A few of us are in a heated debate as to how we are going to manage our draft if there is no 2011 NFL season and I was curious what everyone else is doing. I know lots of leagues have already done their rookie drafts or are in the process of it now, however, we don't do ours until mid/late August. On top of that, another aspect that separates our league from most others is that our draft isn't composed of just rookies. We don't allow any waiver moves after Week 6 so it's frequent that players develop from that time on that are worthy of drafting high the following year (Miles Austin is one example).

Hopefully by mid/late August we won't need to worry about this but here are the basis of the two sides if I could get some opinions on:

Side 1: Have a 2011 draft regardless of there being a season or not. Lottery will determine the 2012 draft order (if there is no season).

Side 2: Disagrees with lottery draft concept and wants no 2011 draft (assuming no NFL)and have a 2012 draft with a larger pool of players to be drafted.

The lottery is as fair as any other I guess, but the possible ramifications of one of the very top teams getting the #1 pick, and getting the next Adrian Peterson or whomever, I wouldn't do it.

I like the idea of the second possibility, and seems to me to be the most equitable. One problem could be, I suppose, that late 1sts become a lot more valuable. Maybe AJ Green is 1.8 next year, and if I had traded away a late 1st for a marginal player, I might be a little bit PO'd. Not really a problem, just good luck for the guy who moved to acquire multiple picks.

Yes, we do have a team that had traded away their 1st and 3rd round picks for Miles Austin so that is certainly another factor. However, I feel that it's the chance you take when you trade away your future picks. All I know is that a lot can change in one year for these 2011 rookies, especially with there being a 2012 draft before the 2011 rookies even have a chance to play and prove themselves. The argument that the top pick has a clear advantage getting to select from a larger pool of players can be said about the person who picks at 1.10, so that argument is null and void.

Unfortunately, the majority of my league members that are involved in this debate disagree with me.

Our league will have the 2011 draft as of today. YOu dont have a clue when the season will begin and getting together can be tough at the last second. They could start the season in week 2. Who knows

We have not decided on 2012 yet but it will be

1. Some sort of lottery but it will go serpentine instead of how we regularly do it with same each round

2. We will have an auction of picks

So owners know this and trading for 2012 is at their risk. YOu are taking your chances

We have had 1 trade so far. A owner with a bad team traded his 1st next year for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th from the defending champs who are an quickly aging team. So bascially the 1.3 for 1.12/2.12 etc. He also got the guy to throw in 40$ cash if we go to bidding(The word is 100$ per team if we vote for this). So no season and the one owner who risked a ton to get the maybe high pick. He could give up 1.1, 2.16, 3.1 etc for the 1.16 or is down to 60 cash if no season. But he took the risk. Not many others are willing to take this chance at this point. I know the team getting the picks offered up 1st/2nd or money in 2012 for a late 1st rounder this year but had no takers

There is no way you should skip over the draft if there is no season in August. Even if nothing is done in august I would still say there is a 85% chance a deal would get done by the end of Sep. If there is no season, then do a NBA style lottery, with the worst teams from two years ago getting better odds.

Oh, I kind of like the idea of using the draft position from 2 years ago instead of lottery. Thanks for the input!
