2011 Texans Off -season thread (1 Viewer)

Came across this while looking for a site that would have Texans press releases on updates to the depth chart.

NFL Rushing and TD Leader, Arian Foster, to Host National Radio ShowWeekly, Hour-Long Show to Air on Yahoo! Sports Radio NetworkHOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Texans’ All-Pro Running Back, Arian Foster, announced an exclusive partnership with KGOW 1560 AM "The Game" and Yahoo! Sports Radio Network for the 2011 NFL season. The “Arian Foster Show” will air Thursday nights at 6 p.m. CST on more than 180 stations nationwide and Sirius Satellite Radio. The new show will feature exclusive insights from one of the most thoughtful and outspoken players in the NFL. Foster’s show will cover topics including: a behind-the-scenes look at the Texans and the NFL; commentary and thoughts regarding upcoming games; interviews with notable Texans and their opponents; and insightful discussion and debate with network hosts, Bob Berger and Craig Shemon. “Arian Foster, The Most Interesting Man in the NFL.”“This show will be about football--from the insider’s perspective. Anyone who knows me knows that I call it like I see it. I am a serious football player and an avid student of the game. Fans around the country want to hear a forthright and honest take on what is going on around the league so they will get that,” said Foster. “But I am more than a football player. I am a father, a poet and a free-thinker, so we are going to get into some other cool things as our discussions take us wherever they will. This show is definitely not going to be your run-of-the-mill football ‘talking-head’ kind of thing. This show will be edgy, fun and unlike anything sports fans have heard before. I have opinions about practically everything and I am not afraid to share them.”In addition to the weekly “Arian Foster Show,” Sports Radio 1560 “The Game” will air a call-in show with John Granato every Monday morning during the season at 8:05 a.m. CST featuring Foster. On Tuesdays at noon, Foster and well-known, sports pundit, Sean Pendergast, will produce a live, 30-minute local show every from a Houston eatery.“Arian is a big-time talent, both on and off the field. We are thrilled to have him on 1560 ‘The Game’ and on Yahoo! Sports Radio,” said David Gow, president of Yahoo! Sports Radio.

Caldwell and Studdard both out with ankle injuries, expected to miss a lot of time according to Kubiak.

ETA: Also, Kubiak said that Casey and Lestar Jean impressed him, and Jean will move up to get some more reps.

Houston Texans tweet:

Coach Kubiak: "Johnathan Joseph is back to work...Paul Williams was back on the field today."

For those that did not see the game, Ben Tate looked amazing, and he was making the quick one cut and go runs that you need

to to succeed in this offense. If anything were to happen to Foster, I think Tate would fill his role very nicely.

For fantasy players who have the roster space, I would definitely handcuff Tate with Foster.

Was great to see Tate out there and looking good after that bad injury last year. I know "if ifs and buts were candy and nuts" but it's interesting to think what might have happened last year had Tate not gotten injured and what the competition might have been like between the 2. Foster looks to be on a whole 'nother level now though with the leaping over one defender on one big run and then juking that safety out of his shoes. Tate was more like a pinball but showed a lot of ability to shed defenders and break tackles. Between Tate & Ward and Obgania (sp?) RB is looking pretty deep for us.

Manning getting beat deep by the 2nd string was worrisome although it might have been one of those "asleep at the wheel" moments since Brees had been pulled. Even though the big plays are starting to show up, I think the defense is definitely a long way from gelling.

I think Foster is significantly better than Tate still. Best vision in the NFL, more elusive than Tate, isn't lacking in power though Tate probably has the edge on him there. I think Foster may be better at breaking tackles, but I'd say he's a lot better at finding the hole in the first place. It's a great situation to be in for the Texans. I think fantasy owners are going to discount Derrick Ward too much though. Tate might ultimately be a better RB, but I won't be surprised if Ward is the main backup for much of the year, with Tate maybe getting a few series to see what he can do in real games. Blitz pickup is still a big deal and we haven't seen Tate yet against anything but simplified defensive game plans.

I agree with you that Ward will be the primary back-up for Foster this season with Foster healthy, because he is somewhat of a change of pace from Foster. But I think if an injury occurs to Arian than Tate is going to fill his role rather than Ward, because he runs more like you are supposed to in the Texans offense. That is assuming the injury occurred late enough in the season that Kubiak was comfortable enough with Tate being able to block blitzing linebackers.

I would agree about Foster looking better, just was a thinking out loud what might have happened last year. Those that were talking yesterday about Tate threatening for time I think are way off base. Tate looks like a good fit, but he has a long way to go.

But it's good to know that we have a few capable guys to take pressure off or fill-in in a pinch. When has a Texans fan ever been able to say that?!?

Foster's vision to find the hole is unparalleled in the NFL. True that is o-line could part the ocean, but regardless of this, Foster has shown the ability to make the right read and get there in a flash.

He doesn't quite have the pure power of Peterson, or the speed of CJ, but Foster has that rare amalgamation of all talents that makes him a truly elite player.

Tate will definitely fill the role of Foster if Foster were to go down; but the prediction or hoping of injuries (by a-holes) is neither here nor there.

Foster will be the man.

I made the observation Saturday night, that it seems like recently that the Texans have a position that is perceived as a glaring hole, and by the end of that season it has turned into an embarrassment of riches. Last year it was running back, and we come out of it with the league leading rusher and have 3 backups in camp who are all capable (plus Tate looking good). This year I think OLB is looking that way. It was a position that everyone was saying the Texans would need to address. I think Barwin has looked great. Mario I think will still excel. And I think Reed, Nading, and maybe even Braman could be solid starters if needed, based on how they looked at the practices I saw as well as the first two preseason games.

Maybe we'll say the same about cornerback at the end of this year too, though I'm not that optimistic about it unless Jason Allen turns out to be a solid 2nd corner. I just don't see Kareem ever being more than a nickle or dime player. He lacks speed and ball skills, and those are hard things to teach.

Head Coach Gary Kubiak(on if there is any new health news) “No, pretty much the same today, Johnathan Joseph back to work. We were real light today just getting moving. We’re going to start our week tomorrow. Joseph was back on the field today. Paul Williams was back on the field today, so a few bodies came back, but other than that we’re still working the same way.” (on if RB Derrick Ward is closer to getting cleared to play) “Derrick did practice today and should be cleared here any time. We expect him to be available this weekend.” (on if he’s worried about ILB DeMeco Ryans) “No, I think it’s just taking some time. It (his elbow) got really swollen on him and just getting the flexibility back and going through the rehab process. We were being smart last week. Today, you all can see we didn’t do much at all. It’ll be day-to-day with him, but I don’t have any doubt that he will be back sometime soon.” (on his assessment of training camp) “I think it’s been good. Obviously the heat’s been very, very difficult, but I think our football team is in excellent shape. I like the way we’re holding up as far as our wind and stuff watching us play. We’re basically done today and get on our routine this week the way we do things in a normal season, so trying to get guys ready for the season.” (on how long the first team will play against the 49ers on Saturday) “My first answer would be three quarters. We’ll see. Obviously we try to play a little bit more and get close to full game. We turn around and play Minnesota on Thursday, so I’ll play them as much as a possibly can this weekend.” (on if there’s any update on WR Lestar Jean) “He’s got a pretty banged up shoulder. They’re in an evaluation process right now. You’re not going to see him out here in the next couple days, but should know more here toward the end of this week.” (on WR Devard Darling) “He’s got some ability. He’s played in this League. He’s way behind knowing what we do, so that’s tough for him, but we’re trying to settle him down to see if he can help us. He’ll play some this weekend. He’ll play a lot of football next week.” (on how important Saturday’s game will be for CB Johnathan Joseph) “Yeah, he needs to get back out there. He looked great during camp and obviously the groin has held him up a little bit. He was back out today. We’ll pick it up each day with him and hopefully he’s ready to carry his load on Saturday night, but he needs to play.” (on how important it is to see CB Johnathan Joseph through a number of reps to see where he’s at) “Yeah, it’s very important. At the same time at the end of the week, you got to decide okay how many is it? How many reps do you want to see from him? I don’t think you throw him out there and play him three quarters. We’ll see how he practices throughout the week.” (on the update on ILB DeMeco Ryans) “Just like I told them, it’s day-to-day. We’re trying to get the swelling out of it, trying to get the flexibility back and trying to be smart at the same time. We’ve got time. We’re not going to do anything crazy with him.” (on the update on NT Earl Mitchell) “He missed today. He’ll be day-to-day. He’s got a banged up knee and we’ll see, but he’ll be day-to-day.”

I don't know if you were referring to me when you talk about predicting or hoping for injuries, but just to be clear, I was doing neither. My only purpose in talking about a possible injury to Foster, was that fantasy players would probably want to look at Tate as a handcuff to Foster rather than Ward as a handcuff. Ward will probably get more work than Tate with Foster healthy, but I think Tate gets more work than Ward if Foster gets hurt.

No, I wasn't referencing you... Just referencing ppl in general, who hope for injuries so their backup/stolen handcuff gets playing time.

I just completed my big$ draft and reached like a fiend to get Tate, because in my league full of snakes (sharp drafters) I knew someone would grab him before it came back to me at 10.12/11.01... Yes, I took him at 9.01

I agree, Tate gets the work with Foster out (which I hope does not happen).

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips watched over the tape from the Saints game and liked what he saw from Williams."When you look at the game; he had three pressures in the game against (Saints QB) Drew Brees," Phillips said. "I mean, you're not going to sack Drew Brees every play. He had three big pressures against him that in the limited time he played. He's getting there."

Despite Ben Tate's big game in the second week of preseason, coach Gary Kubiak confirmed Tuesday that Arian Foster remains the Texans' every-down running back.

"One thing about the running back position, when you have a great one, they need it 25 times," said Kubiak. "For the most part, when Arian’s at his best, he’s playing three snaps to the other guys' one."

It promises to be the most anticipated debut of the Texans' preseason and, as of Tuesday, cornerback Johnathan Joseph was on track to make his first start this weekend in San Francisco. After practicing consecutive days, there were no setbacks as Joseph recovers from a groin injury."He looked good," Gary Kubiak said. "I had him work outside full-time. When we came back in, it was my understanding he wasn't supposed to work inside. I looked up, he took the first play and so I about went nuts, got him out of there."He took a step forward. If he keeps going, he'll get his playing time on Saturday."
Inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans (elbow) didn't practice Tuesday, and neither did defensive tackle Damione Lewis. Offensive linemen Antoine Caldwell (ankle) and Kasey Studdard (ankle) missed as well. Running back Steve Slaton (hamstring) ran on a side field and didn't participate in drills.

Here is an article interviewing Football Outsiders about their prediction that the Texans have the best chance to win the AFC South. I found the parts of it that were most interesting were their discussions of how different parts of the Texans fared last year.

Some snippets...

[Mario] Williams notched 34 hurries in just 13 games, good for seventh in the NFL, and plays the run as well as any NFL defensive end. Any attempt to blame him for the rest of Houston’s defensive problems is spurious reasoning at best and woefully uninformed at worst.

...

We use DVOA, or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, as a measure to see just how good or bad a unit is over the course of a season. DVOA breaks down the entire season play-by-play, comparing success on each play to the league average based on a number of variables including down, distance, location on field, current score gap, quarter, and opponent quality.

If we throw out the games that Houston played against Tennessee with Rusty Smith and Jacksonville with Trent Edwards, Houston’s pass DVOA allowed of 50.5% would be the worst in NFL history by over 10%. As is, the Houston pass defense allowed a 37.0% DVOA, which was the worst in the NFL.

Houston hasn’t ever had an above-average defensive DVOA, and outside of 2009, has finished in the bottom four of defensive DVOA in each of the last six years.

...

We don’t see Arian Foster as a huge regression case. We don’t have him repeating his 2010 season, but there is plenty to be optimistic about with him long-term. He led the league in our game charting project’s broken tackles figure last season, making 45 defenders look silly. Houston found ways to use him better in the passing game over the second-half of the season.

...

Matt Schaub isn’t regarded as an elite quarterback, but last year’s statistical profile shows that he didn’t get a lot of help from the non-Andre Johnson players around him. He led the league in passes marked as “Thrown Away” by our game charters, meaning he was seeing quite a bit of pressure. Meanwhile, his receivers were tied for second in the NFL in dropped passes. Those are a couple of good signs that his “pedestrian” (if you can call them that) numbers last year, as compared to 2009, didn’t have all that much to do with how he played.

Gotta admit I am getting a kick out of reading the Foster threads. Who would have thought so many people would be concerned with a Texans player (that's not Andre) and that he would dominate the headlines a week before the season started? I imagine Kubiak will come down hard on him for the MRI tweet considering he is so completely against disclosing injury information.

Is it time for the "Official In-Season Thread?"

Yeah, I will set it up this weekend after we know the real roater. Just to note, I don't see myself being on top of it as closely this year ( I know I wasn't with the off-season) . Just too much real life (work, writing, aging parents, etc).

I caught Kubiak's latest press conference on the radio. Not a lot said, but a few of the more noteworthy...

Slaton not playing was a late decision by Kubiak. He only practiced twice of which one was only a walk through and Kubiak didn't feel it was wise to send him out there.

Didn't really give any helpful info on the RB situation. Just said that Foster is day to day.

Said that anything about Foster tweeting his MRI they'd handle in house and wouldn't go into that further.

When asked about players that stood out to him against the Vikings, he mentioned Leinart and then poured the praise on Tim Jamison. Said it was something like a treat to watch the tape of him.

Later on someone asked about Bryant Johnson specifically and he repeated what he said previously. He's a proven veteran and he thinks he is someone the team can use. He mentioned that he already knew some of the Texans terminology and so they were able to work him into the preseason game. My reading between the lines - further confirms to me that Johnson is probably going to be the 4th WR this year.

Said he was pleasantly surprised how fast the team has picked up Wade's defense.

Said he felt they did well in man coverage which was led to Ponder being able to scramble when the rush didn't keep him contained.

That's all I can remember. I'm sure they'll have quotes out in awhile.

David Anderson was cut by Denver. I wonder if the Texans might go re-sign him after not seeming happy with what they had in camp for a 4th and 5th WR.

http://www.chron.com/sports/texans/article/Texas-waive-Ogbonnaya-Keo-26-others-2154415.php

Safety Shiloh Keo, punter Brad Maynard and running back Chris Ogbonnaya were among the players waived by the Texans on Saturday when they reduced their roster from 80 to 52 – one short of the maximum 53.

General manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak will continue to rework the roster while the Texans prepare for the Sept. 11 opener against Indianapolis.

Among the veteran players kept on the roster were Steve Slaton as the fourth running back and Bryant Johnson as the fourth receiver.

Keo, the fifth-round pick from Idaho, didn’t make the team as the fifth safety. He’s a candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Because they waived Maynard, the Texans will be in the market for a new punter.

Ogbonnaya, who led the team in rushing in preseason with 54 carries for 192 yards, also could be placed on the practice squad.

Linebacker Cheta Ozougwu, a seven-round pick, was waived injured along with free agent receiver Terrence Toliver.

Saturday’s moves mean the Texans kept seven of their eight draft choices: defensive end J.J. Watt, outside linebacker Brooks Reed, cornerback Brandon Harris, cornerback Roc Carmichael, quarterback T.J. Yates and offensive tackle Derek Newton.

Carmichael, a fourth-round pick, didn’t play in preseason because of a shoulder injury.

Outside linebacker Bryan Braman, who signed as an undrafted free agent and recorded a team-high 2 ½ sacks in preseason, made the team.

Notable veterans waived were linebacker Xavier Adibi, defensive end Damione Lewis, receiver Dorin Dickerson, tight end Anthony Hill, receiver Trindon Holliday, safety Quentin Demps, safety Torri Williams and linebacker Stanford Keglar.

Others placed on waivers were running back Javarris Williams, fullback Zac Pauga, receiver Jeff Maehl, receiver Derrick Townsel, offensive tackle Cole Pemberton, center Cody Wallace, center Howard Barbieri, offensive tackle Peter Hendrickson, defensive end Scooter Berry, defensive end John Graves, guard Andrew Gardner, linebacker Mister Alexander, nose tackle Guy Miller, outside linebacker Steven Friday and snapper Scott Albritton and linebacker Matt Marcorelle,

Investigators are at the scene now -- a home in the 2000 block of Grand River in Richmond that belongs to Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith.

According to neighbors, there was a large party at Smith's house last night. They had valet parking and neighbors could hear loud music.

This morning around 9:30am, the Richmond Fire Department was called out to the home. Officials at the scene said a dead body was found at the bottom of the pool.

The age and gender of the victim have not been released.

We have a crew at the scene. Please stay with Eyewitness News and abc13.com for more information as it becomes available.

Fort Bend County authorities are investigating a suspected drowning at the home of Houston Texans' defensive end Antonio Smith.

Authorities are at Smith's $1 million, five-acre estate in Richmond, where there was reportedly a large party Saturday night. Smith tweeted about a pool party Saturday, including one line that said, "Hot and sunny out at 94's paradise ranch cowboy boots ninja mask and speedo's."

The Richmond Fire Department was called out to the home this morning, where officials said a dead body was found at the bottom of the pool.

Fort Bend Sheriff's Office said the victim was an adult male. They would not provide any other details.

http://www.chron.com/sports/texans/article/Texans-fill-roster-sign-7-to-practice-squad-2155491.php

The Texans filled out their roster by claiming offensive lineman Thomas Austin on waivers from New England.

The Texans also signed seven players to their practice squad, including safety Shiloh Keo, running back Chris Ogbonnaya and receiver Trindon Holliday.

Austin, who can play guard and center, gives them nine offensive lineman. He played at Clemson, signed with Minnesota as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and spent the season on the Patriots' practice squad.

The roster spot was available because the Texans were down to 52, one shy of the maximum.

The Texans will have to make another roster move this week after they find a punter to replace Brad Maynard, who was waived on Saturday.

Besides Keo, Ogbonnaya and Holliday, the Texans signed linebacker Mister Alexander, center Howard Barbieri, guard Andrew Gardner and receiver Jeff Maehl to the practice squad. They have one opening remaining to reach the maximum of eight.

Also, former Texans linebacker Xavier Adibi was claimed on waivers by Minnesota

Battle Red Blog reporting that the Texans released Jesse Nading to re-sign punter Brett Hartman, who they had released last week.

One positive there is that Hartman has had training camp working with Rackers as the holder. I was a little concerned about this first week with the Texans having to break in someone new there.
