*** 2013 Official Philadelphia Eagles - NFC EAST CHAMPS*** (1 Viewer)

Foles numbers from his last 4 starts in 2012 up until before the Dallas game:

63% comp, 17TDs, 2INTS.

Why are you guys so irrational? Why erase everything he's done to date? Dude looked no worse than Tony Romo in that game. We still were in it until he bumped his head. It's only his 6th start. He's usually poised and efficient. Jeez, relax.

I'm sure he's going to get extended playing this year. I'm not done with him FWIW. I still want to see more from him.

Is it the last we've seen of Vick in eagles green or does he go back to him if healthy?

Any observation about Kinne from preseason?

Recruited by UT, transferred to Tulsa, ~9500 yards & ~80 TD's in 3 years, but also ~1400 & 15 TDs in 3 years in CUSA. The rushing yards seems notable for this offense.

Weirder things have happened.

We need a QB, a true #1 WR or TE....as pure pass rushing OLB and some secondary.
I don't think it is that drastic. Desean might not be a true #1 but they essentially have 2 low end #1 receivers when Maclin is healthy. And Ertz might not be Gronk or Jimmy Graham but guy is going to be good.

Our receiving corps could have been good enough for a real QB. Not like Seattle or SF throw out better corps. I think the line has actually been pretty underwhelming for having so much hype. I'd probably upgrade that before I upgraded WR.

Defense is obviously still a work in progress so they need more play makers on that side of the ball especially since most of the defense is piecemeal. Unless they can get a top QB somehow, I'd focus on BPA most likely on the defensive side of the ball.

Thoughts on Barkley? Can he be a decent backup down the line? Should his 2014 roster spot be garenteed at/near this pace?
No trade value, a cheap contract, Vick gone next season so we'd have to bring in 2 qbs next year to bump him (and that's if foles stays). Don't see any reason for him to leave and not at least be our 3rd qb.

He wasn't supposed to see the field this year, and his shoulder might not yet be back t0 100%. There's no good reason he shouldn't at least be brought back next summer to compete in camp.

It may be splitting hairs but I see D-Jax and Maclin as 2's at the most. We need a true #1 WR, aside from the up of coffee T.O. had with us we havent had one in a long time. I still have some hope for Ertz but without a true #1 WR he HAS to be Gronk or Graham.

If we miss on a QB in next years draft (assuming thats what they want) than IMO our next big need is a WR. Go get Evans or Watkins

If we miss on a qb next year, our next big need may be coach because you just can't win in this league without some talent at that position.

You can get away with average QB play if you have a weapon(s). We don't and I think that compounds the issue. You need one or the other but you can't do it without both. Cut bait with D-Jax and get anything you can get and get a true #1 WR with a decent head on his shoulders.

Speaking of which, we do need to get some real damn leaders in here as well. Different topic I guess.

Yong talented guys grow into leaders. For all the flak he took, Donovan was a leader. Dawk and Vincent were unquestioned leaders. Then there was the guys that grew into it. Westbrook, Sheldon, lito etc. We need young talent to grow. Earl Thomas would have been fantastic for that.

For one, I don't think any of the WR's in this draft are as can't miss as say a Calvin or Julio were. None of them are seemingly top 10 picks based on talent alone. Beyond that, you seem to insinuate that we should get away from BPA and go after holes. This team has too many holes, now and in the near future, to selectively draft. They can use an upgrade at just about any position and the positions they seem set, like tackle, they are relying on a 31 year old tackle who is getting injure more and more.

Beyond that, I think its silly to think that the #5 guy in yards isn't a #1 receiver. He isn't that prototypical big WR who you can target in the RZ but beyond that, he is a beast. If Desean isn't a #1, then less than half the teams in the league don't have #1's, thus making the idea of a #1 WR void. This is a team whose receiving corps has largely stayed the same and hasn't finished in the bottom half of the league in passing yards since they've come into the league. Only finished outside the top 10 once (2012). Sure, some of it was Andy's offense but their attempts weren't dramatically larger than other teams. In fact, they have a top 10 passing attack without their #2 WR and with 3 different QB's in there. I don't think the receiving game is the problem.

We really have no solid leaders on this team. When these "leaders" open their mouths whats the first thought in your head? When I hear guys like Shady, Desean, Cary Williams talk it just kills me.

Compare them to guys like Dawkins, Vincent, Sheldon Brown, Runyan, Douglas Westbrook, McNabb etc. and you realize how bad we're missing guys with true leadership ability

I'm not saying to not go BPA in place of hole. I'm saying that WR could very well be a BPA and a hole. Depeneding on who comes out Evans or Watkins look to be top 10. If Evans comes out and runs well he could even be top 5 or 3 and every bit as good Julio or AJ Green IMO.

We'll have to agree to disgree when it comes to Jackson I guess. He's given me enough to see that he's not a #1 WR at all. He can't be fed, he cant get you those extra yards, he can't take over a game or a drive like you need a true #1 WR to do. He's a novelty player who is better served being a compliment WR and not one you lean on. Oh, and he's a flat out yssup on the field.

If Desean isn't a #1, then less than half the teams in the league don't have #1's, thus making the idea of a #1 WR void.
Comments like this worry me. Are you going with stats or your eyes here?

When I look at the NFC alone I see only 2 WR situations that we're definitely better off than and that's the Vikings and Rams....maybe SF and Seattle's and I'm ONLY listing them because I havent seen Harvin or Crabtree post-injury yet.

Schefter says the Eagles are close to trading Sopoaga to the Pats. I think we only signed him because we had nobody. Guess Bennie Logan and Cedric Thornton will rotate to play the position if the trade goes through. Odd trade. Soap hasn't really been that good. Gets singled blocked too easily.

EDIT - there it is. Eagles traded Isaac Sopaga and a 6th rounder for a 5th-round pick.

And Thornton has been one of our best defensive lineman

Move Graham, Cole or D-Jax now ;)

I don't think we can do anything with Cole due to his contract. I wouldn't mind trading Graham. Gotta keep DJax. He's literally all we have at WR.

The D-Jax thing was more of tongue in cheek because of my earlier posts

I thought that about Cole but wasnt sure how that would work with us already paying him half his money this year

@RoobCSN: Eagles want to see more of both Bennie Logan and Damion Square. Sopoaga had 18 tackles in 8 games. Non-factor.

@ZBerm: Sopoaga made $3.25 million from Eagles, including $2.75M signing bonus. He played 8 games, had 18 tackles, played 39 % of defensive snaps.

I'm with you, DJ is far from a number 1. He's the default number one on this team because there's no one else. What does he do other than run fast?

Its Too Soon To Judge Chip Kelly

PHILADELPHIA — Halfway through Chip Kelly’s first season as Eagles head coach, he’s doing better than the man he replaced at the same juncture, better than the other coach to take the franchise to a Super Bowl, and just as well as the team’s most popular head coach.

Kelly is 3-5, and the fact that it came after a 3-3 start, and that his last two games have been devoid of offense, makes the former Oregon head coach look bad in the eyes of his critics, who are ready to book him on the next flight back to the Northwest.

So perhaps it is time for a little historical perspective.

Andy Reid took over an Eagles team in 1999 that had won just three times the year before and began his rookie season 0-4. He blew a late lead in the season opener to Arizona and scored a total of five points in losses to Tampa Bay and Buffalo.

That binder filled with notes on how to be a head coach didn’t look so appealing when he stumbled into the halfway point of the season at 2-6, after blowing another lead and losing to the Giants in overtime.

Reid’s West Coast offense hadn’t scored more than 24 points in a game, and that 24 came in the blown opener against Arizona. Five times in his first eight games, the offense, under the direction of quarterback Doug Pederson, was held to just one touchdown.

You could have made a lot of money halfway through that ’99 season if you bet Reid would take the Eagles to the playoffs in each of the next five seasons, culminating with a loss to the Patriots in the Super Bowl in that fifth season.

Let’s go back a little further.

The article goes on to compare Kelly's start with those of Buddy and Vermeil.

Thanks for posting this. Anyone getting there panties in a bunch over Chip not taking to the playoffs this year needs to remember that '99 season. I still have faith that this guy can get the job done but you have to patient.

They're probably the same people that complained bqck then too.

I don't think he has that many TDs, it's 13 TDs pass & rush.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/F/FoleNi00/gamelog//

Still it's very good.

Those intra-NFCE games can be real tough, that's not the first time that's happened, seemingly awesome matchup turns into a low scoring slog.

And he did nothing but improve on these numbers.

@EliotShorrParks: #Eagles defense was great again. Five straight games where they held their opponents to under 21 points.
Not buying this. They gave up well over 500 yards to a bad offensive team.
The game was out of hand early though. I'm not saying they're elite, but 5 straight games of >21 points is a lot better than a lot of us expected.
Agreed! I think we've seen the progress and promise we'd hoped for coming into the season. If they could just figure out how to play as well at home as they do on the road, they could still win the NFCE (not expecting this, but it's still well within the realms of possibility). It's downright amazing how badly they've played at the LINC.

This was the first big step and staking his claim to the starters role and never letting it go. And if he keeps playing this way, why not?

You know everyone here buried Foles a couple of weeks ago by how bad he looked. Missing wide open players badly, multiple times during the game. Then after the game it is reported he had a concussion bad enough to miss a week+ of time.

The question I have is did Foles get his concussion early in the game and led to his terrible throws? Because the rest of the games he has played - he has been pretty accurate. Any Philly locals hear anything about this possible scenario?

No he was knocked out of the game by the concussion hit. However his groin was an issue that week. I still think the moment got to him.

@EliotShorrParks: #Eagles defense was great again. Five straight games where they held their opponents to under 21 points.
Not buying this. They gave up well over 500 yards to a bad offensive team.
As long as they don't give up points how many yards they give up is meaningless.
Well sure, until you get into the whole fact that points and yards are often correlated. Sure, you can give up 500 yards sometimes and only give up 20 points but on the whole, that will normally lead to more points, especially for a team which isn't particularly good with forcing turnovers.

The defense is a work in progress and they need a few more drafts to get the guys they want in the system so apart from seeing individual progress, I'm not sure defense performance matters that much since a decent amount of these guys will be gone in the relatively near future.

What? Which side are you on?Overall, I thought the defense was good. Pryor had like 94 yards rushing, but honestly it felt like they are doing a really good job on the containment.
