Doctor Detroit

Tigers have no chance to beat the defending champs, small chance to beat the Giants.

Poll coming later, but just pick the NL team.

who pitches game 2? does jimmy leave the rotation set? Verlander-fister-sanchez-max
some blog guy says this:Game One – Wednesday, October 24 – at NL Champion Justin Verlander is the no-brainer decision to start game one. It could be in St. Louis, or it could be in San Francisco, but it probably won’t matter either way. The Tigers will have the best pitcher in the game in line to start two of the first five games, and that’s a huge advantage. Game Two – Thursday, October 25 – at NL Champion You could make the argument here for either Doug Fister or Max Scherzer. I’ll pick Fister since he’s been Jim Leyland’s number two guy for the postseason. He wasn’t at his sharpest during his last outing in New York, but he still managed to 6.1 scoreless innings. Game Three – Saturday, October 27 – at Detroit I’ll pick Scherzer to be the starter for the first game in Detroit; he has seemed to be extremely comfortable pitching in the home ballpark. Max is also prone to shorter outings, so pitching him after the off day would allow for the entire bullpen to be available. Game Four – Sunday, October 28 – at Detroit It’s almost unfair that Anibal Sanchez is immediately penciled in as the number four pitcher – he’s been amazing during these playoffs – but Detroit’s starting pitching is that good. He’s only going to get the one start in the World Series, but would be available in relief later on.

I would probably leave the rotation the way it is, Verlander-Fister-Sanchez-Scherzer. Scherzer is probably the best and should be number 2, but it is close between all of them. Scherzer only downside is he strikes too many people out and as a result runs up his pitch count. Fister and Sanchez are more likely to be able to give us 8 full innings as a result. There is an argument to be made for pitching Sanchez. He is the only one who pitches better on the road than at home.

Scherzer is also prone to giving up some HRs. But ...nice 'problems' to have!

I don't think there is any doubt Leyland will leave the rotation as is. I think he wants to maximize the amount of rest Scherzer gets, and since he just pitched, I'd be surprised if he moves him up and tinkers with what has been working.Honestly, I think Sanchez was the most impressive of the 4 against the Yankees. He can't throw 130 pitches so he wasn't going to go as deep as Verlander, but he had total command of all his pitches and was cool as could be in a MUST-WIN game for the Yankees. Personally I'd rather see him in game two on the road than Fister, who was juggling base runners all night, but I don't think it'll happen.

As much as I think Delmon is a liability in the outfield, we don't have a legitimate number 5 hitter behind Prince except Delmon.

Ranks as one of the worst analysis of all-time. The Tigers are vulnerable because of their starting rotation.

MLB playoffs 2012: Tigers most vulnerable division winner

PUBLISHED Thursday, Oct 4, 2012 at 7:05 pm EDT

Anthony Witrado Sporting News

MLB’s postseason field is set, the slate is wiped clean and all participants start 0-0.

But just because the 10 playoff teams are back to equal by way of record does not mean they are all created equal. Over the course of the last 162 games we’ve seen plenty of reasons to like each club and plenty of reasons to instill doubt.

Among the six division winners, the teams that don’t have to worry about Friday’s do-or-die wild-card games, the club that boasts the best pitcher and the best hitter seems to be the ripest for a Division Series ouster.

The Detroit Tigers are carried by ace Justin Verlander and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, but they have a number of question marks and are facing a team with the strongest wind behind its sail entering the tournament, the Oakland A’s.

The rotation after Verlander is the main concern. Max Scherzer, Detroit's next-best starter, is dealing with a shoulder issue—his four shutout innings against the Kansas City Royals in the final regular-season game aren’t significant. Doug Fister, the next guy in line, hasn’t looked good against a contender since early August—quality starts against teams like the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and Royals also mean little.

Before I get blasted for criticizing the rotation and its league-leading 2.48 ERA in September and October, let it be known that Verlander made six starts and had a 1.93 ERA and Scherzer had six starts and had a 1.91 ERA. The other starters had a good-but-not-great 2.84 ERA and much of the staff's success came against the Indians, Twins and Royals.

What this staff does have going for it, especially Verlander and a healthy Scherzer, is that the A’s strike out a ton. Oakland set an AL record this season with 1,387 Ks.

As for the offense, it was middle of the pack in telling categories like OBP, OPS and weighted on-base average in September and October despite Cabrera’s Triple Crown run and contributions from Prince Fielder. The offense also had the benefit of facing some of the worst staffs the league has to offer in the Indians, Twins and Royals.

Like the pitching staff, the Tigers have something going for them against the A’s. They crushed Oakland’s top-notch pitching in two series this season to the tune of .298/.360/.453 with an .813 OPS. However, much of the offensive damage came in one 10-run output in May and one 12-run output in September.
Then again nearly everyone thought the Tigers and Cards were the worst of the playoff teams, ESPN had them rated 11th and 12th and CBS had them 10th and 12th. But Detroit's issues clearly was not their starting pitching.

I almost lean on giving Sanchez the ball in game 2 mainly because it is a road game and he has some experience against St. Louis. Really, I like all three options and a good case can be made for any rotation behind Verlander.

its amazing how different the 2012 tiger team is from the 2006 ws team. Only verlander and the coaching staff remain.

no pudge, no magglio, carlos guillen, kenny rodgers, bonderman, zumaya, todd jones, rodney, inge, craig monroe, marcus thames, granderson, sean casey all played big roles on that team.

You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em. ETA: The current team has the foundation of a mini-dynasty if they can fill in around the core.

I would much rather have defense and sacrifice some offense in the NL parks. But that's me. I'd start Berry, bat him second and move Dirks up to the 5 slot v. RHSP. I'd play small ball in the NL park's game 1 and 2, hope to steal one and then get home and have Delmon DH in games 3, 4 and, if necessary, 5.

Dirks would be good in the 5 slot. He had a great year, and he'd be tougher to double up. While they didn't play well against NY, both Laird and Avila could do as well as Delmon (based on regular season) in the 5 slot as well. But I like the Dirks idea.

I think it comes down to who you want pitching a potential game 7. I want Scherzer or Fister in that game, no offense to Anibal. Not that it'll go seven, Giants or Cards should have this wrapped up fairly quickly.

As Dr. D has made clear, the Tigers' chances in the WS are dismal, to say the least.

Does the NL game 7 help much? It certainly locks in the NL pitching rotation to a great degree.

Giants had the better regular season record, they deserve homefield advantage.

What is the deal with Bumgarner? Is he pretty much a bullpen option at this point or might we see him start game 1 or 2? Tigers suck against lefthanders, I'd think this would be a factor in the decision.

Probably a bullpen option at best. Opponents hit .302/.370/.509 against him in Sept/Oct and .385/.415/.667 in the postseason. I just don't think there's a lot of trust in his arm right now.I'm with you on this one, though. There's a pretty decent L/R split in Detroit's lineup (wOBAs of .316 and .334) and SF already has 3 lefties in their pen. Bumgarner has to be at least considered.

Much like the Oakland series, have to take game 1. If this goes 7 I'd bet hard against us, but think we can take it in 5 or 6. Must take game 1 though. :boxing:

Have been looking for World Series tickets for about a week now. Looks like prices in San Francisco are pretty similar, maybe a hair more but very close. They really price normal people out of these things don't they? Planning on having Game 5 tickets in hand before I leave DC on Saturday, and get game 4s via friends or at last minute.

:goodposting: I tried to get WS tickets for the Giants in 2010, but the prices were just way too outrageous. Hope you're able to go. :excited:

I have to think they try to pitch Vogelsong on short rest. The SF starters are not deep and they need to get two starts out of him.

Or take a chair and a scorecard and sit outside Comerica ...enjoy the sights and sounds and save your money.Really looking forward to the Cain/Scherzer match-up.

One of my daughters friends works at Comerica and handles all incoming deliveries..he said just hang around until the second inning or so and he will let anyone she brings up in one of the delivery doors. I had tickets for a game and watched them operate from the outside and the timing is perfect. They talk on cell phones on both sides until nobody is around..then the kids walk by the door..at the same instant he cracks the door and they slide in and disperse in different directions and then hook up in the corridor. All of my daughters friends have gone to every home playoff game so far and are going to every home WS game...they have to stand but stand but at least they are in the park. My older daughter went to at least 20 games this summer for free. The thing is that my daughter said she has seen 40-50 people come in this way from the other employees as well. So the attendance is higher than reported.

I like the Giants team better, they are playing well. But Verlander is the difference. Any chance he throws 1,4, and 7 like the real men used to?

I'll go Tigers in 6 regardless.
