Love mccann. He's 29 guys. Not old by any means. Huge upgrade. Perfect fit for the yanks
He'll be 33 before spring training of the third year of the five year deal.

It's an upgrade but is the upgrade worth this?

The Braves extended a qualifying offer to McCann before he hit free agency, so the Yankees would have to surrender their first-round pick (No. 18 overall) in order to sign him.
when have the yankees had a good 1st rd pick. Theres a ton of good free agents that will cost a 1st rd pickAnd 33 isnt old.
33 is old for a catcher who hasn't caught 135 games in 3 years.

good thing the AL has a DH. That should help. Plus maybe they can shift him to 1B at the end of Tex deal. One question, how many years away is Sanchez. I would think this kind of hinders his chances of making an imoact, no?

The first round pick the Yanks gave up to sign Soriano would have been Mike Trout.

Peralta to the Cards for four years and something more than 13mm a year seems to be imminent.

Not bad for the NL:

Carpenter - 3B

Peralta - SS

Holliday - LF

Adams - 1B

Craig - RF

Molina - C

Wong - 2B

Bourjos - CF (Jay against some righties)

Miller - P

38 year old Jose Molina resigns with Tampa Bay for 2/$4.5M. Maybe framing pitches is the new market inefficiency because he's coming off a .233./.290/.304 season.

I read the other day they had him at 2 WAR this season for pitch framing. Maybe I misread that but seems to be what I recall.Found it:

Marveling at his first season with the team, Bradley Woodrum published a study on DRaysBay speculating that Jose Molina was worth 2.5 wins above replacement simply by framing the strikezone, thanks to an estimated 24.4 runs prevented, and thereby a contender for Team MVP -- hence "Most Valuable Molina." Brad would receive harsh criticism in the comment section, and shortly after we found out he was incredibly wrong.

According to calculations by Max Marchi and further investigation by Ben Lindbergh, who dedicates much of his research to catcher framing, Jose Molina was able to prevent 50 runs from scoring over the course of the season, worthy of five wins above replacement -- double Woodrum's estimate, and again, using the strikezone alone.

I think you can also put Taveras in RF against tough lefties (shift Craig to 1B) and when Craig needs a break.
You know Oscar hits lefty, right?

thats insane

Mlbtraderumors:

Jhonny Peralta's new $53MM deal with the Cardinals could lead to changes to MLB's Joint Drug Agreement, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal writes. Peralta already served a 50-game suspension for his role in the Biogenesis scandal, but he's now getting a large contract just months later, one that dwarfs other recent contracts for players like Marlon Byrd and Melky Cabrera who also received PED suspensions. "We thought 50 games would be a deterrent. Obviously its not. So we are working on it again," Diamondbacks player representative Brad Ziegler tweeted today. Rosenthal writes that players are likely to raise the topic of harsher PED penalties at a players union meeting in December. Any changes would then have to be negotiated with MLB's owners.

Gotta think the clean guys are irate pissed off about the Peralta contract.

Yea, seems like take some PEDs, crack some home runs, take a suspension, then start cashing giant checks.

Not much downside for these guys

Considering the contracts being handed out right now, Peralta got a little bit above average deal, with maybe an extra year.

A's acquire lefty Fernando Abad from the Nats for non-prospect OF John Wooten.

Garrett Jones designated.

Yankees reportedly have a deadline on their Cano offer. Ball's in Jay-Z's court, I suppose.

What contracts are you talking about?
Pence 90/5

Lincecum 35/2

McCann 85/5

Hudson 23/2

Vargas 32/4

Byrd 16/2 with vesting option

Joe Smith 15.75/3

Javier Lopez 13/3

Hell even the Rays dished out 10.5/2 to Dejesus

There is a lot of FA money for teams to spend right now and they're spending it. And considering there were only 2 decent SS FAs, one of which received a qualifying offer, the Peralta signing seems like somewhat of a bargain.

So we are comparing hot piss tested Shortstops to clean OFers and pitchers?

Melky Cabrera's 2/$16mm also conveniently omitted.

I don't particularly like the Peralta contract, but I like it a hell of a lot better than most of the trades that were being thrown around. The Cards were NOT getting through this off-season with Pete Kozma as their starting SS, and everybody in MLB knew it. At this point, it looks like the cost of keeping Shelby Miller was a year and $15 million or so to Peralta. Feels like a bargain.

Many teams would be happy to have that cheater as their SS. Its not a terrible contract by any means in this day and age of overinflated deals.

This cano stuff is gonna get interesting.

Cano spotted in Detroit again today. Please send a leer jet for him stat!

What the hell are the Dodgers gonna do with their ridiculously overpaid outfielders? Puig has gotta play every day, and Gonzalez is at 1st, so there is nowhere for anyone to go. Crawford (4 years, 83 million), Kemp (6 years, 128 million), Ethier (4 years, 69 million).

how much money would they have to eat to move any of those guys?

Wow. If Yadi's agent ever finds out about this, DeWitt is going to have to sell the team to his catcher.

really? Where would they play kinsler?
Flip him to another team or play him at 3B I guess. Not gonna happen, no idea why Cano is in Detroit except maybe as a favor to Boras to make the Yankees nervous.

Cano's team had a meeting with the Mets. They are pissing in the wind. 7/175 is the number that seems right but in this market maybe 7/195.

Reds resign Manny Parra for 2/$5.5M. He was very effective against left handed batters but wasn't used as a LOOGY; right handed batters had more PAs against him in each of the past two years. Dusty haters could blame Baker for that but presumably Bryan Price had some say in how Parra was used.
