2011 Buffalo Bills Bandwagon Thread (1 Viewer)

I actually think Stevie gets tagged. And I wasn't sure how I felt about it before but now I think it's perfect if we tag him. I don't want to see us sign him to a long term deal if he is going to continue to be a complete idiot. This way we have him for one year and if he continues to do stupid things then we let him go next year. But if he has another good season and shows some sign of maturity then we lock him up.

And as far as Bell goes, I heard Nix doesn't like how he can't stay healthy. Plus there are rumblings that our LT next year is going to possibly be Hairston. As long as Fitz is back there then our line is going to look a lot better in pass protection than it really is. I'm not saying Fitz is a great QB or anything, but he deserves to get a lot of the credit for not getting sacked often.

That's funny. Looks like I might be wrong.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Bills are "on the verge" of signing free agent Stevie Johnson to a five-year contract. It will be interesting to see whether Johnson gets significantly more than the five-year, $35 million offer Pierre Garcon reportedly turned down from the Colts. The contract agreement would allow the Bills to avoid a last-minute franchise tag ahead of Monday's 4PM ET deadline. Johnson turns 26 in July. The five-year deal would keep him under control through his age-30 campaign. Mar 4 - 11:06 PMSource: Adam Schefter on Twitter

Yeah, pretty funny that that news broke just after I went on a long rant assuming the Bills weren't going to get a deal done.

I certainly understand your hesitation about signing Stevie long-term. Maybe I'm just a sucker, but I feel like at his core, Stevie is a team player that doesn't want to let his teammates down. He just happens to also be an idiot as well. I'm hoping that getting paid maybe reduces his on-field self-promotion a bit. The guy desperately wants to be treated like a young stud WR. Hopefully paying him like one will alleviate his need to act like a child.

Stevie Johnson signed a five-year, $36.25 million deal that includes $19.5 million guaranteed.
seems like a good deal to me. they needed to keep him around.

I think we got a little home town discount. To my thinking this speaks volumes as to what the players are thinking. We are heading in the right direction.

In Buddy we trust.

According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, "it is believed" that the Bills are interested in free agent Vincent Jackson even after Monday's re-signing of Stevie Johnson. The Bills appear to be going all-in on Ryan Fitzpatrick, intending to surround him with big-time playmakers and give him the best chance to succeed. The Bills have plenty of cap room for a run at Jackson despite the Johnson deal. Jackson's preference, of course, is to stay in San Diego. But the Bills, and likely the Bears, will push hard for V-Jax if he's still unsigned by March 13. Mar 5 - 8:45 PM

I would love getting Jackson, but we need help on the defensive side of the ball. The biggest and best player the Bills could possibly get would be Mario Williams. Imagine him playing RDE next to Kyle Williams and Dareus? I doubt we could get him, but I think adding Mario Williams would make our team so much better.

I agree, but the number that Mario is going to get will be close to Julius Peppers money. I doubt we'd spend that much.

Is anyone else a little sad that with all this Greg Williams talk, the Bills were rewarded with a 17-31 record during his tenure? If the Bills get any blowback from this, it'd have been nice to at least have a winning season.

Wait a minute, was Greg Williams the Head Coach when a Bill went low and tore Tom Brady's ACL?

Wasn't that Pollard when he was on KC?A patriot went low on one of our QB's. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

Mike Mularkey was Buffalo's head coach when it happened and it was Pollard in Kansas City that delivered the hit. But other than that, you nailed it.

Oh that's right, just remembered it was a cheap shot.

If you notice at the end of the statement I added a question-mark. That means i'm unsure, but just an idea...you jack^$^.

I love Vincent Jackson, but he'd be a terrible fit in Buffalo with Fitz at QB.
Agreed. I don't understand that one at all. And I just can't imagine the Bills dropping another $40M on another WR.
Marques Colston was mentioned by Chris Brown as a sleeper candidate for the Bills. I could definitely see that.
I would actually prefer Meachem. He is more of what we need. We need someone on the outside that can stretch the field and Meachem does that. He would be a great number two WR in our offense. Plus he would be much cheaper than these other options. I think he is a guy the Bills should target.

I hope Blackmon falls to Bills. Maybe it will happen???

Looks like Scott Chandler has been re-signed.

Yeah, my guess is that this will be met with s collective yawn across most of the NFL and blogosphere, but Chandler is a good fit for what the Bills want to do. They certainly need some playmakers on both sides of the ball, but when you let guys like Chandler go it just creates more holes and depth issues. Sigmund Bloom seems to be almost mocking the signing, but if they let him go, then what do they have? The TE prospects in the draft aren't too exciting and they have more urgent needs anyway. And there aren't any guys in FA that would be a big upgrade. Chandler was a huge redone threat early in the sseason. He had an injury and Fitz got the busted ribs and his production dropped. But I think it's a good signing as long as it was for a reasonable price. If the Bills really are targeting a big time FA WR and get one, they can take a very good defensive player in the draft and be that much closer to competing the whole season. They've created depth, now they need a few playmakers. They could go the other way too of course. Sign Mario Williams and then draft Michael Floyd or Justin Blackmon.

really? where?I don't think he's anything special, but he's a lot better than what they've had and fits the offense pretty well. Can't try to fill every hole in the draft or free agency, but they can still look to upgrade if the opportunity presents itself. I haven't seen any contract terms but I don't think he should have been expensive to keep. Can't keep letting players walk and expect to ever improve. Even if he becomes a backup at some point, that's quality depth that this team has lacked.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong and he was being serious. If so, my bad:

@SigmundBloom: Another adequate player secured by BUF. Huzzah! RT @RavensInsider

TE Scott Chandler with Bills for two more seasons, per agent, Rick Smith

he said he's adequate and I'd agree. don't think he'll ever be an above average starter at the TE spot but he's good enough and worth keeping.they re-signed Ruvell Martin too.

So the Bills have now officially reached the point where we get made fun of for re-signing decent starters. :noted:

Bills re-signed Kirk Morrison to a 2 year deal. I like Morrison as a leader and lockerroom guy, but he really didn't contribute a lot last year and I'd rather see someone else starting out there. Although maybe the switch to the 4-3 will make a difference? Definitely mixed feelings on this one for me.

I do like that there seems to be a really nice core of guys that seem to really LOVE playing for the Bills and with the other guys around them. They've totally embraced the whole BillsMafia thing. The talent level isn't quite there yet, but it's clear that they're finally building something and that kind of attitude and passion can actually entice free agents. There have already been several instances of Bills like Stevie Johnson reaching out to guys like Vincent Jackson and other free agents. So maybe Kirk Morrison doesn't end up with awesome on-field production, but the other guys on the defense seem to rally around him and he's ALL over the media. His value may be in talking the Bills up as a franchise on the rise and selling it to top talent in the FA market and with members of the media. That kind if impact could payoff 10 times what he's worth on the field.

Morrison is an experienced vet who has been productive in the past. I'm not sure he's the answer, but he's better than anyone else they had and he was signed to a cheap enough contract that he can still provide depth if someone else beats him out. He didn't get a chance to do much last year but he wasn't really expected to either. From the Buffalo News:

OLB spot secured; Bills ink MorrisonMarch 9, 2012 - 12:24 PM | 1 commentThe Buffalo Bills have found their prospective starting strong-side outside linebacker. The team announced the re-signing of Kirk Morrison today.Morrison, 6-foot-2 and 247 pounds, has the size to handle the position on the edge of the front seven, and he has 95 starts in his seven-year career. He was signed by the Bills last August as insurance in the 3-4 defense behind inside linebacker Nick Barnett and outside linebacker Chris Kelsay. Both Barnett and Kelsay stayed healthy all year. Morrison played only 55 snaps all season. However, if Barnett had gotten hurt, the Bills would have desperately needed Morrison. In the new 4-3 defense of coordinator Dave Wannstedt, Kelsay moves back to his defensive end spot and Barnett moves to the weak-side outside linebacker spot, essentially the position he played most of last year.Morrison's deal is for two years. Indications are it's a tad under $3 million in total value and could be worth $4 million overall if he hits all incentives. He started all but one game of his first six years in the NFL, the first five for Oakland and the next for Jacksonville.---Mark Gaughan
