Has any other Madden cover player lost their starting job the following season?
Not sure why everyone assumes it's a joke. First, the cities with players competing in the bracket are the ones that really drive the vote. Cleveland pushed hard for fans to vote for Hillis. Also, Hillis had a good year and most people who follow the NFL appreciate his hard-nosed, blue collar style. He's a very humble, likeable player. Hillis might not be the league MVP, but I would hardly conclude it took a "joke" to get him on the cover in this type of voting format.
As opposed to all the white collar, pretty boy running backs? You don't get to become a starting running back in the NFL without being tough, and working hard. It's the most punishing position in sports. I'm just saying, I don't believe I've ever heard a black player's style described as hard nosed or blue collar.'Third said:Also, Hillis had a good year and most people who follow the NFL appreciate his hard-nosed, blue collar style.

preposterous. First of all, you need to include the Milwaukee metro area in that, as the packers are beloved by basically the whole state of Wisconsin, not just green bay. Secondly, the packers aren't just a regional franchise, but a national one. After the Steelers and the Cowboys, I would guess they have the most fans nationally. Their popularity extends far beyond the Green Bay metro era.Green Bay'Lucky Lefty said:I would just like to know one thing.. Why in the hell did Hillis get? To have him beat out Rodgers... Really!?! Not from what I've heard. A good percentage of Western Wisconsin are apparently Vikes fans (even before the exodus of Lord Favre)preposterous. what's so difficult to understand about that?
I guess there's really no way to really prove or disprove that. However in a very unscientific study (my observations), Id' say besides the two teams that you mentioned (that are likely far ahead) the following teams also have a bigger national following than the Packers:Raiders (#3 by far imo)First of all, you need to include the Milwaukee metro area in that, as the packers are beloved by basically the whole state of Wisconsin, not just green bay. Ridiculous. There were only 1 million votes cast in the finals TOTAL. That means Hillis received about 650,000 votes (definitely not all unique voters). There is some huge nonsense going on in this thread, so I'm going to sort it out. Feel free to quote or respond to me if you disagree with what I'm saying.
1. Hillis getting the cover was DEFINITELY a racial thing. Anyone trying to deny this is lying to themself. You can come up with tons of reasons for why he got the vote other than that, like Cleveland's campaign to do it, but there's no way that Cleveland by themselves could have gotten Hillis past all those other players including Aaron Rodgers. Hillis won this because he is popular nationwide and had a large contingent of neutral parties vote for him, and his popularity is because he's a white running back.
You can keep lying to yourself, but I don't see why you're denying people like him and vote for him because he's a white running back. Nothing wrong with it, like I said, it's just the way it is.Ridiculous.There were only 1 million votes cast in the finals TOTAL. Metro Cleveland has 2.2 million alone. Arkansas, though not a huge state (2 million population), pushed the hometown boy heavily for more than a week and 99% of those votes went to Hillis. Plus, you likely had a very strong "anti-Vick" vote related to the dog-fighting stuff.
All in all, I would guess "race" is about 10th on the list of factors that propelled Hillis to victory.
