offensive trench. The winning should not be far behind. Levitre should be able to move inside.
9. Jacksonville^ (7-9) - Aaron Hernandez TE - They missed out on Tebow but getting Hernandez in round 3 is a nice consolation prize.
10. Chicago^ (7-9) - Demario Alexander WR - Athletic freak who can jump out of the gym. Should be a great red zone target
11. Miami (7-9) - Ricky Sapp OLB - While even i find it unlikely that Miami goes LB with each of its top 3 picks in the draft, seeing Ricky Sapp available here would just be too much for Miami to not go for. With Sapp and Jerry Hughes and Crowder and McClain, this team is full of highly talented youth.
12. San Francisco (8-8) - Arthur Jones DE - Going to push Balmer or take his spot.
13. Denver (8-8) - Mike Neil DE - Another piece to the 3-4 Mike Neil is too good of a player to pass on.
14. New York Giants (8-8) - Trevard Lindley CB - New York had a pitiful pass defense in 2009. Adding Mays and Lindley should give them 2 new starers. If Kenny Phillips can return to form, this position of weakness can become a strength.
15. Tennessee^ (8-8) - Jordan Shipley WR - great college production - might be able to help the Titans move the ball downfield and remove some pressure from Kenny Britt.
16. Carolina^ (8-8) - Dennis Pitta TE - There is no WR who can really help the Panthers at this point, and there is no QB who is worth drafting right now. For this reason I think Carolina drafts Pitta in an effort to have some receiving weapons besides Smith and Decker. Pitta will be a great target over the middle for whomever is the QB.
17. Pittsburgh (9-7) - Allen Bailey DE - Physically Bailey reminds me of Aaron Smith who has proven to be a rock on the Dline in Pittsburgh for a long time.
18. Atlanta^ (9-7) - Javier Arenas CB - Atlanta has two glaring issues to me, DE and CB. While Arenas might not be a starter from day one, he will be an impact player. Arenas is a a great tackler and an amazing return guy.
19. Houston^ (9-7) - Nate Allen FS - Texans need a Playmaker at FS and I think Nate Allen is that guy.
20. Cleveland - from New York Jets* (9-7) - Tyson Alualu DE - Corey Williams will either be replaced or pushed by this pick. Shawn Rodgers deserves some help and his talent is going to waste without it.
21. Baltimore* (9-7) Daryl Washington ILB - Someone needs to be groomed to take over for Ray Lewis. Washington seems to be a LB who is a good leader and does everything you could want.
22. Arizona* (10-6) - Dan LeFevour QB - This guy can play football. Good Arm strength, good accuracy, good footwork and he has some wheels. He has thrown the ball an absolute ton thru his 4 seasons at Central Michigan. He seems to be seasoned and have ice water in his veins. I put LeFevour right up there with Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy as far as being ready to run a team as a rookie. His arm strength might not ever be mistaken with Jamarcus Russells, but how far did that get him?
23. Green Bay* (11-5) - Kareem Jackson CB - Jackson plays CB the way that the Packers like with tough physical in your face press coverage. Tramon Williams may be best suited as a Nickel guy or Jackson can learn in the slot.
24. Cincinnati* (10-6) - Amari Spievey Cb - Bengals have some good starting corners but the depth is very thin after that.
25. Oakland - from New England* (10-6) - Tony Washington OT - Small program prospect with huge measureables.
26. Philadelphia* (11-5) - Joe Pawelek ILB Non Stop motor, Philly had to trade for a MLB Last season, but Witherspoon can play the outside too. Pawelek makes philly a much stronger run defense if they can find a way to get him on the field.
27. Dallas* (11-5) - Llmarr Johnson DT - Generates a ton of pressure and I think that he might translate to a pretty good 3-4 DE.
28. Minnesota* (12-4) Sean Lee ILB - EJ Henderson has another huge injury and nobody can be sure if he will be back, or even back to form. Minnesota has a small window (assuming Brett returns) and need to protect themselves the MLB position.
29. San Diego* (13-3) - Desmon Briscoe WR - Very raw prospect who probably shouldnt have come out. A very good team will draft him and let him ease his way into the rotation.
30. Indianapolis* (14-2) - Austen Lane DE - A Division II prospect who has been compared to Justin Tuck, a pass rusher like Lane would be a gift. A team like Indy can afford to work him in slow and let the game come to him.
31. New Orleans* (13-3) - Anthony Dixon RB - No chance in my mind that reggie Bush comes back at 8 million per season so a running back will be targeted in this draft. A guy like Dixon can do it all and will be able to help the team in a RB rotation right away.
