2011 Lockout - How Would It Affect Underclassmen? (1 Viewer)

Was chatting with someone about the 2011 draft class the other day and made the comment that if I were an underclassman and there was no CBA in place at the time of the draft I might stay for my senior year - that playing at the NCAA level would be better for my long-term development than getting drafted and effectively being out of football for a year.

There are a lot of quality prospects this year if they declare. Anyone have an informed opinion about what underclassmen are going to do if there's a lockout?

I think that they would be crazy assuming to stay in school assuming they are still using the current CBA. It is very likely that there will be some form of pay slotting with the new draft, and this would lead to a lot less money for the rookies.

As a Bama fan, I've often wondered this. Bama has two high quality NFL prospects, Ingram and Julio. If I was Ingram, I would go pro regardless. Another year can only hurt his draft prospects. If I was Julio Jones, I'd stay in school. The QB next year for Bama has a much bigger arm than McElroy, and if Julio continues the amazing stretch he's been on the last month and does it for a whole year, he could be a top 5 pick.

It will be very interesting to see what these guys do.

One question I do have is whether these kids that get drafted will get any money. They won't if there is no CBA, right? So they take the risk of sitting on their hands for an entire year with no money and no football. Not good, right?

If it were me, I'd stay in school and get my degree, since there are no guarantees that I would get any money.

Don't they need to declare in January -- about two months before the CBA expires? There seems to be no way at all for them to know if there will be a CBA in place, right?

If they declare and there's a lockout, would the NCAA take them back?

That would require the NCAA to care about the players. No, once they declare they will be out of college football. That's why I think it's likely that few will declare this year.

Declaring for the draft after this year doesn't change that though does it? Do you think teams will sign their rookies under the old slotting system if there's no new CBA and a rookie cap is almost guaranteed in the future?
